The Suffering
Oddly enough, the game The Suffering is being offered as freeware by Atomicgamer. I don't know about you guys, but I'm a sucker for free games. Kinda makes the fact I bought it for the Xbox years ago a moot point but what can you do?

Midway now freely offers the PC edition of The Suffering, Surreal Software's survival/horror game set in a penitentiary that is currently being adapted into a feature film. A very great game IMO...
The Suffering was one of the great games that I played, not that I played many, but it's a good combination of action/horror/nightmare. Torque is such a badass, I love it when I can transform in that beast and beat out everyone (of course that's only in his head, in reality he gets so angry that he beats everyone with his bare hands   ). Then there's the flashbacks that might freak you out (not me but I know there are more soft players out there) and an atmosphere that resembles more a nightmare than a cheap horror one.
I received this game when I bought a magazine (LEVEL in Romania). The story is kinda ok, not spectacular but good for a horror game (at least it's not the old crappy "We opened the portal to another dimension or some experiment went wrong, and now there are monsters among us!" Doom style or Half-Life style story).
When I got more proficient I started to beat the **** out of everyone with the shiv (knife), and yes it really worked -- I started to avoid their attacks, sneak out, attack when I wouldn't get hurt by their hits, etc... Not only was it fun to take them out with the shiv but it also required concentration which was good IMO. It was like an action movie where the protagonist beats the **** out of the monsters with his moves (like in Pitch Black  ).
I also like how you had 3 different endings (good/neutral/evil) depending on what you've done over the course of the game.
The Sequel is very good as well: The Suffering - Ties that Bind.
Although the game is somewhat short it is nevertheless kinda good, IMO. Not that I played many games but personally it was entertaining.

I never beat the first one and didn't play the second, but I can't turn down a game with such a freaky atmosphere. Makes me long to play System Shock 2 again...

Hmm and I thought it was too easy even on maximum difficulty (it wasn't that easy but I still was able to beat most of them with the shiv, difficult though). The second one is a bit harder on the max difficulty, you run out of health very quickly, so you have to be very concentrated and avoid the attacks.
The "monster" in which you transform is uber powerful if you use it to smash enemies, he gets "experience" points and at a certain level (i think 5) you have a very powerful ability when you jump -- you virtually knock down everyone around you, and you can jump again, and you kill mostly everything with two jumps at level 5. If that's not enough, you jump the third time -- remember they're knocked down so
That's insanely powerful, too bad you run out of "insanity energy" too quickly.

I love you man I had been looking forward to play this one for a while but I never got to it. I have seen part of the first game and it seemed pretty interesting plus I like third person shooters.

That had me worried. I wonder if they'll turn Torque into a gentically engineered woman and then make 2 crappy sequals.

Uhh ok I knew the game but was it so popular that they'd get it into a movie? Then again there are already so many crappy horror movies around, one more can't hurt

Now this sucks I reached Hargrave(guy who went nuts and kills prisoners for fun) and when I defeat him there is one of his guards that remains invincible. Shiv or other weapons simply cannot stop him and he keeps running around shooting me. Any ideas what's wrong?

Nothing like that. Will try to kill his officers first and if that doesn't work patch the game. This doesn't corrupt your saves does it

I'm sorry you had to encounter this bug.
I had some bugs when I played it (not the first time though) and I had to reload from the last "area" (the loading screen stuff).
I hope you have a save -- I usually save periodically.

Did not work either, will try from my last checkpoint..
Edit: So I start the game from the beginning and when I get to chapter 4 it gets stuck in the loading screen. Twice. I'm through with this freaking game
