He's failing at it.
The other guys are coming at him slowly due to demonstration purposes but his movements are constantly faster than theirs even with a few quick movements inbetween. That means he is unable to defend himself if moving at the same pace as the attackers.

Aikido employs a number of those tricks  I appreciate that kind of softness in his movement.

Kind of a harsh assumption to make, might just be the ukes being insecure or something else.
But yeah, defending yourself perfectly against 3 guys with knives is kind of a superman thing to do, but I still find his moves very skillful.

Not really, that's exactly what happens when you're doing a slow training match and realise you're going to get hit. When your brain is late your body automatically tries to compensate. If you're not all moving at the same speed it doesn't have realtime applications.

Not exactly relevant to modern martial arts, but here are a series of vids on medieval weaponry and tactics that deal with debunking myths and discussing how these things were actually used on the battlefield.
I really like this guy, watched hours I think, learned a lot.
If you're just gonna watch a few of them, watch the points he makes about shield and shieldwalls.
Also this one about double handed weapons that's not on the list unfortunately. If you think about it what use is a two-hander on the battlefield? You're so vulnerable to spears and arrows and **** it's ridiculous. He explains one possible use for it since it's currently unknown really.
Really interesting stuff imo.

So I went out to eat today and noticed I totally have a Gracie BJJ academy as my neighbour o____O One station away from where I live.
****s to the yes, gotta go try it out some day. Would be awesome to train under a Gracie.

Very nice. In my dojo people have not fully returned from summer so I occasionally get sessions where I am the only student or one of the two. It's amazing for brushing up my preferred techniques and working on my trapping  The latter is derived from wing chun so we can't really practice it with a full class, it diverges from the aikido mentality. Free-style trapping is just fun

Wow, I'm jealous
Meanwhile, I've been inactive quite a long time now.
Might go back to MA next year. Can't decide whether I want to do Boxing, or Sambo now.
Boxing seems favorable since my knees are in very bad shape and can't support takedowns well.

I kind of want to try some boxing but I don't feel like straying from aikido again now that I am picking up It was nice that kali had panantukan, a form of dirty boxing ^^

Oh, Lindybeige! I stumpled upon his videos not long ago while doing research and could not help subscribing. Very reasonable reasoning about ancient weaponry. People who romanticize weapons and apply gaming logic into reality are really annoying.
Was also surprised to see that he also has participated in some big dance event in Sweden.

Quite complicated, but executed from an enemy reaction that is very predictable.

Seems awfully complicated with too much stuff to go wrong.
Of course, getting into that starting position is pretty hard in the first place.

I was about 9 months into Tae Kwan Doe (spelling not sure)
Then a guy (highest ranked student in class) holding a practice target decided to pull a joke and lift it on me when we are practicing some spin kicks. As a moving target I would expect to move, but this was a target that is logically supposed to remain stationary. Anyways I spin out of control and break my left shoulder.
... By the way a few years later my mom and I ran into him. He was instructing martial arts at YMCA. Almost 20 years later I have to work out with limitations based on this injury. (standard benchpress is ruled out for instance but inclines are okay)

Tulwar swords are awesome
Very smart design. The technique at 4:50 was a really interesting horseback attack, never considered that.
