Culture? WTF are u talking about?? I'm not looking for a history lesson on gnomes, I want to play a video game lol. People would rather take the fun factor over the "makes sense" factor anyday. If you want to play that game, how could a guy on a horse be level 6, be stronger than a hyrda that has 6 heads...Why is a guy on a raptor weaker than a girl with a whip, and yet they move about the same distance? You can't try to make sense of a fantasy game, that is an outrageous statement. Could dwarfs and elfs live together? I dont know, I dont care! All I know is that I'd rather have a colorful army than some bland group that looks the same and has the abilities all in the name of "accuracy".

TheDeath.... I'm not exactly sure how to respond to you.  We are just on a completely different page here, and play this game for completely different reasons.  I play this game as a social activity with friends.  It's a strategic game that is a lot of fun and, in my opinion, the best TBS game out there.  And that is what the game is always gonna be about.(At least to me)

I am not gonna write a book on how elves or dwarves live.  Theres the farmer, baker, and the candle stick maker, and the Shepard, and milk man.... It all doesn't matter to me.  It's a game.  The game has always been made for its multiplayer (mostly hot-seat) game play since heroes 1.   This race vs. theme has never been an issue until heroes 5.

Sort of like how childish it turned out when Warcraft II ended in the destruction of a world, then going through portals

You don't care about the campaign?

Cause the campaign is nothing without culture, because culture is lore, and without lore no story.

@ Asheera: I'm not sure how to judge your "childish" factor works.  When does something become childish?  Is WoW childish, because I was a giant bull who rode around a town of orcs and trolls on a giant raptor chicken(Ravenlord). Please explain this to me.

Is LOTR childish? Is Greek, Norse, Egyptian mythologies all childish?  Like Triumph said this is fantasy based game.  If having a bit of an imagination is childish I guess then I'm childish.

If you only want to play it then why the heck are we arguing? Let at least the "lore fanatics" be happy by actually having a understandable story/culture, and you can play your game any time If you only want to play for fun, then it doesn't matter what creatures the towns have and how they look. I mean, it's like chess: you don't need fancy creatures, but you can play it (and it seems that's what you want)

No, it is not childish, because you were temporary there and only one. But if you LIVE there with a lot of your giant bulls and actually form a society with the Orcs then it is pretty childish.

But you said it: Orc town. That means it was NOT yours, and thus you were just a traveler

I agree 100%. I want tons with tons of difference, i want towns with many monsters and many different towns.

Exactly, this is a video game, not an arcade game which has no sense.

Ever heard of lore? Pretty amazing thing if you ask me, it is included in any respectable game.. that is with a campaign like Heroes.

Any video game, fantasy, has a story.


what you said is the perfect example of lameness. Maybe you will include Santa Claus too, he is colorful

Yea Ardius, I guess I don't.  I don't play the campaign that much unless I'm bored and theres nothing else to do.  It's kinda a second part of the game I don't care much about.  Stories can be interesting, Lore is important, but not as important as game play.  I buy a game to play it, not to learn.  If I wanted a story I would buy a movie, a show, or a book. I wouldn't buy a computer game.

Let me ask you this if you play WoW, or have ever played, did you play on an RPG server? Just curious if you did.  If you have never player played WoW disregard this.

Maybe I'm just weird but to me Lore is Fun...

Edit: And no, I don't play WoW cause I think it looks silly, I like serious games without things being too colourful, like The Witcher or the Elder scrolls series

Race based town are much more fun to play, because they make sense. Gameplay is only destroyed by random creatures without a story.

Thanks, that makes alot of sense. I'm gonna go play chess now.  While I'm at it, i'm gonna play some halo. Oh wait, I play Halo for fun too so whats the point? there is no difference between chess and halo.  Why would I want nice graphics, colorful and diverse creatures and landscape? Beats me.

My next question is If I just play this for fun and you don't then what do you play it for?   It is a game, is it not?

How bout this.  Why don't the story/culture fanatics go watch some movies and read some books, and give the people that just wanna have fun the games.. sound good?

I'm not disagreeing with you Ardius. Lore is important, WoW has a very deep integrate story line.  It's just that when it comes to games:

Game-play >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Story

For instance, There are a much greater majority of people that play WoW on the non-rpg server vs. the rpg servers.  sorry for using WoW as a reference so much it's just a good example.

Uh, I'm not taking sides here, just trying to point out that having a group of random creatures together in a town does not mean that they cannot have a story.  In fact it would be pretty naive to assume that the developers didn't have some reason to put them all together like that (unless, indeed, they were being "childish").

The earlier Heroes games (Heroes III and IV especially) don't focus on races, but kingdoms.  Take Tatalia from Heroes III.  Gnolls, Lizardmen and five tiers of monsters in a swamp.  Yes, it's random.  So what?  Try the "Playing With Fire" campaign from Armageddon's Blade and tell me that there's no story there.  On the contrary.  The story of that one 3-scenario campaign alone provides more lore than any 5-scenario bash Heroes V has ever offered me.  Then give Heroes Chronicles: Revolt of the Beastmasters a shot.  If by then you are still trying to say that the Fortress town, full of a "random soup of creatures" lacks a story or lore, there is something wrong with you

1) Santa Defender - Santa Shieldgaurd
2) Santa Spearwielder - Santa Skirmisher
3) Santa Warrior  - Santa Mauler
4) Santa Brawler  - Santa Berserker
5) Santa Slayer - Santa Executioner
6) Santa Priest - Santa Patriarch

The problem is, of course, that a good story affects the gameplay in which graphics are supposed to render a realistic game. This is a fantasy game with realistic graphics and a good story -- you can play tetris if you want gameplay without story at all, or PacMan. Those are arcade games. (if you want, grab a super-detailed graphics edition too, but the game is still the same).

Now back to serious business. Heroes III had quite a lame story, in fact, Angels were cyborgs in disguise. How childish is that? I mean, why the HELL would cyborgs care to be disguised like Angels? Why?? Just to make it look like a "holy" town? That's what you think in war, if you look good or not. Perfect example of childishness
