Using Kaspar you can achieve a lot early on, I tend to recruit an additional hero on ay one for extra blockers, mostly zombies as they can be used and even lost in the first 2-3 days, who cares about zombies anyway? Using them as shields for your skeleton archers while your tent heals any casaulties, you'll get the necessary wood and ore mines + additional loose resources lying around close to your town. Meanwhile, get ghosts and ammo cart and you can start creeping for real, using ghosts as shields instead.

I've played Necro a lot lately and I tend not to go for the win in the game but to let the game grow to become as strong as possible and fight large battles. Maybe it's just me but I find it quite funny. I never have any problems with Necro in late game on Heroic even though AI has several towns and I only have one. You'll creep and build your hero/town quickly, meaning you'll keep up or even be ahead of the AI early on even on Heroic, which means good odds.

The main tactics I use in order to gain the upper hand is to let AI grow strong enough to attack my town. Simply take his catapult out and let frenzy/puppet do the dirty work. Choose wisely what to control, if there are many fliers present you may want to prevent too many of them passing the wall. Also, you got the advantage of seeing in what order creatures will attack, so you can plan on how to avoid your Frenzy getting cleansed by either the enemy hero or paladins as an example. When the battle is coming to an end and their ranged units are either dead or massively decreased in numbers, start ressurecting any casaulties. May as well add that it's a good idea to get those Shackles or AI will just escape when he knows he's beat and you won't have time to resurrect. A few of these battles and you'll be way ahead of AI in levels and you can go utside and fight as well. Never lost with Necro against AI, always ended up dominating the game even though heavily outnumbered.

Of course, against a human player it's different.

One question about Frenzy though. Once cast, does the affected creature attack with my attack skill, my enemys' attack skill or the natural attack skill of the creature?

i bet my head on that it keeps all the stats of the hero that controlled it until then (if we consider it not controlled while frenzied).

it is not like puppet, that actually the creature changes sides. think of frenzy like the creature is just very angry that hits whoever near it. nothing more

That's not what I said though. It's the most effective way of withstanding attacks from equally or higher leveled heroes with an army three or more times bigger than your own and suffer minimal losses on Heroic difficulty. Note that I'm talking about large maps too, on smaller maps with fewer towns this is not needed.

@Vangelis21, thanks for the answer.

Hi there!
It's been a while, since I was last here.
I have a question, has anything changed since the past year or is necropolis still a weak facion? I havent seen a patch or anything, and this tread is almost undead
Is it still viatal to take swift mnid, and wreck your enlightment bonuses and possibly sorc skill?
Cheers

Necro weak..? Since when? Then again no sorcery does make a weak necro, it is needed more often than not. Swift mind is no necessity and neither are the enlightenment bonuses, intelligence and arcane intuition(if you want to spy on enemy hero spells/skills) have priority.

Well i always play Necro, and often get beat up by friends, but than again we aren't pro's and take about 10 weekes before we fight, and often play 1v1v1v1 or sth
This forum gave me the advanage of a lot of nice and usefull tactics and tips how to play this faction, but the sheer power of some factions is just to much imho. Thank you Elvin, now i will know how that swift mind isint a priority, and that its better to have sorc.
Cheers

help against my brother

I am in a multiplayer hotseat game with my brother.  I am necromancer, and he is barbarian.  He is better than me, plays so much more.  We are paused at the end of week 2 currently.  I have 2 heroes (Lucretia and Raven, both lvl 6).  I've kind of mucked up my selections, because I wasn't sure what to pick.  Lucretia is my main, and she is maxed with sorcery, and probably mana regen, arcane training, magic insight.  She has to have one more and I'm guessing its basic dark magic.  I don't remember what I picked for Raven.

Since we paused, I've tested once on my own, necro vs barbarian, and I slaughtered myself in week 7--my necro was not ready for the fight, but the barbarian saw my necromancer couldn't get away and pounced.  Now I've read up on necromancers, and have a strategy for skills (sorcery, enlightenment, dark magic, attack, and luck), but it's not likely to help me in this game, because I feel I'm behind the curve.  I imagine my brother has out-creeped me, it's the end of week 2 and I still haven't built my skeletons building.  I know, so I'm a newb.  Doh!

It's a 2 player small map--I don't remember which one.  I'm not familiar with the maps.

This is my idea for my current situation, and am looking for opinions/advice.  I'll focus on enlightenment and logistics as soon as possible, develop a boneyard, and level/creep as fast as I can going forward.  I hope to get the mentor skill.  Then I'll try to use logistics to get around/behind him and get his castle lightly defended on day 7, hire a barbarian for the new week, use mentor to train them up quick, hire all the barbarian units, and leave them to defend.  In my test game I had so much more gold as necromancer, and my barbarian was always hurting for gold.  Sounds like a long shot to me, but at this point I feel I need to do something creative because I'm behind.  If he goes for my castle, I can still accumulate units through necromancy, but if I can starve him, and whittle him down, he has to take back and stay close to his castle to get units.  This assumes I can keep my main away from a confrontation till the opportune moment.

Thanks for any advice.  Next time I'll build skellies quick.

I forgot to mention, my brother does not play much multiplayer--most of his experience is in campaigns and against the computer.

Ditch Attack in favor of Defense, you need to stay alive as long as possible and Defense gives you a better bonus - necro units don't benefit from morale so you attack less than you get hit. Luck might be nice with Soldier's Luck (skellie warrior bash/vampire torpor) but it's not a priority. If it's a small map then you also don't need Logistics - I'd go for Defense, Sorcery, Dark, Enlight and maybe Summoning. Stack up knowlegde artifacts and enter the fight with high mana. Barbarians are vulnerable to Dark (Puppet or Frenzy his Chieftains, Earth Daughters or Cyclops if he has them) so try to make his units kill themselves as much as possible while you sit back on your side of the field raising your fallen troops. Just remember not to overuse Frenzy on one unit because it doubles Rage gain for the frenzied unit. Mass slow/suffering/endurance (from the Defense skilltree) are usually a good way to start the battle and you can cast them faster too. If you run out of mana try to anticipate which of your units will get a major hit soon and use mark of the necromancer on it. The rest depends on the Barbarian's build. Shatter Dark is unlikely and if he considers you a noob then he might not bring even magic resistances. Use yer magic wisely

Thank you for the excellent advice.  I'll run with it.  I'm starting to think maybe I can have a chance in this game after all, and recover from mistakes made in the first 2 weeks.  Hopefully we can finish our game within the next couple weeks and I can post back here the results.

Can someone post me a replay with a necro battle vs (any faction) because I kind of get in trouble in battles... i mean, today a had a game on a large map vs stronghold, our army numbers pretty much the same , he had 2 lvl above me , but i had lots of nice artifacts (staff of netherworld and cloak of death shadow) .. plus some rings which decrease his morale and luck.. and when battle started i felt kind of useless.. he beat me by using a spell (dont know the name) which deals dmg depending on the numbers of his units.. i barely did some casualties there and i was very dissapointed can someone tell me some tips or better post a replay thx !!

This is confusing, how did you manage to get there so quick. You are crazy and I can't understand your madness I read your advices from here: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=17792&pagenumber=11

and tried very hard and many times. But in week 2 this is quit impossible for me. Pack of Thanes guarding pyramids are pretty devastating, then many casualties because of vault of the mages. And we have still pack of shadow/red dragons in a way to garrison, which I'm not able to pass trough (not in week 2).

And when I see a pic above .. oh man .. The garrison never had a chance!?

I AVE YOU!

PS. If anyone be so kind, please upload this replay and a save named RRDay9Naadir.sav from thread: Heroes 5 Strategy: Playing Necropolis Faction

edit:
I'm using Quantomas's latest beta mod. Hard without artifact guards.

It is not something you can always do and a crucial part of the strategy is having firetrap, intelligence, logictics and getting fire warriors in time to deal with the harder stacks like thanes. You will no doubt have losses but that's what raise dead and mark of the necromancer are for, also on this map getting that necro perk that raises back minor casualties after battle. Often it saves me one raise dead and I need all the mana I can save.

Either way all those hard fights you get by with your spells and defensive tactics, not your units' offensive. A dragon landing on 4 mines dealing about 200 dmg each can be pretty painful If you are lucky to get phoenix in the pyramid things get a lot easier though you'll need to consider all the mana the familiars will drain in the garrison. If you have dark and puppet them first with swift mind, they will steal your mana and give it to you If they drain you dry then use mark of the necromancer on a weak stack that will charge you fast and get your mana back by shooting it. After you summon fire warriors or a phoenix things will get less tense, just beware of those pitlords and their vorpal blade if you depend on a phoenix.

EDIT:

I wouldn't worry about not being able to do it, I already had some multiplayer experience at the time and knew a number of neutral exploits. There are some ways of getting around certain units, even arcanes. On that map you can defeat lots of them on day 4 without a single casualty if you play really really well. Just with raise dead, motn, a stack of archers and one skeleton warrior. In my case I had to wait for motn to give me enough mana to cast raise dead twice or so. Or horned grunts, if you move a zombie to the front they will leap on it and you can shoot at full range then.

Wow, I did it! In a day 5 of second week. Would be three days earlier if I wouldn't move from castle my second hero with reinforcement so late
Thank you for a detail answer with great tips. As always your posts are top notch

Firetraps and fire elemental save my day I'd a litle bit luck with tier 6 and 7 neutrals, Whrights and Devils. Former were a peace of cake with firetraps, archers and 5 skeleton warriors(1 for stack), latter with help of fire elementals too.

BTW in the garrison I lost only ghost, 3 warriors and liches I can't believe it

Thanks to you I can enjoy necro faction even more. One more time thanks for advices from all your post I found. All were (are) very useful.

Regards

Thumbs up! You now have a good idea how necro rushing works, these guys can pick up momentum at a crazy pace.

Btw I prefer to keep just 1 skeleton warrior and have more zombie stacks instead. I find it easier to tank with zombies and I don't fear losing them.
