There are still some "sects" left that practice some kind of ninja. I think that most don't exist because Ninjas are not used for entertainment if you know what I mean

just because you probably heard of a bad Ninja doesn't mean they are that way. Ninja and Samurai were almost the best bodyguards and fighters at the time.

Samurai were good fighters. Ninja were not.

Samurais are trained for open combat, ninjas are trained for assasination.
Any ninja can be a uber fighter, but that is more of a personal style.
In general, a Ninja does not have that much combat experience. They are rather doing backstabbing and murding in your sleep.

As for Kunoichi being better than Shinobi in unarmed combat, it was all about the training. A Kunoichi was trained for being able to fight with no weapons, but that would  ONLY happen IF they got caught and deadlocked. And if they ran out of weapons(because guards was armed in 99% of the cases).
In 90%(even more i guess) of the cases, they would got away and whoever was ordered to be killed was long-dead by the  time he/she was found.

There was alot of male leaders around in Japan at that time, and since only 5% was not straight that means the 95% would be likely to hire womens and prostitutes(aka they got inside).
This is why Kunoichi is known to take advantage of their gender, easyer to get in. Allways easy to get out.

Exactly. That doesn't mean some Ninjas aren't good fighters. Ninjas themselves are not a "martial artists".

Saying Ninjas fight poorly is like saying humans fight poorly -- when in fact, it is generalizing. Being "human", by itself, doesn't have anything to do with fighting directly -- some do, some don't.

Some Ninjas can use the same martial arts or techniques that some Samurais use. Some Ninjas can be beggars (well not REALLY but you get the idea). In itself, it doesn't say anything about that. Just as "human" doesn't say anything about fighting

Ok, question: If an average Nordic Viking and an average Japanese Samurai fought, who would win?

With average I mean average fighting skills.

Tried it.  My dojo was above a garage and the 18 year old sparring with me (12) didn't quite realize that using full force on a kid was not a good idea.  So that was that.  I suppose it doesn't matter.  I'm infinetely more dangerous than any martial artist now anyways.

I'd say Viking

Japanese martial arts aren't made to defeat scandinavian muscular berserkers with broadswords and broadaxes.

They're designed to defeat asian people!

The Viking on the other hand, just see a little person with some sort of strange, foreign blade.

Samurais can beat up even gorillas, why would Vikings pose a problem? They're pretty similar

But being big doesn't make someone slow...

And I'm pretty sure Vikings weren't really bad fighters, I'm sure they had a pretty good swordwork.

@Death: If someone taught a gorilla how to handle a katana, I'd be scared!

I never said that, but the Samurai's speciality is his speed, unlike the Strength which is the viking's speciality

I still think the Viking would win... It's hard to discuss since the two people never really met (Or at least I've never heard about it.)

Oh, and I forgot to mention that most Vikings wore one of these too:

You see? They were so great that their techniques were so hard to master, and people eventually stopped learning the way of the Samurai

Samurai still exist, as do Pirates and Ninjas? They just faded into obscurity. Katanas are still made presently and in Japan Samurai Schools still exsit (That's what I heard of it)

And a Samurai more powerfull thana Viking or a Medieval Soldier? Their weaponry work fundamentally different. A Katan requires a lot of Speed to work properly, whil  the Viking Axe or the Medieval Two-Handed Sword needs brute force, rather than  Dexterity.

All these weapons have the same level of Fatality, if used properly.

There's no such thing as "samurai schools", that would be learning to live by Bushido, which basically means living honourably and punishing those who goes against Bushido by decapitation... Not very useful in modern day's society

If it's the Samurai martial art you're talking about, there's Ju Jutsu, Kendo, Iaido schools etc...

But in the old days, there were so many different sword fighting styles and famous schools, so maybe there's still at least some still alive?

I know that the Masamune clan still lives, they make the most expensive swords on the earth
