It does but it also requires switching into 16bit colour mode... any way to avoid that?

I believe not, unfortunately.  Some modders are working on a project for that and other features but it won't be done for years...

Just right click on the desktop, click property (i think). go to the last tab from right, click on the resolution and make it 16-bit. then u should be able to run the game in windowed mode. it's more detailed when u do that.

No, if you want to hear it expressivly.

But here's a way how to tied it with external program, so everytime when you will be in need to playing wog/sod and click, it will switch to 16bits and take you back after it.
