The Emperor Protects

Chapter One:  Nine Ways to Die

"How many does that make?  Three?  Four?"
"Five, my Lord."
"Five?  Yes, that sounds about right" mutters a weary looking man peering out from a heavily cluttered desk.  Piles of dataslates, scrolls, and other knicknacks obscure everything but his head.  "Five times you've cheated death now.  If I didn't know better, I'd say the God Emperor himself has blessed your life... or you've been damned by the Warp."
"Hopefully it's the former and not the later, my Lord."
"Me too," replies Lord Cortez, the talking head "I would hate to execute you after all you've gone through."  A total lack of sincerety lingers on the last of his words.
"I would hope so" replies the young man sitting across from the tired Inquisitor Lord.  Simply dressed in long, black jacket devoid of virtually any decoration save for a small rosette above the left breast, the guest sits attentively for his lord to continue.  A large ebony hat sits respectfully in his lap.
"Are you sure you are up for this, Atticus?" the Inquisitor Lord asks as he carefully pulls a dataslate from the pile.  He fumbles with a few buttons until the screen glows a dim green.  A furrowed raises as Lord Cortez reviews the file for the fourth time.  "It hasn't even been two weeks.  You should get some more rest."
"The enemies of mankind do not rest, sir" replies Atticus.  "The longer I take to give chase, the faster my chance of ever finding them again disappears.  I must leave immediately."
"Fair enough."
The elderly Inquistor reclines in his chair, joining his hands to his nose, contemplating the best course of action.  Just then, a faint knock is thud echoes from the wooden doors at the front of the room.  A small servo-skull hovers into the room, past Atticus, and stops gently above the messy desk.
"Your Lordship's presence is resquested for trial" the skull's voxcaster state monotonely.  "Session begins in ten minutes."
"Thank you.  I shall be there shortly" replies Lord Cortez as he fumbles around for a cane lying quietly beneath his chair.  After some struggling, he pulls his aged body out of the chair and hobbles to the door.  Atticus grabs his hat and stands up as his lord walks by.
"I think I might consider getting some new augmentics.  My knees certainly aren't what they used to be a century ago."  He stops to face the young Inqusitor.  "Against my better judgmnet, I shall allow you your hunt.  Try not to lose another life this time.  I trust you have a team assembled."
"Yes, Lord.  They are waiting outside.  I was just about to meet them."
"You haven't even met them yet?"
"I've met a few of them before.  One is a freshly promoted interrogator and the other has was part of my old master's retinue.  The others I summoned to meet me here.  They were a little hesitant to take a mission they nothing about, but when the Emperor calls, you answer."
Lord Cortez chuckles as he pulls on an old brass handle and motions Atticus through.  "Indeed you do."

"Walter!  It's good to see you" Atticus says as he places a hand on the shoulder of the decrepit old man to his right.  Dozens of wrinkles scrunch his face as he smiles at the young inquisitor.  He extends his hand and is rewarded with a firm shake.  "It hasn't been that long.  Only a couple of weeks."

"I know, I know." Atticus grins as the two men begin to walk along the path of a massive chamber filled with candle light.  Explicators, notaries, and members of the Ministorium pace about the room conducting business and exchanging stories.  Servo-skulls and familiars fly around the upper streches in every direction.  The commotion in the room is amplified further by ebony floors and walls.  Yet despite all the activity, the building maintains an aura of dread.  Along with the holy Inquisition, dark secrets and damned souls also called this place home.

"I'm still not sure, that is to say" Walter begins, carefully hedging the issue "how did you surive?"
"Luck I suppose" Atticus replies as he shoos away a pesky cherub familiar chanting obnoxiously in his ear.  "Do you have the list?" he asks quickly changing the subject of his miraculous survival.  Walter produces a dataslate and begins flickering with its dials.
"How many?"
"Seven altogher" Walter replies with a sigh.  "There were a few setbacks."
"What do you mean?"
"There was an unfortunate incident with the sanctioned psyker earlier this morning.  It took the custodial staff about an hour to clean the mess up."
Atticus grimaces.
"The rogue trader we hired was arrested earlier last week and convicted on eighty-seven different counts.  He was executed the same day.  Apparently his defense that he was an Inquisitorial agent was not enough to commune the sentences."
"Lovely"
"As to the mercenary, he learned that it isn't a good idea to get in a bar fight with an oygren.  They say h-"
"So what are we left with, Walter?" the Inquisitor impatiently snaps.
"It's not all bad news.  No need to get snippy.  Von is still with us; he managed to survive the ordeal as well.  Two ex-guardsmen responded to our request and the Ecclesiarchy was gracious enough to provide us with one of their crusaders.  Lastly, a freskly promoted interrogator has been assigned to us."  Walter finishes as the two reach a door off to the left of the main chamber.  "They are waiting in here."
"Very good.  Let's meet the new team, shall we?"

As the two men enter, four pairs of curious eyes turn to greet them.  A fifth pair sits quietly and smiles as he notices the inqusitior and the savant.  Atticus quickly makes his way towards the end of the table at the center of the room.  Before speaking he takes a few moments to inspect the figures in front of him.  The two former guardsmen look exactly as expected, wearing drab bodygolves and armed with instruments of death.  Von, the medic, was dressed as Atticus always remember, wearing a simple fatigues under a long jacket.  The interrogator is wearing carapace armor, apparently not yet familar with the relaxed dress standards interrogators enjoyed.  Of all of the new members, the crusader stands out the most in grey power armor painted with the colors of the church and pinned with purity seals.  His sheer bulk must have been quite difficult to get into the tiny room.

"Greetings.  I am Inquisitor Atticus Nines of the Ordos Xenos.  This man here" he motions to Walter "is my savant, Walter Pruit.  You have all been summoned because your service is needed to hunt the enemies of mankind.  I'll be upfront with you.  The mission we are going to undertake will be quite dangerous.  We will be hunting a small group of alien pirates responsible for unspeakable crimes against the Imperium.  We are to hunt down this menance and deliver the Emperor's wraith upon them."  Walter pulls out a small device and places it on the center of the table.  After a few taps a holographic projection of a star system springs up.
"This is the Orpheus star system.  The aliens were last encountered here by my former master a month ago.  Unfortunately, the pirates were able to escape after inflicting heavy casualties on my master's retinue.  Only Walter, Von, and I were not killed in the battle.  Even though it has been a month, I believe those aliens are still there and I intend to kill every last one of them."  The image flickers off as Walter turns the emitter off.  "Any questions?"
Walter leans over. "Perhaps a round of introductions before questions, my lord?"
"You are correct, Walter.  I got a little carried away.  I should get to know the people I'll be working with" he motions to his new henchmen to speak.

Ardin the Crusader remained silent for a moment after the Inquisitor spoke. He waits as a sign of respect for any of his new companions who wish to speak first.

Silence filled the room, so Ardin spoke:

"Greetings Inquisitor Atticus", said Ardin with a solemn reverence.

For a Crusader, Ardin was rather carefree and jovial, if rather quiet. Even so, he was respectful and honor bound to a fault, much like most other Crusaders.

After another long silence, Ardin continued:

"My name is Ardin and I pledged myself to your cause upon hearing about it in the Ecclesiarchy. Is there anything else you would like me to mention, Sir?"

It was clear that Ardin was not a chatty fellow. It wasn't because he was antisocial or xenophobic, but rather a not so indirect consequence of his upbringing and training as a Crusader.

((Hope I didn't botch the intro too badly. ))

"Yes.  There may be times where we need to be discrete, so you may want to get something to cover your fine armor.  Power armor tends to attract quite a bit of attention, but I'm sure you know all about that."

Walter pulls up the dataslate, perusing the details of the crusader's endeavors.  "Looks like" he mumbles before coughing "that you've served in quite a few bloody conflicts.  The Khornite attack on Sardunia III?  I read that was one of the bloodiest conflicts with the Ruinous Powers in that sector.  What else?  Ah, it looks like he's also had extensive experience fighting the Orks and Tyranids."  Walter looks increasingly impressed as he reviews the file.

"Most impressive!" Inquisitor Nines says as he approaches the warrior and observes the hundreds of scratches and dents in the power armor.  "Not many people walk away from fighting such abominations in close combat.  I am honored to have such a fine warrior in my service."

"It is an honor to serve.", replies Ardin, with a small gesture of respect.

Ardin then takes a moment to gaze at his new companions before saying, to the Inquisitor:

"I think I should let my companions speak now, Sir."

The ghost of a smile escapes his lips as he eyes a nearby chair. Allowing himself a minor impertinence, he sits down, with a small thud.

Von seemed relaxed and carefree as he watched the two converse.  One mission was the same as another to him.  He wasn't much of a fighter, but his job wasn't fighting.

"Just point out who's hurt when the time has come, and I will do my thing.  Try to keep in mind that I'm not much of a fighter though.  Others tear em down, I patch em up." he grins.

It was not the first time he had worked for inquisitor, then he looks Atticus and says
"I prefer do the talking with weapons rather than mouth. Ill take any alien scum out of the way when needed"

I responded with a smile and shook Atticus' hand. "It's an honor to meet you, sir. The ecclessiarchal is always ready to help the inquisition." I said. It was somehow strange to meet a man in whoms footsteps I might end up one day. "besides, I could use some work in the field" I added, while being a bit clumsy with my equipment.

I did not know what pose to give myself in that clumsy carapace armor. Standard ecclessiarchal equipment, my ***. I did not trust the imperial with the flamer, though. Ow, well, as long as I can continue my work without him shouting threats and killing captives, it won't matter. besides, I have to learn to get rid of my prejudices.

now, what leads would this man have towards the pirates?

"Anyone else, Walter?" Inquisitor Nines asks as the introductions wind down.
"I just received a notice" Walter says as he tilts his head upward, trying to read the text of the dataslate through the bottom of his triocculars.  "Looks like we might have another stealth specialist seeking employment."
"Interesting.  Summon him for me, will you?"  Atticus motions for the others to rise.  "As of right now, you are all agents of the Inquisition.  You answer to the Immortal God Emperor first and me seco-"

Atticus's speech is cut off by the clumsy figure crashing knocking the door open.  A young man with firery red hair, bearing all the hallmarks of an inexperienced notary, pants as he tries to catch his breath.  Walter pries his head from the dataslate while Atticus hostlers a plasma pistol he subconsciously drew on the interrupter.
"Inquisitor... Meeting... Needed" he gasps, holding his knees as he greedily inhales the surrounding air.
"A meeting?  For what?  The only meeting scheduled for today was a hearing."
The man takes a few more seconds to compose himself before blurting out "It's an emergency meeting.  All inquisitors are to respond at once!  Something big is going on!"
"Good Emperor man!  Why didn't you say so!" Atticus motions for the others to follow, marching out of the room into the busy hall.
"But, but" the man is left muttering as Walter smiles and pats him on the shoulder before catching up.

After five minutes of fighting with the crowd advancing on the meeting chambers, the inquisitor's retinue finds themselves on a balcony overlooking a cramped room.  Several other interrogators, drapped in exotic clothes and surrounded by their own personal rogue's galleries, nod to Nines as he joins them.  One of them, a woman wearing a regal-looking gown and holding a powerstaff, steps forward.  Her horned rim glasses are protected by the humming mechaincal bird on her shoulder.
"Six now?"
"Five."
The woman chuckles, aped by the bird.  A few of the other inquisitors stare on.  "You have to be the luckiest fool I've ever met, Atticus."
"Yes, yes" Atticus replies cooly, intent to move on to the issue at hand.  "What's going on, Rose?"
Rose looks hurt yet decides against teasing her coworker, she tilts her head towards the floor.  "Something very bad from what I've gathered.  It's been almost a decade an emergency meeting has been called to order."  Several holographic images argue and bicker amongst themselves on the floor, digital representations of inquisitors millions of miles away.  More people keep trickling into the room before Inquisitor Lord Cortez, sitting in a large chair in the middle of the room, orders the doors closed.

"Quiet!" he shouts, sending the message psychically to reinforce the command.  The gallery complies as the elderly inquisitor stands to his feet.  "This meeting is called to order.  For sake of time, I'm going to cut right to it.  Sarveno 7 is gone."
The room grows deathly quiet as the annoucement settles in.

"What?" asks one of the flickering images on the floor.  "It's gone?"

"Gone" Cortez echos.  "We started to receive dozens of navy reports a few mintues ago verfying the information.  It's just gone.  Somehow, some thing made that planet disappear.  I want to know what it is.  I want to know now!"  He shouts.  Atticus and Rose wince at psychic backlash.  "I don't need to tell you how serious of a problem this is.  It is imparative that we discover the root of this... this... this heresy!"  He paces furiously around, gazing at the occasional retinue and holoimage.  The atmosphere is tense and several of the younger members present silently will themselves to be in happier places.

"NINES! ROSE! G'DHALL!"  The two inquisitors on the balcony snap to attention, followed by a third on the floor.  "GET YOUR TEAMS AND GO INVESTIGATE!  YOU ARE TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY!"  Rose and G'Dhall bow and turn to leave, followed by their teams.

"Time to go," Atticus begins as he walks out the door "Looks like you are in for a bit more than you bargained for.  Grab your gear and meet me in the hanger. We leave for the Sarveno system in an hour."

"For the emperor." I said and followed orders. This was going to be a rougher mission than I had anticipated. Alright, time to follow our leader in the name of the emperor, but first, let's get my gear.

There wasn't a lot of gear come to think of it. All I had to pick up, was my combat knife, hacker tools and my "special" equipment. If they ever manufactured powerspoons, I would buy them...

Well, no time for daydreaming, time to meet up with the rest at the hangar.

Gabriel was on his way to the hangar where he would introduce himself to Inquisitor Atticus Nines of the Ordos Xenos to whom's journey he has been assigned to on the orders of his Lordship Cortez.

The hallways were crowded and sarvants of the Adeptus Mechanicus were frequently passing by him on the way to the hangar to prepare the ships. His massive form, geneticaly engeniered by the Ecclesiarchy and strengthed by his faith in the Emperor and traning, towered above the crowd he was walking through. He wore a pure white coat only marked with the imperial eagle on his breast above his power armour, his trusted sword hanging at his left side and his shield on his back.
He did not yet know where he would go and he didn't need to as his only purpose was to serve the god Emperor and being assigned to an Inquisitor was an honor he wouldn't have hoped for yet.

He continued his way to the hangar silently chanting his prayers and thanking the Emperor for giving him a chance to futher prove his devotion to the Imperium.

"That's what we are going to find out, Von."  Atticus says as he skirts around a crowd of bickering mechanics.  "I've read about such things happening but I can't remember where exactly.  Blast!  Where's Walter when you need him?"

After an half-hour, the medic and inquisitor find the elderly savant conversing with the newly formed retinue in front of an imposing spaceship.  Techpriests hover around the sleek craft, chanting prayers of fortification while burning pungent incense.  “We all set Walter?”

“Yes except for Drex never reported in” he says while rummaging through a dataslate.  He looks up at the lumbering servitor hauling everyone’s luggage into the ship and then returns to the slate.  “Is it really necessary?”

“Yes.  I do not doubt for a moment Lord Cortez would want such information in the hands of a deserter.  This is a very sensitive matter and we have no idea who is behind it.”  He reaches for a small black contraption lodged gently in his ear and taps it.
“This is Inquisitor Atticus Nines.  I am requesting the removal of a deserter named Drex.  All data concerning him can be found in my mission log.”
The other line is quiet until a stern female voice answers. “Request granted.  Subject will be removed.  Is he needed for information?”
“No, make it quick” Atticus says coolly as he climbs up the ramp of the ship, leaving everyone but Von and Walter staring at the sheer ruthlessness of the act.
“A free bit of advice for all of you.  Atticus is driven.  He will stop anyone who stands between him and the mission” he adds cryptically as everyone boards the ship as the techpriests conclude their arcane rituals.

The interior of the ship is surprisingly well-lit and full of all sorts of exotic trophies.  As Walter would later explain, the previous owner of the ship (Atticus’s, Walters, and Von’s boss) had a hobby of collecting mementos of his travels.  After inspection by inquisitorial authority, if deemed to be harmless, he was allowed to keep them.  The group follows Atticus into a large room, a war room, and sit down at Nine’s request.

“I just got some more details.  Inquisitor Rose is being deployed to Sarveno 2 and 5, G’Dhall to 3 and 6, and we are off to Sarveno 1 and 4.  As you know, the primary focus of this investigation is the discovery of the Sarveno 7’s disappearance.  From what I’ve read, the journey will take two weeks of warp travel so I suggest you make yourselves at home.  There are enough rooms for everyone on the ship as well as a training area, medicae facility, library, and other facilities you’d expect to find?”  The ship’s engines begin to wake as Nine’s takes a seat.

The hanger attached to the inquisitorial spire opens up as three black ships streak off into the atmosphere.

Upon boarding the ship, Ardin takes a look around. Upon finding the library, he takes a book off of one of the shelves and starts reading.

All of this is done without interacting with the other crew members. He wasn't the type of person to initiate a conversation, especially when he barely knew the other members of his team.
