The whole case is about people wanting others to caress their ears with soothing words. Please. You don't need an award for being good nor an official indication that you are doing fine, just be yourself and have a positive outlook.

No you are wrong.

The most destructive is impassivity for human. From the very begining we need incentive and in all our life we are getting mad if nobody cares about what we are doing so we try to make their attention and impresion good or bad just to be noticed.

Just try feel what some newbies are feeling. How you would feel when you post an 20-30 reply/post without any response of any member but of course "you don't need an award for being good nor an official indication that you are doing fine", but it may give the feeling like those post never exist. But nah, no nobody would say to you that you do something wrong either. so you get mad and then thing can happen..

And it is not for soothing words but just words good or bad, so you feel that you are noticed. Not an uninvited guest that nobody cares about what it is doing or tring to do.

Thinking that all members know all the time that the are doing fine or not is an wishful thinking.(it is too big assumption)

But it is only mine opinion
So who cares ....

And think about it. Celfious initially wanted to leave because he thought he was blackballed. But he wasn't. If my suggestion were implemented, then he'd have had a few stars (or whatever they might be) for his posts, and wouldn't feel that he is unappreciated.

I think he felt that he wasn't a part of things and that nobody took any notice of his posts. How exactly would your idea help? Not all thread ideas or posts are going to be noticed or be popular, and as you have seen, he came back because the community finally noticed him and didn't want him to leave. This whole just wouldn't be good if it might only benefit a few people. It would just be unnecessary coding.

You got me wrong there, if people did not care we wouldn't have a community. What I'm saying is that you will interact with people and hear opinions, you can't not know if you are doing well or not. Positive effort will be rewarded as it should so what more would you like? An extra distinction that you did your homework and are a good boy? Positive contribution and attitude does not go unnoticed and you don't need stars to show it.

And lol mvass

But there are numerous posts that you may read and think "that pwns!" but don't reply to and tell the author that their post is awesome. Celfious clearly felt discouraged because he thought that everyone disliked him, and that's why they didn't want to discuss anything with him, when, in reality, most just didn't discuss with him because they had nothing to say on the subject. A system like I am advocating would tell members that their posts are being read and appreciated without actually pointing those posts out.

Come on. You're not serious are you? If a person replies to a subject then that means they have something to say about the subject and that they have read it. If no one replies then that means they have nothing to say but they may have read the post. Not every thread is going to have replies in it, and that's just the way forums work. If you want to say their post is good but think that posting in the thread might be a bit worthless since you wouldn't have much to say, then just HCM the person.

I have an awesome thread that nobody posts at! I feel so much better

I've started threads that were not popular and no I didn't like the lack of attention. Big deal, it either means that the idea is not good in which case you try something better next time or that you are referring to the wrong audience. Let's face it, not all ideas are welcome or interesting to the average reader. Yes it sucks but do you want a candy for compensation or something? For me the thread that will get ONE thoughtful reply that shows at least one person read and appreciated what I wrote is a lot more satisfying than one that gets many 'great thread ' replies. I suppose it depends on what you are looking for and what the purpose of the thread was.

That grew fast!

Anyway, some comments:

Orange star system:
I don't think that orange stars should be added. They are too much like the red stars. I know that there are many good posters that are always active and helpful, but never have that one post you can stick a QP on. I remember that once there was such thing as a QP for overall contribution. I have stopped noticing new QPs a long time ago, so I'm not sure whether this still exists, but I think it does rendering the whole orange star system... not needed.

Incentive for newbies:
Another thing that was quite common was the "newbie QP". That is a QP given to a relatively new member for a post that is very good, but not quite QP material (I have no way of finding out for sure, but I feel my first QP was exactly that). That is used only for the first QP to encourage the member to make more great posts like that or even better ones. Once again, I don't know if it is still practised, but it is a good idea IMO.

HUGE posts:
I can't stand those things. I could never ever create such a monstrosity, especially not merely to get a shiny. And yet I still have 7 QPs. So if you think enormous posts are the only way to earn a QP, check my profile and you'll see that most my QPs are granted for overall thread contribution.

20 post limit:
Annoying, I know. I've had to deal with the same problem some time ago. I did have this nagging voice in my head that warned to me check my profile once in a while and make sure I still have about 3 posts left in case I need them for something serious. However, all that really did is stopped me from posting silly one-liners whose place is mostly in the VW. And since the post limit is not valid in the Wastelands I see no reason why the 20 post limit should be harmful in any way.

Peanut Planter's HQ:
Quote:
Something like underground organisation, community project without the support of the mods

I got a QP for it.
And one of the Peanut Planters is a mod.
And I will run the place the way I see fit, so don't expect me to allow this to be integrated into HC's system.

You HAVE made long posts in the past ... like this one. And it was rather QP worthy, really, maybe I should award you one now that I have the option.

I just showed you what a really huge post looks like
