The Serious Donation Thread (and other serious suggestions)

The storm is over, the thunder has silenced and a couple of shipwrecks lie around on the shore. Sun is not exactly shinning, but the birds sing nonetheless. Its repair time, or at least time to plan. And I say, we better go back to an important issue that was left behind.

First of all, my motivations: I pledge I have no interest staining no ones reputation, hurting any feelings or questioning other peoples honor. I do not want to cause confusion, embarassment nor offending others. My single motivation is a selfish one, though. I want ToH to keep going strong, I want our tournament to shine like gold and the players to enjoy the game at its maximum, independent of what Ubi throws at us.

I brought the idea of starting a donation program on the other thread. My proposal landed in the middle of the crossfire and didnt cause quite the enthusiasm I expected it to cause. Now, after the tidAL wave is gone, I decided to give it a last shot, and I apologise for those who genuinely were'nt enthusiastical about my proposal in first place, and had to read this post this far.

For those who want to hear it once more, here goes a small story.

I am brazilian, born in Rio de Janeiro. My beloved Rio has places were life quality is the very same as in Switzerland, and others comparable only to the sub-saharian african countries. But soccer, as you guys heard thousand times before, is everyones favorite game, independent of social class. Even in the very poor layers (I do mean really poor people), they manage to set up beautiful and organized soccer tournaments. The tough part is the trophy... they all give a small bit of cash for a couple of weeks and someone brings those countless coins to the sports shop, where you can purchase those cheap gigantic plastic golden trophies at relatively modest prizes.

I brought donations into focus. Ves claimed he didnt need donations. I take his word for it. Actually, none of us needs donations! Anyone who has computers and dedicate that much time to ToH, doesnt count on salvation army for soup, im very sure. And that was surely not what I meant by donation.

The pleasure of the trophy, to my fellow brazilians is not the value of the thing itself, but the very idea that they are a part of that very trophy, of that championship. It wouldnt have nearly the same effect if that trophy would have been payed by the rich politician who wants to get elected for mayor.

So, the very existence of ToH is wonderful, the idea is great, and Vesuvius is behind it all. Supplying us with a place to have plenty of fun at no cost. I want to support that idea! I want very badly to support this idea. Not because Vesuvius needs the money, but because I need to give that money to ToH, I feel the urge to strenghten that Idea.

I know you guys have been managing this tournament for a decade now. And change is a f***** tough process, specially when you got things going smooth as they are for several years. But making the players a part of this process would bring us into a more intimate contact to the spirit of ToH. And that by means of anonym donations that wouldnt embarass the players who choose not to donate. There would be no social obligation of paying whatsoever!

Therefore, a clean and decent process.

What do you guys think?

yours sincerely,
Wolfsburg

Hi Wolfsburg, I appreciate the idea, but donations aren't necessary.  I've said a lot in some of these drama discussions, that the biggest value ToH has is its longevity, its history.

Just like when we play a single player game and finish it, getting some sort of high score or medal/award, its the same for ToH -- getting icons, medals, and graphical awards that represent your standings in rankings, history, and hall of fame.

What makes it great, is that for the years that go by, these medals stay in your record, and others can see where you stand, even if you aren't playing anymore.  Or simply come back and take up your record and play in another generation of heroes.  Some players like Vex have been in all three generations (H3,H4,H5) and I think its nice to see that this community is there for you whenever you feel like taking the challenge.

SUPPORT VS. DONATE

do you imply to send money to vesuvius?

All of us playing, chatting in forums, helping new players, making new maps, being here in general.. thats all support a community needs. Things would be much more alive and jerky with a gamespy/zone style lobby, but thats an old story, we' re over it..

for myself, TOH medal awards are the best ever. I wouldn't give my wyvern or these medals for 1000 bucks prize (), if I have to choose
History also say a lot about a player, and is priceless.
But who knows about this new generations?...

I mean opening a bank account where we can deposit the donations in order to have a fund for the prizes. This would remove Vesuvius'es responsability to finance it all, thus making the players more keen to accept their prizes and preventing further debates on Ves's finances.

... or to pay a programmer to arrange the whole lobby deal.
... among others

But apparently big boss was not very excited about the idea.

And please dont get me as a materialistic fella, if there is an adjective that doenst define me at all, is that one.

The initial post is very well presented Perhaps, if you continue with eloquence this idea might roll... Yet, I doubt if Ves will change his decision.

As you can imagine, the idea is very bad...not your intentions though.
You'll see then many multiplied "cases" like the one we just assisted. And even worst... Again, imagine wolf, if we disagree on H/R issue, what will be if we'll do it for money...?

You can do what you feel is right as an individual.
For me, money has gotten worst for me so I cant afford a com for awhile.
I am simply too poor.
I would love the game enough to play it anywhere.

It should be a choice.
If I could do anything but i just cant afford to send out any money right now.

Perfectly agree with this.

Absolutely agree with Wolfsburg. Lets do it, it is simple.

Ves, being in the TOH records years ago is important for old player. But if you are new one - it means nothing for you..

Hi folks!

I appreciate those who cared to discuss my idea. Thanks for the support and attention. I believe discussion itself is a very contributing process, sometimes even more than game reports. And I believe that renewal can bring some life back in old concepts. Thats why I started confabulating this whole deal in first place. But I recognize when tendencies wont take off. And thats the case.

Well, this was a suggestion, an idea. Some of you think it is not a positive one either, thus disagreeing, some dont actually think much about it, therefore not caring if it will ever come to be, and some believe big boss will simply not change things. Which I think... is not a very productive attitude.

Exactly because I oppose that attitude, I created a thread for this discussion to find place. I have other suggestions too, good ones, or at least, worthy of discussion. But in order to adress them, it is pivotal to have your support. When the community gathers around a matter and comes up with a solution, it is much more likely that the leaders will embrace that idea. Specially when, like in this case, we have an open dialog with the boss.

This brings me to my second suggestion:

After observing our community for a while I have noticed that our tournament is totally based on a single verb. REPORTING.
This was the very concept that seduced me in first place about ToH. That the results and scores were not coldly calculated by a machine, but an active process of honor and fair play. Specially because there is a button called report loss, that grants you the the unique chance to feel NICE and HONORED about losing. Just by beeing a legit and decent player, with high honor standarts. (Plus granting players honor points on their behaviour).

Thats a BRILLIANT IDEA.

Reporting means, taking the responsability away from an external source, and bringing it to the players. I cannot even start to concieve something more mature and democratic then that.

But I got overexcited about reporting. I felt REPORTING should be not only for game results. But for other situations. And the fist that came to my mind was brought before in HC a short while ago, and I feel the urge to bring it to discussion again.

Report tutoring button.

If someone with many games and experience decides to spend their precious time to give the newbies some guidance, that is an honorific act. That should be praised more than games reported and win-loss ratio. The welcoming of new players is the very thing that determines wether the next clan-tournament will have 20 or 100 players. The first impression remains.

If it wasn't for Elvin and Vangelis, who granted me detailed explanations and some precious hints, I would have been gone a long time ago.

THAT is attitude. That should be rewarded. I wanted very badly a small button to click on, called Report tutoring.

Where, very similar to win-loss reporting, a window would open up, I would right down my account name, the account name of the "tutor", the amount of time used for "teaching purposes", and a rating system between 1 and 5 stars for me to vote how honorable was his teaching.

Lets say, a player who gathers 10 stars in quality-rating or 5 hours of tutoring gets one prestige point. Or something similar. Thus making the more experienced players more eager to help the newcomers and FEEL GOOD about it.

What do you guys think?

W.

(Some weeks later)
No one commenting on the last idea? Big-boss?

Any kind of opinion about it is very welcome... (after almost three weeks without a single reply, even merciless bashing will be warmly welcomed)

Edit: And since Im being intrusive already, I found the perfect roman-style picture for our report tutoring button.

Wolfsburg: If you want to learn just play with good oponents. You can see how they play and try same tactics in future. Here no FREE leasons... special not from me . If you want to learn need to pay

You can learn from every game if you do ANALYSIS after it. Just dont worry for result in begining.
