Does said person just want to learn self defense or what?

The "just teach me to hurt people quick" attitude is something I encounter quite often

He wants to learn an art rather than pure beating but he is afraid that it might take too long. He wants something practical.

Uh, can't think of any to be honest.

Any serious art is going to beat the basics into the newcomers over and over and over. There are no real shortcuts in terms of time... if you wanna be good ya gotta dedicate yourself.

I'd say Judo/Ju Jutsu/BJJ if he's looking for something other than a striking art.

I obviously don't mean fast as in weeks/months fast. Just not godawfully slow like aikido He has problem with striking.

From my experience two years are not enough to use effectively. You might 'master' a few techniques from a few attack routines but not gain full awareness and response to any random attack at full speed. There is a transition period between cooperation and straight hostility and mastering the flow in cooperation alone takes its time. First couple of months you even feel you have been wasting your time as anything you learn feels slipping away like sand through your fingers Too many elements to get right in a short time.

How is his physical condition? Grappling could be a possibility if he is in good shape, as even the simplest stuff you learn there can be applied rather fast and at great effect

His fitness is not all that great admitedly. Which is why I advised something like jujutsu.

EDIT:

Turns out we will be trying kali / eskrima, what are the odds? Sticks, blades, unarmed combat and weapon disarms, I'm sold

Fingers bleeding, cuts on chest, scratches on neck, legs pulsing with pain due to exhaustion.

I'm back in Judo again after a 4 month break (simply no Judo going on during school breaks). Hells to the yes.

Went up against my first BJJ guy today. Strong dude. Bit too reliant on strength... pal tells me that once I figure him out I will have no problem.

Got him with a classic O-Soto-Gari. Felt the pride oozing away from him... being thrown by the new guy in the dojo heh...

Still got my ass handed to me quite a bit, as expected after a 4 month absence. Still felt I did good considering we did constant full-power sparring for like 2 hours.

Sounds like you had a really nice training, Adrius.

While I have the utmost respect for martial arts professionals and geniuses, I, myself, would rather avoid physical conflict if possible. Trained in the arts of Parkour, and generally swift movement, conflict seems unlikely. I'm glad there's a martial arts thread on the forum.

Then aikido would be just the thing for you as it focuses on mobility, dodging and preventing harm to an opponent

My first kali lesson was enjoyable, it is fun to start anew and with a friend no less. The session was mostly composed of 2 min drills of striking combinations and physical exercice, simple and practical though I was often getting confused or stuck Mind understands but body does not readily follow ^^ We practiced some block / punch / kick / elbow / knee combinations and knife attack / defense which is pretty much where I was lacking. Of course I will have to increase my stamina, that kind of thing is exhausting.

what i always wondered is, in hundreds of movies and not neccesseraly action ones, we see people knocking each other unconscious with a single punch or  a single blow to the neck. i 've never seen it in real life, and it seems to me a lot of boxing matches would end in ten secons if this was the case. so is there any level of truth in that, has anyone ever witnessed it?

Sure, if you can just get the head to shake hard enough you'll get a concussion and go unconscious.

Happens in boxing all the time as well, it's called a knockout. Obviously they're trained to protect their heads to keep that from happening.

But a knockout always comes after many punches. if a guy knocks out his opponent in round 1 with his first punch everybody will think the game is fixed. and these are trained, pro punchers.

It happens suddenly a lot of times. A knockout isn't made because of a continous beating down on an opponent's brain, like you're reducing it or something. It's just a sudden, shaking motion to the brain causing it to smash against your skull.

Shazam, you're out cold.

I dunno about boxing since I don't watch it very much, but I've seen plenty of 1-hit-KOs in MMA without anyone crying foul. When you see the skull vibrating there's really no sense in crying FAAAAKE.

Although the internet will cry fake at anything from girls' boobs to moonlandings so whatever.

Mhm, but you can't train your head. Some people have very short necks allowing them to resist the rocking motion caused by a blow very well, but in general it makes no difference.

If you get a strong enough blow to your head that rocks your world, you're out cold, doesn't matter if you're Steve from accounting or King Kong.

It's part of what makes fighting entertainment so fun Any second a guy can throw a strike that just finishes everything.

And a single blow to the neck will knockout or at least knockdown if you do it right. It's fun, try it sometime.

I'm back in the game, baby!

Started up MMA today (kickboxing on monday, though I figure I will focus heavier on MMA) .. and it was awesome! I am a bit rusty, especially in my standup-defense .. but I still managed to beat my sparring partners, one who has practiced MMA for three years now and Krav Maga earlier. My strongpoint now is the groundgame apparently, where the instructor were really impressed .. four sparring matches in a row, four wins. During the last one I were extremely winded though, and barely managed to tap him out using a submission (regular choke, really really simple).

Great!

And I've been out of it for 1½ years due  to circumstances outside my control really, there's no decent karate group here.

Decent kickboxing and really good MMA groups but I'm not so fond of their training style, I don't like to do all that physique.

Maybe I should quit for good. Would be one less thing nagging at the back of my head. Plus I'm old enough already to quit all this sports stuff...
