HoMaM2 map editor is cooking my CPU alive...

So, my Heroes II CD doesn't work on my laptop anymore, and rather than get a new disc, I decided to just remake my favorite maps in Heroes III instead by having both games' map editors going side-by side. For some reason, H2's editor is just cooking my poor little mobile Athlon, even when running in Safe Mode with no other programs going and priority set to Low. Task Manager reports CPU usage of 95-98% pretty much constantly, and if I leave it going too long, my CPU overheats and the system shuts down (which also kills any progress I've made on the map I'm trying to recreate! I've had to restart three times now). I really doubt this is normal behavior. Is this a common experience, and if so, is there some kind of fix for it?

I'm not experiencing this kind of problem. I've created my latest campaign Rise and Fall of Sandro, just using my laptop. And I have an AMD Sempron. Laptop is almost 4 years old now. And it's nothing fancy by a long shot.
For now, just save every bit of progress you make on your map(s) and when it does want to shut down, you'll be able to save what progress you've made.

When you are in Task Manager, check which process is using most of the CPU. If you aren't doing anything, the "System Idle Process" should be about 97-99%. Take note of anything else using more than a few percent of the CPU.

this is well known problem (with H3 game/editor as well)
there is no solution but to use third party patches
