you can't really have an anti-christian faction without falling into the one thing that i'm trying to avoid, the classic "Good vs Evil" split between the factions. It won't really matter if it's salvation, it's still demons whose logical campaign will mainly be the usual slaughter, rape, desecrate, make sims 3, rinse and repeat.

that brings me into an interesting concept. Watch ot for

The Lyrians:

The Lyrians are united by Faith.

The Lyrians origin in the Carthan lands, but have been driven away from them a couple of centuries ago. Now they dwell south of them, but still cannot forget their loss, which also brought together the two earlier opposing factions inside the Lyrians.

The Lyrian humans are highly devoted and faithful, and feed from their huge crop farming areas. They are usually extraordinary brave and rather prideful.

There are very different Lyrian spirits, since especially those had been arch enemies in the longer past, but now having lost their homelands has made them allies.

Humans:

Tier 1: Pilgrim
Tier 2: Watchman
Tier 3: Crusader
Tier 4: Witchhunter
Tier 5: Inquisitor
Tier 6: ?
Tier 7: Templar
Hero: Paladin
Racial: Training (pilgrim>watchman>crusader(>?)>templar; witchhunter>Inquisitor(>?))

Spirits:

Tier 1: Imp
Tier 2: Gargyll
Tier 3: Saint Spirit
Tier 4: Succube
Tier 5: Guardian/Cherub
Tier 6: Pit Spawn
Tier 7: High Angel
Hero: (Grey) Cleric
Racial: ?(perhaps some blessing skill?)

Actually, this is really good.

Maybe not the training racial skill (Carthans already have that), but something similar.

I was thinking Totem magic for the spirits (a little bit like Rune magic, only you can only have 5 spells)

yeah, probably a good idea.

I'll start work on the Russka soon.

any suggestion for units? these are essentially russians and slavic people, so we can have pikemen, maruaders, state troops, vampires, werewolves, Poleviks and everything in between.

And another question: I know this is supposes as "low fantasy"...does it mean there shall be no mythical beasts amongst the humans as mounts? I'm not speaking of too spectacular things, just griffins, unicorns etc. It would broaden the mount variety.

Edit: And for the Tarakee...what about putting Tribal Warrior to place two and instead giving them Puma or so, in accordance to some of the other factions?!?

no, mythological creatures are to stay in the spirits section. Mainly because... well, they're mythological, aren't they? most of those creatures come from stories, and haven't existed in the world as we know it.

Though I can see the problem we are facing... maybe, like you have done, differenciate between more types of cavalry.

edit: yeah, thats fine.

Ah, what a novell idea!
I love it.
As for your Ruska faction -though I disaprove of singling out Rusian out of all the slavik tribes, I can see why you westerners would do so - I'll trow out as much as I can think of.
First, I sugest changing the heroes - I sugest bogatyrs instead of boyarts - those can be used as an upgrade to Cavalry (yeah, I know, ukraine war nomads into rusian nobles, but I don't think any sane person would really object) since bogatyrs are literarly the lore heroes.
For magic, I'd rather use Vila.
units - chuck out werewolf from 'magic' line up and put up vucar or neuri as a banisher - the neuri being humans turning into wolves (or rather young man dresing in wolfskin to chase away evil spirits at some ceremonies). And anyway, ancient Slavs didn't actually diferentiate much between vampires and verewolves except that vampires looked more humanlike.
As for other nonmagic types, all I can think of would be Pandur - a militiaman, or police oficer.
as for mythological, now lets see:
tier 1 domovoi - a guardian house spirit typically believed to take on an appierance of the house owner or look like a cat or a dog.
polevik is good enough for tier 2
same goes for rusalka and t3
for #4 Since we lack flyers, howabout zhar-ptica which is slavic firebird (truth be told that is almost the exact translation ) But in truth, the only true relation to fire it has is that it glows in red/gold/orage or combinations therof, thus looking like it is actually on fire. It should be around the size of a pheasant or a peacock.
t5: howabout Likho as a trixter - an embodyment of bad luck and misfortune, often imagined as a small, withered, one eyed crone.
downgrade Vampire to t6
as for t7 I'd sugest a variation of old slavic gods caled Triglav which is literaly translated as three-head. It is believed to be the melding or a product of colaboration of slavic gods, but which exactly gods change with the time period, era, or tribe. Anyway his three heads represent sky earth and underworld and the balance thereof. He is depicted most comonly as a tall three headed man with blindfold (in some version band of gold) around either the central head or all three heads.

Pride, I feel, is too similar to Honour for the Jangsin, really. Hope was the idea that they are fighting for their freedom, and when the others are distracted, they take their land back.

That sounds more like focus or patience, but that might just be me.

Anyways, a querry: Since mythical part (if you accept my sugestions) is universally slavic, meaning no specificaly russian elements, and you do already have ukraine kozaks, would you mind non-magic units from other slavic countries (Czech, Polish, Slovak, Croat, Serb, Slovenian, and small ex SSSR)?

essecentially, I was going for the general Slavic population for the Ruska. they aren't specifically Russian, but it's the easiest country to identify.

Ok, I'v done some research, and this is the best I can do. If anyone can do better, they are free to take a go on it.

The Ruska

the Ruska are a stoic and powerful people, ancient enemies of the norns, the Jangsin and the Asrin. Coming from the tundra of north east, they have worked relentlesly on the expansion of their empire subjugating and integrating several smaler tribes along the way.

the Ruska humans are reliant on their own belief in themselves and their empire. On the battlefields their cavalry and wild cats strike terror even unto the fiercest hearts, but their true power lays at their ancestral knowledge of the spirit world which gives their bogatyrs the skill to banish even the strongest of netherwordly beings.

the Ruska spirits are reliant on their powerful trickster abilities, taking bonuses out of enemies and raining misfortune as they please. Their Vilas are bound to the spirit world so closely they can weave delusions and illusions so skillfully it's easy for them to keep their people safe from harm.

Humans
Hero: Bogatyr
Skill: Spiritbreaker
lvl1: Lynx (medium sized wildcat, berserker)
lvl2: Pandur (militiaman with staff)
lvl2: Ajduk (Hunter/Woodman guerrila, archer)
lvl4: Husar/Hetman (armored cavalry relaying on sabres/heavy maces)
lvl5: White tiger
lvl6: Vucar (banisher, werewolf)
lvl7: Kosak/Boyar (Very fast horse archer with hit and run and double shot)

*I left out your widowmaker since I have no knowledge of any such military term as aplicable to this concept

Spirits
Hero: Vila
Skill: Illusion
lvl1: Domovoi
lvl2: Polevik
lvl3: Rusalka
lvl4: Zhar-Ptica
lvl5: Likho
lvl6: Vampir
lvl7: Triglav

that good enough?
