MMA is extremely physical, sure, but you'll also feel really good about yourself afterward! And kickboxing ain't that different from karate, or what? It's just boxing+karate kicks

I was saying kickboxing isn't entirely different ... MMA is something else entirely, it's much more physically demanding and, well, effective.

This is about karate difference to kickboxing
MMA is pretty close to my style of karate, except it's a sport so it misses the martial art aspect.
I just don't like their training style because there's too much physique training. Also, it costs a snowload of money around here since the club is actually really good.
I'm more easy going so I like lazy practice and not something where you actually aim for a result.

After a month I'm getting better in form and physical shape though getting both kali and ground fighting in one day will still leave my body tired for the next day and a half. Our instructor's style is a lot different from aikido in a way I like.. I do miss aikido but for the time being I am enjoying myself here and the exercise is a bonus. Lately the training is becoming increasingly rigorous which can be hell in moist days, the other day I felt like I had been boiling in my own sweat But I am steadily getting fitter and can take it better. I'm fine with footwork, balance and striking/lock combinations(though my kicks leave a lot to be desired) and we're only getting warmed up with the dual sticks and knife fighting. Knife training is fun and lately we get to spar with plastic knives, gets your blood pumping with excitement I have mixed feelings about ground fighting but there is something appealing about it, will form a better opinion after a few more sessions.

Today was submission wrestling, where I learned rear necked choke (turns out I've done it slightly wrong this entire time ). I also managed to beat a guy who won silver at the regional submission wrestling championship, using that exact choke. I did miss pounding though, as I felt slightly handicapped not being allowed to strike when I had the opportunity that many times!
But still ... LOVED IT!

Four and a half months into kali, my body feels more loose and mobile and my transition between striking and locking has gotten smoother. I enjoy the system's high comboability and short range, it gives you a lot of freedom and makes it hard for the opponent to guard once the first strike slips past his defense. Had a seminar this weekend and our instructor said that most of the times he had won a match he would check on his opponent and find him still conscious and dazed. The more common response was confusion: Wtf did you just do? He gave some handy tips on close combat along with some real life scenarios where he had to deal with aggression in a way that would not draw attention from those nearby. Some (paraphrased) legendary pieces of advice:
- If you are against an experienced knife wielder you will never win. Buy a ****ing gun and shoot the b@st@rd!
- I don't care how many hits will slip in. What I know is that my opponent's face will look like **** afterwards.
- I rate street fighters higher than martial artists. After 10 years most will do the same thing, just more efficiently. No imagination. It's like fun sex and boring sex, it's supposed to be fun!
- Grab his nuts. You know Chinese nuts? Then upwards elbow on the descending head, pull from the back of the neck for a headbutt on the nose, then go your separate ways while tripping him all the while saying 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry!'
Ps he did the latter so discreetly that you could barely notice he was attacking the other guy. Too close for the attacks to show, very natural movement without the tiniest hint of tension, innocent face and apologizing for 'bumping' on him. Man that guy was so much fun.

A very important piece of advice.
In general I'd say that you just can't win against any knife wielder. The chance of getting a random mortal wound is so absurdly high that it's not worth it. Unless you're totally screwed, can't escape and have to fight for life or something...

I've done my share of knife sparring and I have seen no shortage of slashes/stabs connect, whether the attacker is amateur or advanced. Even I can can score hits against the stronger students though their attacks connect far more often than mine Some attacks come so fast that you cannot react at all and the range can be pretty deceptive. An interesting quote from our instructor's master: The difference between you and your instructor is that he knows how much bleeding he can take to take you down.
Niice..

Submission 101 - How to knock someone out
Didn't know about that... looks pretty handy. Also love the obligatory "THAT **** WOULDN'T WORK IN REAL LIFE YOU NOOB" comment... in a brawl getting to that position is ****ing easy as hell.

That's actually the "judo chop" done in Bond movies and the like. There was a short discussion about it somewhere in this thread. I've mentioned it a few times. It's a fun way to play around with friends.

http://store.aikidojournal.com/systema-with-martin-wheeler-structure-breaking-using-strikes/
This has gotten me curious. I used to control an opponent's body through pushing/pulling/redirecting/locking but never really considered this could also be achieved through striking. In kali, you can start a combo of striking where one strike sets up the other so that you can keep hitting. And it is rather logical, I'd expect most people to flinch, drop their shoulder, lower their jaw etc depending where they were hit, especially if they did not see it coming. Systema seems to take this one step further. I do not know how effective that is but I find the idea interesting. Knowledge of pressure points is a great tool.

Quite a few select pressure points for where he hits too, I feel sorry the black beard.
We have something like that in karate but not nearly as extensive. Usually two, at most three in combination.
For example, hit the liver, kick the same side outer thigh, it's a combination of pressure points but also muscle groups, if done correctly the enemy will be knocked down, even knockouts are a possibility.
This is a lot more present in krav maga. It utilises the body's reactions against the opponent in pretty much everything.
For example, the basic defense against a choke from behind, when standind, is a hammer fist to the balls followed by an elbow to the now descending jaw with the same hand. That's quite possibly a knockout right there. As a bonus the whiplash effect might break his neck.
