Because it just emphasizes Jon's character. You never realize how pathetic he is until he's the only one in the comic strip.

I don't think it's supposed to be laugh out loud funny, and I think you have to be a fan of Garfield in order to get the subtle comedy in it. Also, after a while they lose their impact, since they're all kind of similar.
