I tend to find that when automating a repetitive task, I go beyond the task itself and start to consider all sorts of further possibilities for the program with similar tasks.
E.g. I can easily make a program that can schedule my day for me based on the current elements that my day consists of, but if the program is expanded for any number and type of elements, it is much more generally applicable, but on the other hand, it requires also much more work.
I think the optimal solution is usually to only automate to the need right now, and then use this this automation to grant extra time which will allow for further work on better and more general automation, if that's the path one wishes to go.
