Good luck with your exam! How do they work? The martial art schools here suck, so there's barely any serious exams. I'd love to try sword-fighting, hopefully I'll find something sometime.

Nothing new, since everything is closed for summer. Will start up 20th next month, probably first judo then move on from there to see what else I can find.

You guys are probably better off, you have no idea how hot and sweaty training is nowadays. Exams are rather serious and are going to get stricter as of this one. There's a number of practice moves and techniques that you are examined at, sensei and 3 other blackbelts overlook the whole process and later decide whether you've passed. Here's some that I'll be examined at, Adrius might recognize a few.

Tobi koshi ukemi.
Shikko mae and ushiro
Ryotedori ikkyo, nikyo and tenchinage. Ryotedori means both hands held.
Aihanmi katatedori shihonage. Opposite hand.
Shomenuchi iriminage. From overhead shop.
Gyakuhanmi katatedori kaitenage. Same hand. It looked so complicated not long ago.

Bo training sounds fun alright. Never used one but I'm pretty certain you need a lot of room to avoid breaking anything. So far satisfied with my trusty jo

Badass stuff. Fricking ouch.

Cool, the Uke followed very well, if he didn't he'd probably get pretty damn hurt. I'd add a leg-reaping to that move to ensure that the opponent falls, but then I guess it'd be called something else

I do my Bo exercises outside. Mosquitos and horseflies fear me.

The spinning momentum from iriminage feels good. Sensei suggested that we slip arm under neck during the turn and slowly lift during the tenkan while the other hand pushes back of the neck forward. Not quite as neat but you feel more in control, that head isn't going anywhere.

I should probably practice a bit the way shown in the video after those exams are over. It's your first instinct after all, you may not have time to try my way.

I'm happy you enjoy your training Elvin. Nothing worse than to train a MA you don't like "because it is better than others in a MMA fight". Yeah, maybe BJJ is better than Aikido, but what's the point of training a "superior" MA if you hate the training? The speed at which you learn things is a lot slower if you don't enjoy the training too. You may end up being pretty behind everyone in terms of ability and fed up with the training after a while.

That's why I'm doing boxing only now. I like BJJ but my knee made it impossible, and even though things like wrestling or Muay Thai might work better in MMA, I don't give a snow. Not to mention both would stress my useless knee even more.

I like boxing very much. Especially agile, joyful boxing, even though I normally am impressed by strength and mass much more than speed. My favorite boxer of all time is Prince Naseem - the man got serious STYLE there, oh and btw, he lost only one fight - his last one, winning 37 in a row.

In the end it comes down to how the art fits you. Not having tried others I can't really tell what would be the one best suited to me but I've set my mind on making whatever I start work.

Not surprised you had started something in the meantime, we should spar someday

LEVEL UP!

So how does Kyu work in Aikido? You get anything besides the feeling of accomplishment, respect from your fellow Aikidoka etc...?

In Judo we have all these coloured belts... makes the kids more motivated I guess. Though it ain't like that in japanese Judo as far as I know, there it's white belt until you reach 1st Dan.

No freebies, we are ripped off. In younger classes the kids do get coloured belts but we have white till 1st dan. Think we wear hakama around 1st or 2nd kyu, funny thing as I was always under the impression that it came after the black belt. I think there's also a brown belt in higher kyu but not entirely sure.

I've heard that coloured belts are used in other schools though considering we have exams every 3 months it would kinda miss its point.

Here in Karate the belts go white-yellow(5th kyu)-orange(4th kyu)-green(3th kyu)-blue(2rd kyu)-brown(1st kyu)+black(dans upwards from 1st).

The yellow belt is attainable by 3 months of practice and orange belt in the same year if you're not a total klutz.

But green is lightyears ahead that. You need excellent condition, flexibility and control over your body, controlled in-step roundhouses to the head with the front leg are not easy. There are a lot of techniques you need to be able to do instinctively and you have to clear a free match.
I'd put that two to three years after orange with most people. More if you're in a bad shape less if you're in good.
After green you have to start teaching the lower belts.

Blue a year after that.

Brown a year or two after that.

Black three or four years after that.

Well the techniques and other exercises I saw in 5th and 4th kyu I mostly knew, I am pretty confident I could prepare within reasonable timeline. But 3rd kyu was a killer, not only are the moves more advanced but you get a sizeable load of them too.

Good thing is that in the next exams we have weapons, mostly jo.

Congrats, Elvin!

I found a pretty good club in centrum, just 20 minutes (fast) walk from where I live where you can train all ju-jutsu, judo, karate, kick boxing, krav maga, kung fu, tae kwon do ... and they also have amateur MMA fights there. Guess who's gonna join when they start up

It's extremely expensive though, the cheapest alternative is somewhere above 50$ a month, and that is if you sign up for an 18 month contract. Anyways, no news from me other than that. Doesn't start until 23. August.

Some new cool moves I'm eyeing with interest nowadays.

Sankyo kubishime, a combo of sankyo with choke That's one mean move.

Hiji garami, elbow wrap ftw.

Fingerlock baby!

Tenchinage, heaven and earth throw. Shown this before but this video is much better.

Reverse kubishime, reverse choke and armlock

Hiji Otoshi, elbow trapping.

I've seen them performed at my dojo, save for the first and last one. Principles are always the same even if they seem to deviate from the norm. There are many variations and combos, like I said I couldn't even find a full listing of the techniques

Love the Hiji garami!

Never been a big fan of fingerlocks. They're effective as hell, yeah, but I consider them rather cheap.

About the Hiji garami, I am just curious as to who would try to grab your hands when they're not up in guard no comment otherwise, really.

Reverse kubishime ... oh yeahh.

Hiji Otoshi, I don't see exactly how the punch actually stops. Chances are it will still come, though not with the force it would have if you could get your whole back into it.

Yeah I'd rather not risk an attack passing through, best way is not to be there. It probably depends on how much you are aware of your opponent's body but sometimes you never know.

Better use something that puts the opponent down without risking anything. Efficiency over style, imo. But hey, who am I to talk? I catch punches in the stomach cause I don't find use in blocking them. I'm more a brutal than technical fighter.
