Diablo III Wizard Class Revealed [October 10, 2008, 1:40 pm ET] - Share - 6 Comments

Diii.Net has word from BlizzCon 2008 that the Wizard has been revealed as one of the player classes in Diablo III, Blizzard's upcoming action/RPG sequel. They have a quote on the unveiling from Blizzard: "During the show, Blizzard Entertainment also unveiled the game’s third playable class: the wizard. A wielder of the elements and a master manipulator of time, the wizard can hurl environment-shattering lightning bolts, channel explosive arcane energies, and create pockets of space outside the normal temporal flow. BlizzCon attendees were able to adventure as either the wizard or the previously unveiled barbarian or witch doctor, battling alone or with up to three other players through the catacombs beneath Tristram Cathedral to a final showdown with the Skeleton King."

Not original but every hack n' slash needs a wizard.

Well, time controlling sounds like fun

I can think of many ways to use that, stop time... slow down time...rewind time

Somehow I don't think it'll be that intricate.  Think about it.  Rewinding time in multiplayer would most certainly be an unpopular event.

Hmm... yeah... but it could cost a lot of mana

Or it could backfire, making you age for a minute or too...

I have a feeling the attacks of a time tree would be:

Increase walk/run speed
Increase attack speed
Decrease enemy movement speed.
Decrease enemy attack speed.
Teleport (stop time and travel to point, but nobody notices)
Rift - Create temporal rift to harm all enemies or something like that.
Stasis
For the ultimate ability, increase caster walk/run + attack speed while decreasing all enemy movement speed + attack speed.

Edit: Some info from diii.net people that are at Blizzcon:

"another interesting skill was a laser beam type I forgetthe name but it fires a beam that can pierce, but the damgae is lowered 20% on each target.

there are a few duplicate spells too. baiscally amazon decoy. wizard has a slow time spell that sounds like slow missile, but it works on enemies too.

she's got a huge variety of spell types. like 60 spells in the game already, and they've not even done the lvl 20 ones yet."

" there are a mixture of attack and passive spells. in all trees. and damage types vary. wizard has masteries that increase casting speed, all types of damage, critical hits in types of damage, provide physical and magial armor. boost weapon damage, etc. huge variety. looks likea LOT of different builds will be possible. melee wizard for sure."

"3 skill trees. arcane, conjuring, storm

4 or 5 skills each tier. tiers at lvl 1, 5, 10, 15, 20.. no lvl 20 skills are in yet. "

"first quest is a skeleton king quest. i didn't get to him before mhy time was up. other skeleton mages and such. i did a rescue the npc warriors type quest. tey look like the ones we've seen in the wwi movie. they tank pretty well.
11:06
Rushster: the tristram starting area is what we saw in that new shot last batch from d3 site. very dark and gloomy and foggy. ghalloween graveyard type views. not many monsters in the opening surface area. first dying npc on the ground is basically the d1 guy again. horrible monster, avenge my death, etc."

Lol, rewinding time and all that? I don't see how that would work in Multiplayer. Like Omega said, it would certainly be an unpopular event in Multiplayer as well. The Wizard class sounds quite interesting though.

Well it would be good for Single player. It would be interesting to see if it is different for Multiplayer than it would be for Single Player. I hope it would be different.

They are taking their time with Diablo 3, it will be released after Starcraft 2 for sure:
Quote:
I don’t ... I don’t know how far out it is, but it’s still fairly early in development. I think when people see it, it feels so polished and so finished, but the reality is we have a very small portion of the game done right now.

A lot of the way we develop is: We wanna make sure the game is really fun and the visual fidelity we want ... we wanna make sure we have a small area that feels really done so we know what to build. So even though it looks really complete a lot of the content is just not there. We have a long ways to go to build each of the different acts in the game and put in all the quests and all the different monsters. We have a lot of development ahead of us before it will be something ... It will definitely be out after StarCraft II.

I'm happy that they are trying to make it more like D1. D2 was fun to play etc. But D1 had epic music, insane atmosphere.. do you remember your first time in the dungeon? That music.. the design.. the darkness (impossible to reproduce that effect in a 3d game, i'm certain :/). And who can forget butcher, I was just a kid when me and my mate tried to kill him for the first time, we nearly pissed our pants opening the door to his chamber

ahh, memories.

D1 is still extremely fun (try "the dark" mod -> very fun, decent balance, great coop, 10x higher difficulty.. and great armory, all those powerful uniques, yum!).

As for D2.. well it was fun, but..  I still think that D2 was a failure. Look how the creatures died.. idk, when I recall dying zombies, scavengers, fallen ones and death knights from Diablo 1, I think it was fun to see, and the sounds were sooooo good and adequate. Seeing the death animation/sound was almost like a reward. In d2, it's just another monster killed.

d2 was more about collecting loot and creating another hammerdin.

And the fields/deserts had no atmosphere at all. The dungeons felt shallow and without even a tiny bit of intimidating d1 atmosphere.

D1 wasn't perfect in all places ofc, cathedral and catacombs were stunning, caves were not so good (too bright ) and hell was just ok. But, the first 8 levels -> masterpiece. AS for hellfire, the nest was ok but didn't fit (a bit too sci-fi for gothic fantasy), and the crypt was an attempt to recreate the cathedral once again, and it was pretty decent

Indeed has the first Diablo owned the second in the field of climate, but it seems to me the the third would still feel more like the II than the I, even if you spend more time underground. Unfortunately.
Anyway, from going through the screenshots they presented on game's site, I conclude each class will be available in both genders, which is indeed a new thing for Diablo.

It's nice but I don't really see that has a huge accomplishment.  Sure I'd rather play as a guy when I'm playing a game--stepping into the role and what not--but I have no problem playing with women.

Hmm... we've got the Witch Doctor to represent the jungle lands, so I thought of what else could work.

Now, I love the manga berserk, and there was a certain character that really appealled to me.

See where I'm going at? What if an assassin (or it could be called something else) class could represent the desert lands?

Personally I think it would be totally awesome... but my knowledge in Diablo lore is kinda... umm... I have no knowledge! So feel free to flame me for my heretical thoughts!

There is an Assasin class (atleast in Dia II) and she is more Jungle themed (atleast it's in Act III where you have that assasin lady from whom the set name originates (Yalas something?)).
There was a desert Act in diablo II aswell but I don't think it had an specific character to it... maybe Amazons?

Yeah well, the class could be from some mystic underground assassination organisation that hunts demons or something... desert demons...

Anyway, I love how Shilat's (the character) armor/mask/everything looks, the style could be varied in many ways... (Which is what it's all about, getting skills and shiny new stuff)

But I'm more of a berserk fanboy than a Diablo one, but a desert inspired assassin class wouldn't conflict with any lore right?

EDIT: Ah... damn...

Diablo Wikia: Also known as the Viz-Jaq'taar or the Order of the Mage Slayers, Assassins are an ancient order originally founded by the Vizjerei Clan to hunt down and eliminate rogue magi within their own ranks.

I want my desert Assassins... I'll go read berserk again...

LOL, that was the same with me as well. I was about 7 or 8 when I first played the game. It was on a demo disc of a PC Gamer magazine or whatever it is called. Versing the butcher for the first time was really scary for me back then mainly because of two things; His voice and the way he just came charging at you.

Oh and Azagal, I would say that Act 3 in Diablo 2 would be more suited towards Assassins or Paladins (mainly Paladins imo).

Hmm yeah the mace you have to create (from the fellows eyes, heart and what brain :S?) was a´ll about those light servants turning bad etc. so Paladins were definetly Act III but I think it's safe to say Assasions aswell it's just that they were more or less thrown in there in Lord of Destruction since they found no better place for them. Never really liked Assasion though... for dmg you could just go for the babarian... eventhough it was priceless to plant 20 corpsexploder mines next to your fellow player in a cow level open a portal and then declare pk xD.

Yeah, Barbarians were pretty strong but I found the Paladins had the much better skills which made me choose them pretty much all the time. I also hate pk'ing, lol.
