The Starcraft Thread

I realize not all of you play this game, as this is a Heroes Forum anyway, so it might not be the best location to put this up. Nevertheless I tried to give it a shot to organize here the players that do play the game (actually it's one of the few I'm playing these days so you could use that as an excuse for me to make this thread). The idea is that, it would be nice to actually play the game with people from this great community, that you know etc, instead of random people online... (myself I like this community simply because of the members, not because of Heroes). Oh, this thread is not dedicated to people like TA that think the game is crap. Please don't bash the thread even if there are no participants in it.

I'll try to make up a list with the players here, you can "sign up" as someone who plays the game by posting. If we are going to keep this thread for some strategies, then it would be better to delete your posts after you have been added to the list, just to keep the thread clean. I don't expect this to become very active (since it's not a Starcraft forum), but I do hope you will join

This way it'll be easier for us to know which ones play the game and we can play with. Of course, if you have a different nickname (as I do), you'll have to mention it when signing up. For example, my nickname is not TheDeath, but Borsuc. (you could also add up your main race as well, mine is Zerg for example)

To get rid of additional problems, let's just all agree to use hamachi to play (of course you can play on BattleNet if you so choose but it'll be safer if we all agree on something that works for everyone). This gets rid of lag, region/zone problems with BattleNet, and CD-key problems (I don't even care if you pirated the game, just have fun). By the way, once you enter Starcraft, go to "Internet UDP" to see the Hamachi game.

By no means will this thread impose any restrictions as to how you play, you can even use BattleNet, if you so agree with your opponent, but I recommend Hamachi. The following are a few advices I would recommend to keep us more organized.

First I'll make a basic Hamachi network for this thread, but if you want to create a private network just for a single game with your opponent (either chat with him or HCM him, doesn't matter how you agreed to play), it's no problem, but with this thread's network it'll be easier, I hope, unless it gets full. So, to prevent that from happening (getting full), here's what I recommend to all of you to do. Please read the following very carefully:

When you are not in the mood for playing, or not available, then don't just go "offline", but rather right-click the network (top-most entry in the list) and right-click and select LEAVE NETWORK!!! A lot of players seem to forget this, and the network gets full. (of course the administrator/owner of the network is the only one which can be offline, since otherwise the network would be destroyed)

Remember that each time I have the chance I WILL kick offline people from the network -- it's not that big deal to re-join when you are available, and this prevents it from getting full. There's a problem with this because I might not always be online every day (sometimes, depending on RL situation), so it's best if YOU voluntarily leave the network, thank you.

Now whether one is in a game or not, I suggest we use the following "rules":

1) If you don't want to play or are not in the mood right now, leave the network, please. That means, if you simply don't want to play, leave the network (the admin is the exception since it needs to stay in the network, but I'll be offline if I'm not in the mood for a SC game).

2) If you are looking for a game, then change your Custom Status and say "looking for a game" OR alternatively modify your nickname (go to Preferences in Hamachi) and put it something like e.g: "Borsuc (looking for a game)" instead of just "Borsuc"

3) If you have agreed on a game with someone, then change your status to "playing" OR modify your nickname as above e.g: "Borsuc (playing)". This prevents messages from people when you're already in a game

These aren't really strict rules you need to follow, but will remove a lot of problems and make it a lot more organized. Also remember to activate the "Online Presence" in the "Preferences->Presence" tab in Hamachi so you can see the custom status.

It's preferable to get a game in hamachi chat, but by no means is that the only way -- HCMs, MSN chats, Yahoo, doesn't really matter (even though I don't have neither ). The point is, it's still important to be on the list to let people know you are a Starcraft player.

NOTE: this isn't some kind of competition. It's made for fun to play this game. If people want competitions they could create a new thread for that. Please no matter how noob you are NO ONE FLAMES OTHERS and no one should be proud of his status. This is supposed to be for fun. If for example, I find someone being extremely a noob (thing is I am not that good myself either, so I could be pwned myself), and he wishes to know some strategies, please post in the thread (if I am in the mood I'll explain it in chat personally, depending if I want).

This thread could be home for replays or strategies, but not over-exaggerating about it. So to keep it clean I propose that after you have been added to the list, you delete your "sign-up" post.

Remember that BEFORE posting any replays here (if you think it's worth it), you and your opponent(s) must agree to put that replay up. I don't want to see any hatred here. Let's all be civilized

Now to play the game, let's agree to use the latest patch for Starcraft Broodwar, called the Starcraft Broodwar Patch 1.15.2.exe, it doesn't even need the CD in the drive anymore (though you'll have to copy some things from the CD, anyway that's explained in the README of the patch).

Regarding what maps we play, well unless otherwise noted for a game, we all agree to play the "standard" maps that come with Starcraft BW initially. Now, I know there are a lot of them, and it's why there's no problem "reviewing" a map before playing. To 'review' a map, go in Single Player and load the map, then in the game press Enter, then type in "black sheep wall" so you view the entire map (note this is a CHEAT that works only in Single Player). In this way you can view the entire map and see how it is and review it

Now, there are some map packages that are also interesting but some people may not have them. The ICCup maps, for instance. If you do have them, create a folder for them called "ICCup" in your Starcraft maps folder, and play it (to remove inconsistencies between players). But IMO if someone doesn't have them (even though you can google to download them) it's better to play the normal maps.

Oh, one thing, you don't necessarily need to have a "main race", that's only if you want to add

Starcraft 2s closed beta will launch this month. So make a free battle.net account if you want to sign up (you will need it later anyway). I will update with some stuff if I get it (though I would rather get in to Cataclysm beta).

I've played through the campaign several times, 3 times (at least) I've played all the way through them in a short period of time. I honestly love this game, but I've never really enjoyed playing online. The style of playing is way to boring, and it all ends up at microing and speed.
But I've played it a lot and I sometimes do play it online, so add me to the list! And about the teams; I enjoy protoss the most, in theory I think terran is the best, but in the reality I'm best with zerg. Tricky.

Well I kinda moved on from this (sorry), with my new computer I don't even have hamachi installed anymore (even less Starcraft). I'll add you to the list though and still update this thread for others.

If others want to take my place (because I'm not very active on HC these days), we might work something out.

EDIT: the post is 1 year old so I can't even modify it anymore lol
