I think i can say it this easy:
*Oblivion: MODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or we got a epic fail of a game.
If lvl1 you can that anything and even do the mainquest, once you reach lvl20+ you get chased by bandits in Glass and Deadric, invincible guards, killer rats, random creeps that kill you in several hits even if you block.
The farther you level the harder the game becomes, and it got a few neat flaws.
I think this list of screw over stuff pretty much sums up why mods is needed:
-Few quests
-It does not take alot of quests to become the head of a faction
-You are forced to follow your own levels weapons and armore, no matter how screwd you are.
-it is impossible to be truely evil
-Lack of weapon variation: no spear, dual blades, no deadric katanas, no really epic loot.
-Magic is better than in Morrowind, yet it is nerfed in numeros ways and is bad. While you can pick up weapons of your fallen enemies, magic forces you to buy ineffective spells for a no good cost. And you cannot do a tome that you put all the outleveld spells in.
-Leveling, about the same as in the previus
-Scaled quest items, i cry over this. When i complete a quest i want a reward, not getting stuck with patetic weapons. I cry the most when i got my hands on "Fingers of the mountain", if you do this at lvl 1 you get a spell that does like 5-8 damage.
The poly level is insane compared to the results, and it constantely lags.
The scripts are not optimized, i was in the end so tired of the lag that i did the only thing posssible: Downloaded a script optimizing mod along with some other stuff to optimize.

*Morrowind: You could get glass armore or deadric weapons on lvl1 if you bothered. Most of this involves sueside into a deadric shire filled with lvl17 followers who 1-hit you. If you got out alive, you would start questing like a freak and at some point you end up as the leader of several factions after doing a couple of trousends quest perfaction. Add on the fact that you could ask for people's location and you could easly do someting then do that, then you check your quest giver and you allready completed it
A big cone is the magic limits that exist, pure mages are forced to start training with weapons or die to all enemies with reflect and spell absorb. The only potent mage is the star sign that allows 50% absorb effect, simply because regeration is possible without stacking tons of potions.
However mark and recall existed. And tp to closest "X".
You can build a settlement.
It is tecnicaly a pure RPG even in the weapon system, the only attempt to realisme is that you can dodge attacks if you feel like it. Besides it was made "back then" and i still find the gameplay and the enviroment to be alot better than the other game.
Besides now we got mods for removing the 100m fog limit Along with grafic improvement mods that slightly buffs it a several Km ahead of Oblivion.

I just love Morrowind the more, and i think its better.

-Few quests
There's a huge amount of side quests, but I agree that that the main storyline is short and that fast travelling makes them a lot shorter than morrowind.
-It does not take alot of quests to become the head of a faction.
It's alright. You don't have to travel to the end of the earth and back just to kill one skeleton! So the guild quests are an improvement.
-You are forced to follow your own levels weapons and armore, no matter how screwd you are.
Better than being level one full with epic gear... But you obtain epic gear FAR and I mean FAR easier in oblivion.
-it is impossible to be truely evil
Nor in morrowind
-Lack of weapon variation: no spear, dual blades, no deadric katanas, no really epic loot.
Doesn't really matter IMHO. Why need of katanas and spears?
-Magic is better than in Morrowind, yet it is nerfed in numeros ways and is bad. While you can pick up weapons of your fallen enemies, magic forces you to buy ineffective spells for a no good cost. And you cannot do a tome that you put all the outleveld spells in.
Magic is easier in oblivion and in the previous it is explained how you can kill daedroths with basic fireball.
-Leveling, about the same as in the previus.
Easier
-Scaled quest items, i cry over this. When i complete a quest i want a reward, not getting stuck with patetic weapons. I cry the most when i got my hands on "Fingers of the mountain", if you do this at lvl 1 you get a spell that does like 5-8 damage.
I agree that finger of the mountain is a buggy quest, but could you explain more? (Elaborate?)
The poly level is insane compared to the results, and it constantely lags.
That's in every game, nowadays.

My computer is pretty average, and it lagged like hell the first time I started Oblivion and I had to mess with the ini-file for a long time before it got better...

Now a days I use performance mods such as Low-Poly grass, Operation Optimization, Texture Optimizers... I've increased my fps by about 20 with just them, and I haven't really noticed any decrease in graphics (Except for Low-Poly grass, but it feels much better to have huge amounts of ugly grass than a few bushes of super-grass )

EDIT: Oh, and for those that think Mages are underpowered, download Supreme Magicka, best Magic mod ever!

Ok, this is a hard nut actually since bethesda (actually) screwd up big time with Oblivion,it's a great game, but it could have been (probably) the best RPG in history (except for Dungeon Crawl ). Several years after Morrowind (and the expansions) they made Oblivion, I played it for weeks and thought that it was Morrowind all over again, wich was a good thing, but with all those details fixed, less crashes, voices, better bows, better sneaking, better graphics aso. But after a while I noticed that they removed the details you (I) liked the most from Morrowind, like; you cant custumize the "HUD" by changing the size of the minimap, pin/unpin any windows from the inventory. They even removed most of the hotkeys. Now I don't know what game I like, the most, the "simple" one with less bugs and good graphics, or the old "complex" one with crashes and bad graphics but stills eat a good graphic card from the inside. I'm quite mad at Bethesda for screwing up such a chance. It's a bit like AoE III.

true lol once you hit level 25 or so you go to all the bandit caves that you avoided on lower levels, like once I found this random cave in the middle of nowhere and it was a war between like 50 bandits and thieves and stuff just killing each other, you just go in and kill them all and get more armor than you can carry in 4 trips, and enough cash to set you up for life.

there are many stupid things about morrowind as well remember, such as selling all your stuff to that guy to get a decent price, the fact that just about every class except imperial and dark elf was just useless, there are so many useless and ridiculous things in both games but they're both fun.

The thing I preferred about Morrowind was the sense of adventure and immersion in the strange world that was kinda lost in Oblivion.

What about daggerfall? I hear its a game that is 10 times the size, (some even say 100) times the size of morrowind.

I'll tell you why I don't prefer morrowind.. When you have 20 questions to ask, it doesn't matter who you ask, those questions are all listed and sometimes more (sometimes having something to do with your path, sometimes a generic i don't know answer) and its like a 1 out of 100 chance with each question asked your going to get a new answer you were looking for.

I have not played daggerfall yet, until christmas probably, but when I do I hope its not like that.. asking 20 + questions with no good awnsers until you find the npc you were looking for.

Daggerfall was exactly like Arena in terms of asking questions.  You had to find the correct city...then the correct part of the city.  Once there, you would get randomly bad answers until finally some random npc would have the correct answer.

Oblivion for me. The story was good. I enjoyed the fast travel feature, horse riding, and the voice cast. A beautiful game.

Morrowind comes in second. I thought the main quest was better. The world was more exotic. And all the Lost Artifacts of Tamriel are accessible to players. In Oblivion I hated that you couldn't acquire the same powerful armor and weapons that were in Morrowind. But Morrowind stills comes behind Oblivion. That fast travel feature was highly appreciated as it saved so much time.

Lets take a look over the series, and what each games does a great job at:
Arena - Being a generic fantasy game
Daggerfall - The sheer scale and dungeon crawling(EPIC dungeons)
Morrowind - Unmodded gameplay for the most, atmosphere
Oblivion - Waisting potential, MODS!, graphics(given the age its given out, it does not count much)

So........... does there exists a few decent Total conversion for Oblivion yet?

Cool! To bad I don't have Oblivion any more. I stopped playing it when I could play at hardest, get a full ebony armor at level 1 and then get 100 in heavy armor, so it didn't matter that I couldn't carry it. I've also explored all accessible caves (some locked exclusivly for quests), being the head of all guilds and having a hundred in all stats and skills except for luck with the same character (except the caves). I took at least a month, so I spent several months with morrowind, not being done with half the caves, guilds or skills and stats. Morrowind has this feeling that there's always something else to find. It took a couple of days before oblivion lost that feeling.

Huh, doesn't it feel weird to be head of all guilds? Especially the Thieves' Guild and Dark Brotherhood... they're not so fond of each other...

I play more for the roleplaying experience.

Went hunting with my newly created dawg Samum. He's a companion wolf from a mod but the texture sucked so I switched it, he turned out pretty well I think, sure as hell beats the default wolf texture.

Oh and he matches my outfit, most important part.
