GENERALLY
If the choice is 2000 gold or 1500 exp
and 1500 gold or 1000 exp
I'll take the experience.
But if the choice is 1000 gold or 500 exp, I'll take the gold.
UNUSUAL
Maybe in some special situations like if I want to build an important building like Capitol, while I only have about 9000 gold, I'll take the gold of the chest coz if i didn't do it, I'll lose one day Capitol gold (2000 gold). Or If I want to build level 7 dwelling in day 7. If I take the experience, I can't build it and I'll lose 3 of level 7 creatures in the first day of next week.

It's all about discretion for me. If there's an immediate need or if I forsee myself needing gold in the near future, I will choose the gold. If my main's level is low, I may consider choosing the experience if there's currently enough gold in my treasury to work with. During those times, I'll place a higher priority on the experience if I'm close enough to level up. If gold is tight and my main's level is still rather low, I'll just take the gold and battle more creatures for my muscle.
Like Evil_Warrior, I think 500 experience is not convincing enough for me to take it in most situations. In that case, the 1000 gold is likely to be more valuable to me at the time. This is pertains especially to the early game, where obtaining gold is a part of everyone's priority.

There you go. This post by Xarfax pretty much sums it up:Quote: Ok, thats just my opinion (although i know all of the good players i know share it, and it developed over full 4+ years).
If you bring the complete H3-Strategy to a "makro-view" it all leads to a single point:
Hit points win the game.
...which should be expanded into..
Hard hit points win the game
That means, if youve more higher level creatures than your opponent, you will win the game 8 out of 10.
So when uve soo much money to spend 15000 bugs ore more, just to increase your main hero on average 4 level, you really have done something wrong in your game.
Lets see..u built all your buildings and bought all your creatures from that town ..well u did something wrong...you had enough money to built the second town ..if u had enough money, why not letting your opponent face two times level7 in the endight, while he has only one with him? Do you think those few secondary skills were really worth it?..No way.
An example:
I had once a very important clan fight against Defreni. We play Hourglass 2, which is a very rich map. He was lucky and got 2 castles, and i was lucky and had 2 towers. So we got this equal fight in the end, which i could win with 3 nagaqueens or something. He fleed and i offered a draw, cause this fight could turn into an endless game. But he said "noway i already build my 3 rampart town". Well what can i say, my ass was toast.
So you can never have enough money.
And if u really think about it. Everytime your main hero opens a treasure he lose 2 tile. Means if he needs 15000 experience for the next level up, he needs about 2 complete turns to do it! Well.. that would i call a waste of time and resources.
Peoples that stick with their weird experience theory, will never have a chance against a really skilled player.
Xarfax1
PS: Btw. Consis...who do you expect to answer to your question, who are your "top dogs"...and why do u think they would answer to such a stupid question??

The chests are back for HOMM5 so this question is still relevant. Here's a question: How much XP to you have to add to the chests before they become balanced?
2000
1500
1000

no I meant total.(fill in the blanks)
2000 gold=________
1500 gold=________
1000 gold=________
to make this more specific, you don't have your Capitol yet.
my own estimates:
2000=2750
1500=2250
1000=1750

take experience = you loose
take gold = you win
I put it into simple lines, so that peeps that still dont get it, it may get now.
But of course some peeps will never learn/improve.

On jebus I often pick xp if my main walks right by a chest. Normally I have enough gold and to be able to win tough fights like lvl 7 dwells and be fast (better chance of getting log or increasing log) its imo wise to take the xp.

95%+ of the time, I take gold out of chests too, however, I take experience sometimes out of chests as well (unless my build order gets hindered) if I want to get faster to an expert school of magic or exprt. tactics, log, alamar to expert scholar etc.
So lemme rephrase that.
You think, you win more.
You don't think, you lose more

In my last few games on Jebus I did't find myself swimming in gold even thought I've explored 100% of my area (well, sometimes the area just sucks). I'd rather pick all chests with scouts. My main will get tons of xp in the treasure area anyways.

ever since heroes 2 i always took cash. the maps were simply too difficult (especially on hard or expert difficulty) because you were so damn poor that you needed anything you could get.
you could xp from gazebos (which were pretty frequent in h2) anyway.
when first i first played h2 of course i took xp, but on harder difficulties and later levels in the campaign, i got creamed. so i learned my lesson
so when i played h3, i stuck with my old habits. its all about teh gold

Well it depends. If you are low on cash, and need it fast for some thing important (suck as a capitol or for a quick recruitment) take the cash. This is especialy relevant when playing on the higher difficulty levels. But if you have enough miney, or if you don't need much at the time, take the exp. In general exp. is harder to come by than money, so just take the exp.

Angel, delete this thread pls!
It is useless.I mean it's purpose was to show new players the RIGHT way.
I see here good advices from some hardcore players, advices followed by explanations to make it logical, explanations that make sense and that are correct.
Instead of reading, thinking and then maybe even trying theirselves this other way, people come here and throw in their 0.5 cent saying they only take exp no matter what, without any explanation or with saying Quote: I would take exp becaus i like getting levels and i dont need money co´s i got my style ..........
.
This thread has became uselles imho, because newcomers that will read this, will not have a clue which way is the right one. Looking here they will say "hmm, the opinions are split 50-50.So ill keep doing it my way, since there are so many others doing it."
