No Despite being known for his love and peace talk, Ueshiba was an arrogant fellow. He was selective and he had no plans to teach it to the masses. That only changed after the war when he saw aikido as the means to reconcile the world and return people back to their natural balance. It was then that he started teaching it to the average person.

Of course, that man's life is like a fairy tale. He had to live through a lot and trained in a lot of martial arts for decades before he started developing aikido. Even students he had been teaching for years could not really comprehend his words or depth of technique as he was too far ahead. Much of his background that made his art so effective is lost or requires years and years of specific training to attain. It took him a freaking 22 years to perfect his favourite technique! I do not believe one can come close to that without a sensei willing to show him/her the technique origins, variations, applications etc both in a combative and a controlled situation and then there would have to be a lot of personal work outside of the dojo. Not that you need all those techniques and their countless variations, a few to several techniques should be enough if you have gotten down the body movement, timing and awareness. The techniques themselves are an afterthought.

I do not remember if I've ever linked you to Nishio's videos. Now that guy was a killer. Unconventional by the standards of his time, he did not blindly follow what he was taught and kept evolving so as to understand it better.

Before aikido he studied judo (6th Dan Kodokan Judo), karate (5th Dan Shindō jinen-ry&#363, iaido (7th Dan Nihon Zendoku Iaido) and jōdō and also Shintō Musō-ryū jōjutsu and Hōzōin-ryū sōjutsu. Skills gained from them he managed to smoothly merge into his own specific aikido style - Yoseikai - where all techniques can be performed with the wooden sword bokken in hand as well as without weapons, and his weapon systems has few similarities to the more common system that derives from Morihiro Saito. He held the title of an Aikikai shihan and also created a new school of Iaido with forms from aikido, called Aiki Toho Iaido or Nishio-ryu Iai. In 2003 Nishio received the Budo Kyoryusho award from Japanese Budo Federation for his lifetime contribution to development and worldwide propagation of aikido. He died in March 2005 aged 77.

That's what I call an awesome grandpa

Roundhouse kicks, high kicks etc. rock!

Sure they do - when you show off. In a normal fight, they are too slow, too easy to predict and counter, and give too much opportunity for the opponent to take you down. That's why nobody uses them at MMA. In a real fight, the simpler, the better - straight punch, low kick, elbow. That's all you really need.

Very good thread

I am sorry I didn't browse all  but my two cents: sometimes high kicks works pretty well, see for example Cro Cop vs younger Emelianenko

I  like MMA very much and I loved to watch Fedor's fights. Some of them I have even in my video collection

BTW Who is now on the top after The Last Emperor's retirement?

Talking of the arrogance, the japanese martial arts are so full of the crap it's bordering on outright mental illness.

You have a country where every family had their own martial arts style, some even several. They were also protected like trade secrets so they never got to spreading most of them. 90% of the styles are either dead or have, like, three practicers left.

Imagine what we'd have if they'd actually got the masters together to fix the mess. Sure, the students went around and learned from different guys but it's still so, so limited. But that's what competition is about, everyone trying to be better than the next so everyone is worse off than if they worked together.

But hey, we get these people who've spent 70 years on playing around with ways to mess up the human body. Some of them are just priceless. Like, there's a master of a karate style who can literally make people fall by just touching their hand. Of course being the jackass all japanese masters are his number one student(who is like 60 himself) has no idea how it works. So when the old guy goes drinking he just messes around with people with it.

Yeah. That's exactly what is missing in Jonas otherwize accurate analize.
They kept secret of their tecnics and didn't teach them to the other families because what they were perfecting was a way of kicking their but.

And it wasn't "every family", it was only the samurai families, after all a small percentage even of the japanese professional soldiers and I think not every family had is own marcial art stile only the most important ones.

Where I agree completly with Jonas is that japanese tradicional marcial artists ar so full of crap that is a pain in the ass to learn anything from them.
I heard one time a comparison (I think it was Osho who said it) that I find pretinent - to perfect a samurai they did it the same way that with a bonsai, constrainning the roots, cutting some the branches and tying some others so they grow in the position you want them. There is no space left for personnality to develop.

The name of the game is having the wisdom to use it where it counts

I've heard stories of old masters teaching their student incorrectly for years till he gained their trust he was ready to know the true path. That's some serious trolling.

Which really doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Fits perfectly into the east asian psyche.

Someone once said that in Russia you don't trust technology, you trust people. So if west trusts technology then it could be said that in East Asia you trust neither.

Once upon a time, someone decided to make an aikido festival to unite the masters and show the art to the whole world. He went to Japan, contacted some masters and then the doshu, the spiritual successor of the founder. The doshu politely refused to participate and asked who else was contacted, out of curiosity. Soon after, the masters started withdrawing except for one who felt he should honour his promise. After all.. a foreigner uniting the aikido world? Inconceivable!

I remember this, there was actual blackmail involved there too if I recall correctly.

Big guys can be as agile as smaller. Believing thick = fast, muscular = slow is wrong, it's just another urban legend.

Even if when I'd praticed marcial arts in my late thirtys I did it only for fitness and "meditative" propuses, I'm close to share your  point of view about them and human physiology, but I truly find this last assumption strange.
If you see a serie of box matches from different categories you'll notice the light-weights guys usually play much more on speed tecnics then the heavy-weights. So experience seems to show us that skinny guys tend to be faster.

I think doomforge was referring more to conditioned reflexes, timing and body management. And a big guy can improve amazingly in those, I have seen this for myself. I'd met a tall, muscular guy at an aikido seminar and could not believe my eyes, he could close the distance and mess you up amazingly fast. The fact that he had a number of dan in several martial arts and a bodyguard background might have helped a bit
