I play with fortress, but I still think they're hard, pretty much half of my early game success relies on getting rune of charge

The problem it that it's awkward to use runes early because you don't have resources to spend.

True, however, if my choice vs some ranged creeps like AAs is to lose 25 or 4 Blackbear Riders because I can get to them before they can shoot I'll gladly spend that unit of wood on it.

but if you get pendant of mastery you gain ultimate runelore, then you dont need wood and ore for runes .if you are lucky enough to get this in early game (in maps like dragon pass) you can be instant winner

Trade gold to resources before the final fight. Dwarfs are a cheap faction.

Fortress is not weak faction. None says so, only that they have expensive buildings and challening creeping at start.
I havent played much by fortress but doesnt they have easy accees to destructive magic?

I prefer light magic. Imho light magic is better for fortress.

Same here. Helmar + light for fortress.
Also by no means they are weak. And when you get regeneration, creeping becomes much easier.

Helmar aside, I personally prefer destructive. There are too many light spells that are not all that good for the dwarves (divine strength, deflect missile except if against sylvan, teleport can be substituted for by rune of charge) or just too specific to get much general use out of (magic immunity, again deflect missile, word of light, regeneration (I do not see any use for this spell besides casting it on magmas... I'd much rather blast an enemy stack with an eldritch arrow than to cast this to get back a single blackbear rider a turn or something during creeping, tent perk is generally much better)). Some important light spells (endurance and haste) can be gotten through perks. Also, light can be pretty much substituted for by runes. Destructive doesn't waste the good SP potential of the runemages as much, has a much more general use and can't be substituted for by runes.

When using Svea I will definitely go for destructive. It helps a lot in creeping as well.

Regeneration wont work with magmas. I prefer to use it on thanes. Also if destructive, I'd go with Erling for the Sorcery.
From light you get resurrection (quite useful with rune of ressur.), divine vengeance, regeneration (for creeping only at least for me).

If I'd go for destructive, I'd pick summoning as well to get Absolute protection.

I pick dest if my hero is Svea.

Getting endurance and haste through perk will centaintly sacrifice defensive formation, preparation and retribution.

I never pick war machine with fortress, its useless except the cart.

Atk, def, luck, light magic, and finally leadership is my favourite for fortress.

The combination of runic atunement, empathy, soldier luck and retribution is very devastating, add light magic, and you'll have one of the most powerful amry, not only that, defensive formation, offensive formation and preparation is also a nice addition.

Light magic is not useless for fortess, especially mass spells like righteus might, haste, endurance, etc, adding some more initiative, atk power and defensive capabilities to already a powerful army with the combination of perk above is awesome. As a last addition, Light magic also has more offensive power than destructive for fortess, divine vengeance.

Yeah seriously, mass endurance and mass deflect missile on those fortress tanks make them really tough to take down.

Yeah, and its synergy with preparation, defensive formation, offensive formation, soldier luck, runic atunement, and empathy is so powerful.

Destructive can't achieve the same result, especially in late game. That's why destructive is useless for fortress.

How about in smaller maps? When enemy comes to you in 3 weeks?

Actually it's good in lategame too. For one flamelords and patriarchs can apply mark of fire to ensure double armageddon damage. Then there's ignite and the armour breaking effect, no it can work pretty well. Alci had shown me a save where he defeated an insane haven army with this.
