I ussually take cash only from tresure, but there are cases where you desperately need a quick one ore two level ups fast....to get expert earth from basic for example...the one level can be a huge difference....

You make it sounds sooo much fun playing online. I really need a not-so-lazy connection! But I'm fine playing vs. the AI so far. I don't learn anything, but it's fun.

@Consis

hehe, i met a guy in war3x, and we became friends very fast, and after a month i learned he was danish like me(i really don't know why i didn't ask earlier) but we've been friends for 2˝ years, and we want to meet eachother very soon.

@Stiven

You just make Heroes sound so boring, because everything is planned to the bone, maybe that is because i'm just a guy who thinks he has skill, but sucks badly, but that is the truth. Besides i play HoMM4 more than i play HoMM3, and in HoMM4, you can't chain like that.

Unfortunatelly i tottaly understand you.Now xp or cash? There are many factors that can affect on this decision for exn which difficulty do you start the game?Is your region filled with g.pieces?Do you have external dwellings? But,at the beggining the gold is most important, there's nothing like raw strength of units, especially if you are planning rush.More castles-more gold, more units-bigger chance to fight stronger neutral units.Beggining is crucial for further developement and later on stronger Hero will decide
and that is if yor opponent is slow/fast as you.

Frick, there is something which is great about Heroes... that is u don't need such a great connection... doesn't matter if its slow... what u want is for ur connection to be reliable.

Maybe so... But then a Heroes-game can last very long, so I think I pass anyway.

When I play against a person in my comunity we always choose a certain set of rules : no necro , no conflux, no diplomacy, imposible maps, army strong etc and most important : a second,third... castle Just For Money(no creatures at all). That means u only have to fight with the troops that are inside the first castle. It wasn't me the one who initiated this rule, everybody plays like this.
So the main goal is to make as many troops as possible in a short period of time.In order to make more troops you must develop your unit buildings faster then your oponent(with a week earlier if possible). That means u realy need money and resources. So it is recomanded that in this kind of situations to take the money,at least until you develop your trops to the point of having enough money from the capitol, gold mines etc that in a week u can make all your units whithout a suppliment  of gold from chests.

It depends for me. If it's like 500 exp, then I would take the gold. If wemake that 2500 exp, I take the exp as soon as possible

the point is, if I get much exp in a chest, then I choose the exp instead of the gold. But if I'm short on cash, I'll take the gold

You're always short on cash until you have built level 7 and castle week 1 or the highest you can, and buy all your army day1 week 2 and have 8 heroes and have built all your 2nd towns fully and have all those armies too as well as have bought every artifact from the artifacts merchant and paid all the trees for level ups and have enough gold to surrender your full army if you need to escape the other sides hero for the moment.

...what bjorneee tries to say : YOU NEVER HAVE ENOUGH MONEY!!

I hope some day even the dumpest newbie get that.

One big point is that the main need to pick up all those chests by himself, that would mean that u need almost a complete week to pick all those boxes only for the experience u can easily get on other occasions.

Gold is that much important & vital in the first couple of weeks.
That extra 2000 gold or 1000 can help you build what you need on week 1 & 2.
If theres still chest around later you can get exp if you have the income coming.

Speed is crucial & you need to execute your moves wisely.
Your main has many responsibilities & you can use more then one hero to clear areas.

For other maps with different makings, exp could very well be just as valuable as gold.

well, I think this statement is characteric for you. instead of describing a scenario for which your theory holds, you're just making vague assumptions.

but instead of complaining about your posting practice, I'll try a logical approach how such a scenario might look like:

to make experience from chests more valuable then gold, there would have to be
1) nothing interesting to buy (all dwellings disabled, no artifact merchants etc.) or
2) no way to gain experience other than from chests (no monsters or special locations like naga banks on the map)

I can't help myself, but personally I wouldn't want to play these kind of maps.

If others like to, I have no problem with it though (!)

Consis, I haven´t been rude to you anywhere in this thread and others, which in reverse could hardly be said to be the case, by the way. Your last post is so poor and full of self-righteous stereotyping though, that it almost caused me to make an exception here.

In this thread you can read many good, clear-cut and well-explained reasons from experienced players, for the fact that in the game of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, gold from chests is a good option and exp a very bad one, in general. Your suggestion that this is dependant on so-called specific "toh-maps" ignores all of these explanations, as well as the simple fact that the most frequently played ToH-map is the random map.

Great post Haile73!

You said what I was going to say. Instead of speaking of the promised map, or the map in the sky, give us some hard core map name proof where its better to take the exp.

I think Haile has almost proved logically here that there is probably no such map, and if there is - it is boring.

I agree that ToH mapmaking bias does affect the gameplay, but rather towards Might over Magic. Chest EXP-taking is still a n00by thing to do.

And here is a short theory on why they take the exp.
1. They play to have fun
2. They like their hero on a RPG level
3. So they care more about leveling their hero than winning the game.
4. They make themselves believe that taking exp "is good", so that they may indulge their Herobuilding fantasies without it feeling like a bad strategy.
5. But it is

GL & HF, and take the gooold!
