Roleplaying tips

Been roleplaying in forums for a bit and have some tips for people?  Well here is a good place to start.

1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person.

1st person.  I, myself..mostly present tense and doing the actions as if they were your own.  Example.  I swing out onto the ledge and kick Baron von badguy in the face.

2nd person.  You and variations...can be either present or past tense.  As if describing the actions of an unknown person.  You startled the intruder as they were coming up the stairs.

3rd person.  Talking about your character by name, and as if the actions were of that character (the most common).  Mitsu kicked Misty in the face for being so much of a pain.  ((Also he, she, and variations)

Feel free to post advice to new roleplayers here, as constructive advice please.  .  This is a suppliment to an already wonderful guide.  Unfortunately I can't find it to post a link here.

Actually "He" and "She" are 3rd person.

"You" and variations are 2nd person.

I would consider second-person point of view to be as if the reader is the one taking actions, not an unknown person. It's extremely rare to see in normal writing. Usually you only see Choose Your Own Adventure books and the like using second-person. First person (which is when main character narrates the story as he experienced it) is a bit more common, and third-person (where it's as though someone is telling you a story about someone else, or even you're just watching a story happen) makes up like 99% of fiction.

I'm not really sure what you mean by them being or not being used in conjunction. As far as I know, the least likely to be used in conjunction are 1st and 2nd. You rarely see someone speaking for themselves ("I", "me") and addressing the reader ("you") in fiction unless it's in dialogue. However, 3rd person is constantly used in conjunction with the others - it is used with the 1st person in your first example, "I (1st person) swing out onto the ledge and kick Baron von badguy (3rd person) in the face." You can only have one single person referred to as "I" and one other person as "you" (and it's really unlikely to have both in a story - in fact, I've never read a book that does), so if you have more than one or two characters (which is fairly likely) then chances are you are using the third-person to refer to them.

If you're talking strictly about point of view, that is, first-person, second-person and third-person with reference only to the main character, then I don't think any of them are ever used in conjunction; you aren't really supposed to change the perspective in the middle of the story. I don't think I've even heard of a book or story that does that.

Korejora, yeah the example was when I was confused with the tense. Corrected as much as I could.  See this is helpful to me, for grammer is a very weak point for me, and I am learning a lot.

Tip 2, if you try to make a tip, and mess up...maybe you should not be making tips .  *grumbles about grammer*.

Ok some more tips..

All Powerful (or close to it) Player Characters.  Now I am bad about having some of my NPC's (Non-Player Characters) pretty powerful. If the character you are playing can't be beaten, hurt, or whatever..I just don't understand why play it at all.  If there is nothing that threatens him/her/it then playing is boring.  Time to retire that one and move on.

Rediculously powered NPC's.  If you have them, try to limit how much they interfear in the game.  PC's don't want to be saved constantly by them, and have to rely on them all the time.  If you have to move on, and the PC's just can't figure it out, once in awhile it is ok.  Also, they can be great mentors and trainers, but remember to have them as a secondary role.  ((This is to you Mytical, stop having your NPC's butt in so much!))

Bar Brawls, Street brawls, muggings, etc.  Please, please, please stop using these.  Please?  Seems every character gets in a bar or street brawl, or gets mugged.  Then they trash everybody in the place/whoever is mugging them.  It's been done way too many times, and is kinda boring.  It is a given that your character is a tough guy..we get it.

Parents killed by...orphaned by...etc.  Yep, done to death.  Hard life..got it. ((Kiki, table 3 is ready for you..yep her clan was killed by...)).

One upmanship.  In addition to normal powergaming there comes a time when two players actually start focusing on each other and trying specifically to outdo the other.  Above and beyond typical powergaming (which is bad enough).  John's character puts out a roaring fire with his bare hands, then Bob's character has to put out a volcano's fire with his bare hands.  Then John has to fight a firebreathing dragon with a toothpick, and Bob has to fight 2 with a splinter.

Then they fight and it really gets rediculous.

Well, I think this in addition to Mytical's powergaming advice, but don't instant-kill someone in one post. It sucks and isn't fair. If a PC dies, it should be done by two rp'ers who have some degree of experience and agreement or if an rp'er wants to quit the rpg. In that case it's allowed.

For example: Dagoth leaves and sits near a tree. The tree grows large and devours him... (I admit that this way kinda sucks, but it's alright... And make sure that you don't have unfinished business with another rp'er)

But this isn't allowed for example: Dagoth walks out. He sees Mitsu. He never liked Mitsu too much and incinerates her... (this is similar to Mytical's post, but let this also serve as an example to people who think their character is balanced, but the other PC is weak or to people who have the "assassin" character)

It's just as bad, and sometimes worse, to roleplay someone else's character without discussion and agreement on the terms of the interatction/conversation and actions etc, even if you don't kill the RPer.

I mean, if you just write

"Being the greatest swordsman in the world, TitaniumAlloy dodges Willam and cuts his head off. William is dead with no chance of return."

Chances are, people will just ignore the post and carry on.

But if you write

"I'm really sorry," said TitaniumAlloy
"I don't care cuz I'm dum n u suk!! I am d worst and I am a terrorist" says William

Then it may make that person's character look like a tool, or just may be highly out of character for what that roleplayer intended and as such will be very annoying for them.
This is also very hard to fix because often it will take time for the HCM interaction, and then the person can't be bothered changing it and the RP goes on, but now William is a terrorist

Small suggestion: consider this and take a character that is very to merge with. Don't take some character you barely understand 'cuz we definately won't. Don't take a character that is good and then suddenly turns evil and the suddenly turns good, unless some plot is interwoven with this. Don't change your personality 'cuz it's easier then.

Example: in reign of Chaos, I play a paladin called Kaļ. he seeks to kill evil forever. In a certain part he's surrounded by reanimated corpses which are used by his dark elf allies. I can't just say: "YAY, more men, keep it up. We will be able to defeat the necromancers in no time, when we raise some more corpses..." That would be completely out of character...

Also, if a fellow rp'er says something to show his hidden intent. Don't take this as a given fact for ur own PC... This may sound confusing, but I'll give an example: in "Gods", I play a seer. Baklava plays as the evil god. He says that he let's his armies attack under the cover of another god's banner to cause confusion. I wrote immediately that I knew it was the evil god, ruining baklava's oncoming plot. Other players also started writing that they knew it... And, to be honest, we're losing the plot in "gods"...

and the best advice (from me): have fun.

Btw, don't try to "beat" other players. just try to make a good story.

other question: You mean dark pasts in general are bad? Let's say they have a certain originality: My parents were beaten to death by their own life bar... My brother was banned from the server... Does that still count as noobish?

It is kinda noobish if you end up dead.

Here's an example of a unique character history for you.

Name:  Mordock, Lord of Unholy Fury.
Class:  Fighter.
Race:  Human.
Mental Status:  Mentally unstable sociopath who's convinced chickens are trying to kill him.
Alignment: Chaotic neutral.
Stats:  Doesn't really matter from what I've read, so just brutish.
Deity:  Thinks he is a god.
Weapon of choice:  Cleaver.

Bio:  The offspring of an accountant and a fish monger, Mordock has had a difficult life.  When he wasn't learning about fish, he was learning about the proper methods of handling money.  Unfortunately, the sheer dullness of accounting caused him to go insane at the age of 8.  Believing himself to be the "Lord of Unholy Fury", Mordock quickly found himself thrown into an asluym after burning down a chicken coop.  His claims that the chickens were out to kill him were ignored by the authorities, and he was unceremoniously locked away.

His tenure in the aslyum did little for his sanity, pushing him closer to the brink.  In his late teens, he managed to esacpe the facility and found work as a mercenary. Within a year, he was respected as one of the most dedicated mercenaries out there.  He was also feared as one of the most sadistic, often employing excessive force in just about every job he secured.  One specific job called for him to collect money a family owed.  Being the Lord of Unholy Fury, Mordock deemed such a request absurd.  He decided to set loose a pack of wild dogs on the family, merrily watching as the beasts ripped them to shreads.  Any survivors of the attack were hunted down by a gleeful Mordock and hacked to little pieces with his cleaver.  Aftewards, he burned their home to the ground and piled their bones up in a grotesque, yet humorous, totem.  After his employer learned of the lengths Mordock took to complete the simple task, he was promplty fired.

Unemployed and with several hungry dog mouths to feed, Mordock sought new employment.  With his most loyal dog in tow, Bitey, Mordock set out to find his fortune and smite those who defy the Lord of Fury.

I usually just pity his creativity but I think that's pretty close to envy anyway.

One generally good tip to keep in mind that the others don't know what you are thinking. Take nothing as self-evident and write your character's feelings down.

@Omega:

That's Dragon Ball Z syndrome...

Just because the power levels of the strongest fighters in that series were almost too high to measure by the end of the Buu Saga (read tens of trillions or some other ridiculous number like that; Akira literally stopped mentioning power levels by Cell Saga, IIRC.), doesn't mean that they were too strong...

Oh, wait...nevermind.

Seriously though, I agree with all of these tips and would like to add the one that most comes to mind, since I'm GM'ing an RPG now myself:

- Be organized!

I tend to be somewhat disorganized and it can be a nightmare when you have to tally up inventory and other such items like that.

Heck, here's two more (along the vein of what's been written, but here goes anyways):

- Give your players a fighting chance, but don't make the fights TOO easy either.

When you're GM'ing, sometimes you get the temptation to send out some nasty critter that's nigh invulnerable. If you do so, there should be some way to defeat it. You should make your players think in their battles though. If there's no challenge, then it also becomes boring. Balance is key!

- Breaking posting rules.

If you're playing in an RPG where you're only supposed to control your actions, then controlling other NPC's (or worse, other PC's! ) is a big no-no. Personally, I'm somewhat tolerant of that, but the net effect is that you end up writing the GM into a corner, then he/she has to figure out how to fix the resultant mess (or force you to edit, which is the easiest solution. )

That's all I can think of, for now. I'll be back here later if I think some more things up.

Dark pasts are not bad.  Child number 2000002 whos parents were torn apart by orcs are bad (imo).  While it is near impossible to have an original origin it is possible to make it a bit more interesting.  Even origins that are done to death if changed a little can be more interesting.

For instance.  Say you want to use the Orcs attacking your parents.  Instead of them all dying while you watch helpless, have them saved by the royal guard.  While not original, it is a bit more interesting then the first.  Or for a real twist, have them saved by the thieves guild
