I agree with FC luck is a major part of heroes if the players are of the same skill level. Example of luck; Your oppenent gets Heavenly Helm as a random relic while u get boots of levitation aint he a lucky bastard

I can't tell you how many times I have played HourGlass 2 and recived just useless relics while my opponent recieved literaly all the +4 primary skills relics, and even got imlplosion to boot. I'm not sure if Vampire is trying to imply that simply skill determines winners in games or that he is poking fun at anybody who thinks luck doesn't decide games. I know for a fact I have lost enough games due to bad luck or good luck for my opponent

LUCK can be a huge part of a game.

on a totally balanced map not that much

but yes every game has it's degree of luck from what you get at random start, heroes you get in tavern, skills or spells you find, shoot anything set to random in the game is some degree of luck is it not?

play random maps, your telling me the most skilled player will win every time hmmmmmmm NO.

what a skilled player can do is turn bad luck into a win by simply making fewer or no mistakes

Luck is largely in the hands of the map designers. A map like me vs you, crimson & clover or battle for honor luck is almost nil.

Hourglass will always come down to luck of the draw w/guilds,utopia,town draw and what artifacts you get on the island.

Everyone pretty much knows the patterns on that map. Many maps are that way.

It is always fun to play a luck map when you are the one with all the luck :-)

Luck-based maps

This might be a little off-topic, but everybody seems to agree that some maps make game more luck-based than others (e.g. Hourglass=luck and Battle for Honor=no luck).

I'd like to throw my 2¢ in and say that although I kinda like BfH-style maps I am more inclined to play the luck-based ones...or else how could I beat a Colonel once in a while :-D , or be beaten by a cadet? >:-(

I understand many ToHp-guns don't like the idea of losing games to less-skilled players, but hey, where is the fun in playing a game where you know the outcome before it starts?

One might say, play only guys with a similar record, but this would deprive me from the pleasure of playing a bunch of friends (most of them more skilled than me, i might add ;-)) or meeting a lot of potentially good new friends.

My sincere respect goes for all you chess-players out there, but I usually play this game at night after a hard-working day, then most likely I won't have the patience to study maps and saved games as to develop that ultimate perfect strategy...The price to this approach is a lousy record, but what the hell I get more fun from it this way!

Any comments?

Im with ya there Troels

But sure luck decides alot of things, but thats why it keeps being funny, and the most skilled players are allmost never unlucky
(The meaning of that is, that they might say they are unlucky, but somehow u cant see it, while they whipe ur butt all the way to Greenland )

Luck vs Skill

Skill only comes on a map with few arts or no arts and roughly same amount of creatures and mage guilds are set for spells so luck can be taken out of the equation and then u will see some real skill.

Luck on the other hand is more fun , As was stated before a really bad player can beat a really good player with LOTS of luck and i mean the luck like assembling AA and he gets the great +2 to stats arts. Luck can go both ways on "luck" maps and its much more entertaining.

I personally prefer luckier maps but when i attempt to make maps(blah) i try to make set guilds and set artifacts so the bickering between players is minimal at the end of the game, but i also try to include some luck variables as well... like utopias heavely guarded power arts that u must work for ie 250 chaos hydra (most know that map tho and dont like it)

My favorite map right now is Hourglass 2 and 3 very luck based maps but easily overcome by not making mistakes if u get gipped on islands or utopia ... not both cus then ur really screwed...

Here is my 2 cents as people even care since ves decidided to change HOS . Luck rocks and will take u far but without some skill ur screwed take note i said some skill... if ur very lucky and very skilled i will ask u this do u know antal?

There is luck in almost everything.

-What heroes u get in tavern.

-What skills you get.
(I know different types of heroes have a better chance of getting certain skills, but there's skill a possibility of a barbarian not getting offence...although impossibly low that chance is.)

-What primary skills you get.

-Luck and Morale.
Im sure all of you have played and haven the enemy get absurd morale and luck, while you get none, when u have the same or higher morale and luck chance.

-Spells
(Not what spells you get in guild, but how they go.)
Although spells are very limited in luck area, I’ve been in a couple games where I need to chain lightning, but his troops and my troops were an equal distance from the starting point, or a point where it hits, and it goes for me.

relics

I pretty much put it this way, relics werent in homm2.  The ultimate artifact was a +12 item, and it was hard to find and rare.  These new relics are way too powerful, and so yes, luck plays a part if one gets a much better art than other.
So I prefer playing maps with no relics or dragon utopias, eg. The Last Battle.  Its difficult enough getting complete double digit stats on a hero.....

hmm what if all the artifacts are purchasable?

Will it decrease in any fun of this game?

I don't think so.

All the luck-based factors in this game is caused
by all the randomness and uncertainty.

In single play, luck- based game will do ok.

But in multiple with any human player. more brain- skill- based change will contribute on this game's
fun.

So i insist EVERY HERO / every spell / every artifacts / every 2ndary skills are open in market
by any player in proper price.
(of course, no other artifacts are acquisitive
in field for free.)

I like the idea of "COW" tourney . i am really hoping for Homm4 adopting this kind of game option.

BTW. I don't think open map is far more skill-based than closed is.  Cuz mage guild and hero 2ndary skill is all the luck.

i vote for mostly luck

well definitely this game is mostely luck....just think which items are all based on luck in this game:
gold in chests
ressources
which heroes do u get
which spells u find in ur guild
damage of creatures
luck
morale
which monsters u get in refugee
what kinda troops u have on bought heroes
weeks of plague or +5this double that
how many angels u get on a griffin conservatory
which arts are available on map and black market
how many monsters in all specials (dwarven treasury.....)
joiners or no joiners
does a medusa queen stone or not stone (same with other troops and specials)
which primary and secondary u get when ur hero advances

i could write and write nearly every part of this game depends on some "luck roll" of the computers "dice"...so its my opinion that at least half of this game is luck, the rest strategy.
