short story: Jewel from The East

OOC: I wrote a short story... The beginning has a lot of retardation. It was inspired by other players at the bard's Glade. I hope you'll enjoy reading it... I really do. If anything isn't clear... Post? I guess...

IC:The archbishop of the church of Elrath wants no trace left of the previous red church. He started a sort of inquisition. This quest was the chance for every bounty hunter to gain a little gold. All you have to do is get a confession, the person in question and proof that he/she served Alaric. Your father gave you a list, stating that in mercpost you should go look for a Priest, he should help you find a raven. You think this all very stupid, but you obey him since he said something about test of manhood. So you go to Mercpost, a mercenary encampment. There you ask about a pearl, but noone knows anything about her. You don’t show the list to anyone, but start asking after a priest. Someone misheard you and directs you to a big man, wielding a warhammer and dressed in mail. You found out that his (nick)name was Priest. You ask about The Raven and slowly, in his terrible dialect, he tells you about The Raven.

Elya The Raven? Aaaah… Yea, the Pearl… Why you askin’? Just curious you say? Very well, Elya was a mercenary. The best if u’re askin’ me, but she never got along with anyone. Well, except me, crippler and Tha boss that is. We be being good mates, bu’ she been considerin’ otha career options afta fou yea’s or so. We we’en’t blamin’ her. Tha life o’ a merc sux. How many missions we spent? Well, we kinda worked for that insane maniac, whas ‘is name, euh... Oh yeah, Alaric. Good job, fine pay, but it wasn’t wot we wanted. No real adventure... Just extortin’ tha commoner and all. Crippler an’ me were just fine wit dat, bu’ tha boss hated it and I ain’t blamin’ ‘im. Elya was a strange girl. Well, there ain’t many girls bein’ mercs ta begin with. An’ those that are, usually look like tha men, if ya catch me drift. Bu’ her name was Tha Pearl an’ there is noone who coul’ be arguin’ wit that. She was fast, agile and strong. I ain’t kiddin’, one punch woul’ floor ya, right away an’ also might break ur nose. She could fight with dual weapons, rapiers, daggers, crescent blades (OOC: with a crescent blade, I mean the weapon of Maiev in warcraft III (if u dont kno wc3, think a bit of Xena’s Shakram or google Maiev Shadowsong)) and she could beat anyone with those. She also knew poisons, polearms and bows. Yea, she was a master assassin, able ta convince any man, able ta beat any normal man in 1 vs 1 combat. She made us all very proud. She was intelligent, could read an’ write ya know? But she had a bit of a dark past. I actually shouldn’t be tellin’ ya...(you order another beer) But if u insist... She had a mentor (hic) some old geezer, euh, wos is name?... Oww yea, Gadoth Rages or sumtin’ like tha... Yea, she really liked tha old bastard... (hic) a dark warlock or sumthin’... Full with black magic trics, and poison... Probably left tha poor girl ta rot or sumthin’ afta she wasn’t useful ta him... She was crushed... She be going to som dark cults... They put her unda some sort a spell and she suddenly turned up in our li’l merc camp... Yea... Owww, Pearlie... I’m sorry... (starts mumbling incomprehensible words, unfinished thoughts, dark dreams left by the memory of Pearl, no matter how rude and stupid this man seems, you know that he could be a decent man if time needs be and that he could’ve considered her as a daughter, who needed care and protection from invisible monsters, like dark warlocks)

You leave this old, embittered mercenary behind with his nightmares and personal demons. You are more curious than u ever were after Elya The Raven aka Pearlie. After a few nights travelling, you enter the “murky bow” a tavern on a crossroad, looking for ThaBoss and the Crippler that Priest mentioned.

OOC: ok, I see noone's responded... Damn, ok let's continue...

BIC: . After a few nights travelling, you enter the “murky bow” a tavern on a crossroad.

You see a dark figure in a corner. You could only see his eyes (one green and one red) through the smoke from his pipe and the dark rags he wore. You take a seat at his table. He barely looks up and you see a scar across his red eye. You’re sitting at a distance of two feet from him and are still having trouble reading his face. He probably was a dark elf. His dark cloak, boots and hood suggested that stealth suited him fine. He was pretty old, but still pretty sharp and probably very dangerous. You don’t bother ordering a drink ‘cuz you know that he can hold it. You sit there for a while, trying to provoke conversation. He doesn’t bite, so u ask: “Have you ever heard of Elya The Raven?” The man barely responds: “There are many fine wenches I’ve known. What’s so special about yours?” He cleverly dodged the question in his rude fashion. You think and then say: “How’s Pearlie doing?” The man was taken by surprise, now. “How do you know about her?” he asked. “Let’s say that a good, old, less eloquent friend had some stories left in his old mind.” I said, hoping to provoke him. “Well, well, looks like old Priest couldn’t shut his trap ‘bout his little girl, hey. What do I have to do with this? Don’t tell me you’re just curious. Noone would’ve bothered speaking to me, if they were just curious.” You are surprised. You aren’t planning on telling him this and, actually, you are not so sure about your true motives yourself. You look him in the eyes; a dark, cold, empty gaze is fixed on your every move. You feel very uncomfortable and want to leave, but you’re too determined to just give up now. “What importance do my motives have?” You say. “Maybe I enjoy other people’s sentiment. Maybe I don’t want to divulge any information about Pearl. The fact that you know her name means nothing. You could’ve heard that drunk talk, say her name and describe me. I will not tell anything about her, if you are only here for some sick kicks you get out of other people’s misery.” He said plainly.

You reply: “I have been ordered by my father to find ppl who were with him in the army.” The man was a little taken aback by your answer (or at least fakes a surprised look)and says: “Very well, I am Crippler, but you probably figured that out, already. Pearl and me had the same line of work: hurt the big, bad guys and kill the leader. She was an expert. She learned from me how to shoot and a bit of fencing, but she was talented beyond my belief and quickly surpassed me in terms of skill. She could make poison out of practically evrything, she knew fighting, sneaking, tracking. I am wise enough to acknowledge the fact that someone is beter then me, so I will not deny that I sometimes thought of her as a superior. She was beautiful, though. She deserved that name. It was her blessing and our curse. You know... Touching with our eyes and looking with our  hands... I never saw her with a man, you know. I worked 4 years with her and sometimes I thought she wasn’t human. Well, she wasn’t, but you know what I’m saying. It was clear that she was a hybrid. Not a regular one, either. She originated from a dark elf and a sylvan, something unimaginable. (sigh)... Have you ever seen her? Unmatched, I said. No bar wench could compete with her. Then, she went... She just went... Like we never were a part of her... Like we were a resting stop on the way... Like I was nothing...” He leans back, you suspect that there was a bit more to the story then he lets on, but he was too shocked and sober to say anything. You left Crippler behind at that bar and went searching for the only man left: Tha Boss.

You searched the next town for any clues as to where to find Tha Boss. You ask a local militia member, whether he would know anything of a man named Tha Boss. He said you should go to the captain of the guard. You found a man and where most surprised when you saw him. It was Tha Boss himself. He didn’t look like a thug, he was a blond man, average sized, firm handshake, a little broad and he had a certain attitude that would fit a general. You walk up to him, you were a bit nervous. He looks at you and, before you could say anything, he says: “We’ll talk later, c u at the “Howling Hog”.” You nod in response and turn back. Does he know what u wanted to talk ‘bout? Did he meet Priest or Crippler a few days back?

OOC: I'll continue at the risk of running dry

IC:A few hours later, you met him at the “Howling Hog”. He was a charismatic and somewhat intimidating man. You start: “What do you know about Elya?” He looks back at you. With a certain calm, he orders a beer and makes himself comfortabel. He looks at you and begins his story: “Elya was one of the most talented ppl I’ve ever had in my mercenary band. She was one of the more permanent members; the only ppl who stayed in my group longer were Priest and Crippler. That’s all there is to it.” You were taken aback by such a short reply. You suspected that this guy was an honorable man. So u decided to put all the cards on the table: “I’ve talked to Priest and Crippler. I want to know how Crippler and Elya were really connected and I want to know where and why she left.” He wasn’t surprised at the slightest by the least by this response. He really was a man who had everything under control. He leaned back and he said what he probably kept a secret for a very, very long time: “Elya was a half-dark elf. She would never fit in anywhere. Not with humans and not with elves. She would remain a beautiful mystery to any race. She would never have anyone to whom she could talk to. Don’t get me wrong, she was really social, but at a very superficial level. Never a friend to whom she could talk to or trust her life with. It was a sad fate. It caused her to mingle with warlocks and cults, who felt the sadness inside her. Luckily, she was freed from them by a spell that was misspronounced or something. She came with us, then. And there, she met someone who was almost the same, a semi-dark elf. They found someone who where more or less the same, but the problem was that Crippler was already rotten inside. This wasn’t really a problem, since Elya could stand up for herself. And Priest had really taken a liking into the girl. She probably resembled his lost daughter whom he practically never talked about. At least, when he wasn’t drunk. Priest was a little overprotective and Crippler a little threatening. It balances out, but you’re forgetting the fact that she was being threatened by someone she was connected with.”

He waits a bit and orders another round, while you digest the story a bit and, finally, continues: “You probably already know that we worked for Alaric. Well, one day, an inquisitor joined our group. He was a “holier-than-thou” kinda guy. He never drank or looked at women. He always talked about Saint Isabel, eternal damnation and saving our souls etc. But the man loved torturing and killing everything that didn’t share his faith. You can imagine that taking someone in for questioning was impossible for awhile. After a few weeks with us, he started inspecting the men, like he was some holy outfitter. He didn’t complain much, since he understood, how unlikely this may sound, that a uniform has to be practical and not ceremonial. The problem was that he didn’t approve of women in the army. So when he realised that there was a women in one of those uniforms, he preached on for hours at her about her soul, eternal damnation and proper morals. Anyway, Elya was pretty tolerant for a merc and she respected men of the cloth, but when he outright told her to go away, she hit him and hard btw. I’ve seen that inquisitor kill an orc executioner, but one right, unsuspected, hook from Elya knocked him out for a few secs. He kept quiet for awhile, then, but a few weeks later, he came to find out that she wasn’t human or elf either. “A hellhag, demon-hybrid” is what he called her, I think. I assured him that he would be safe from her. In fact, I promised him that I would post guards at his tent to protect him and some guards at her tent as well, so that we would see her ,if she tried to perform heathen rituals. I even kept my word at this madman.”

He orders another beer. You ask a question, since you’re really curious and you know that he really likes to (hear himself) talk and he actually kinda has a soothing voice: “Why wouldn’t you keep your word?” He smiled and said plainly: “It’s never a good idea to respond to paranoia and I had worked with Pearl for about 3 years, then. I knew I could trust her. I kept my word to the blood-thirsty priest ‘cuz I served under Alaric in those days.” Normally you’re quite prejudiced and could’ve thought that a hybrid could never be completely trusted, but you actually found this a satisfying answer. For a while he steered the conversation into a different direction. You two talked about the latest events. He was especially interested about events/stories like about The Unholy One.

It can be difficult to get feedback sometimes.  Watch the view count to figure out how many people are reading.  Usually it they will comment faster if it is bad, so take it as a compliment.

OOC: yay, feedback, now on to the story...

BIC:After he ordered his sixth beer, you steered the conversation back to Elya. Later you wondered, whether he brought back the subject or you did. Like there was no interruption at all, he continued: “So after placing we placed those guards, everything went fine for a while, but the inquisitor wasn’t happy, since noone had caught her performing rituals. So, three days later, he accused her of seducing the men and trying to poison him. I think he called her a “*****************”. The tensions were rising in our camp, since there were some ppl who actually paid heed to that madman. I think that I am a good leader, even when I say so myself...” You completely agree with that last statement btw. “..., but I knew that even I couldn’t stop the tensions from sparking. A few days later,  we had to take a pass close to the border of Academylands. To prevent the warband from being too slow and vulnerable, I ordered that two different parties were set up. I took the first group, which had the most fanatics. The second group was lead by Crippler, our most experienced man. I took the inquisitor with me and put Priest and Elya on the second team. And so we marched through the canyonpass.

We took a slightly longer route. Because of that fact, our group met the other group in a small desert village...” You were a bit confused at this and interrupted him for a sec: “Wait, did each group take a different pass? Why?” The man didn’t like it being interrupted, but he didn’t make too much fuss about it. He took the time for ordering another beer, making you wonder how much liquor he can actually take. He then replies plainly: “Yes, to prevent losing the entire army to an ambush. It was also to prevent Elya being burned at the stake by some fanatics.” You nodded in response to this explanation. He then continues, you felt he almost finished his story: “Nothing went especially wrong during this mission, but, when we found Crippler’s group, Elya was gone... I can only guess what happened, but ever since that regrouping, we never were the same. Crippler drank alot the few months after that and Priest barely spoke. Five months later, the mercenary band fell apart.” You look at him. Tha Boss, the eloquent, charismatic man in front of you looked like he just heard his mother died. He was quiet and you think he drank that many beers because he wanted to feel no pain. You asked him to tell what he thought happened, but he said that was all there is to say.

You left the tavern, confused and not satisfied with this ending. You rode back at the mercenary encampment were you had found Priest. There you started asking specifically about the big guy, named Priest. A nimble figure, named Robert, said that he left with someone shortly after you talked to him. You thanked the man for telling, however, he didn’t know where he went. You rode back towards “the Murky Bow”, planning to talk with that dreadful character. When you entered “the Murky Bow”, nobody’s there. The place was heavily vandalised, windows were smashed, tables broken , stools scattered, broken bottles evrywhere and so on. You wondered what to do know. You looked around and you noticed heavy footprints, probably made by armored horses or plough horses, leading towards the forest. You get a bit suspicious. You consider the fact that the inn was just fine when you passed it the other day, so all this must’ve happened recently. You shout and your horse charges forth.

Interesting tactic using the 2nd person 'you' in a story.  It isn't done often.  Pretty good story so far.  Keep it up.

In the woods you find a gruesome sight. The two men fought all the way into the forest, wounding eachother, embittering words, filled with hate cast at eachother. Priest had stepped into a wolftrap. Judging from the way Crippler walks, you think his shoulder was dislocated. Priest wielded a bloodstained warhammer, while Crippler had two shattered rapiers in his hands. Priest charged in at Crippler, striking at his left side. You could hear Crippler’s ribs shatter. Crippler fell to the ground and Priest stood there, leaning on his enormous warhammer. Crippler looked up, desperately. “Why?” he said. “Ya hurt Pearl, you sick ****!!!” shouted Priest. Crippler grabbed Priest by the leg and kicks himself away from him. He drew a small crossbow and shot Priest in his chest. Priest fell to his knees. “She could’ve prevented it!” said Crippler. “How? By just lettin’ you have yer way with evrythin’?!” yelled Priest. You could almost see something break inside Crippler.

You felt like a voyeur, but you couldn’t move away from this or interfere.

Crippler also fell on his knees. You could see the excruciating pain in his green eye. “She teased me, EVERY DAY!!! The way she would dress, talk or wink at me. And nothing, nothing was sincere. The night before we went in that god-forsaken pass, I tried to tell her how I felt, AGAIN, but she wouldn’t even listen to me, AGAIN! So after we fended off those desert raiders, I singled her out in our camp, you can be surprised about the exclusiveness in a desert. We talked again, we ate...” an evil grin spread across his face. “You poisoned her!!!”, Priest yelled, “How dare you? Have you no dignity, you rottin’ dastard!” “No... Just something to keep her quiet... To keep her calm... So I could...” Crippler muttered. You understood it now... You felt the fate of Elya The Raven, a horrible fate. She was betrayed and abused by the only person she could relate to. Priest became a horrific monster, then. His veins and muscles swoll up and he grabbed his hammer. Miraculously he got back up. Crippler grabbed another mini-crossbow and aims, but Priest batted it in the other direction, triggering it, but leaving Priest unharmed. Crippler was truly afraid now, he had a face like that of a teenage boy caught by the dad of his girl, but this dad had a hammer, the size of a four year-old. Priest hit Crippler, again, and again, and again. The crushed and tormented body of Crippler hissed and howled and screamed with such terror and pain... You can still hear it... It could pierce bone. The malevolent monster inside Priest was gone when Crippler was nothing but a bloody pile of flesh and shards of armor and bone.Priest fell on his side and was breathing heavily. You were completely paralyzed by the sight of Crippler’s beating.

Out of nowhere a woman appeared, she had purplish white skin. She walked gracefully towards Priest. She stroked her right hand across Priest’s face and shushed him, making Priest calm, so very calm; his chest ceased to move and you fell on your knees, feeling remorse and hate over the fate of ppl unknown. You felt a hand rest on your shoulder. You were going to look back, but you suddenly felt weak and was about to faint. While falling down, you notice your hand clenched at the small piece of wood stuck out of your chest... Darkness fell over you... the only thought in your head... Pearl?
