I remember one with two gorillas that tried to hit each other with explosive bananas Was very fun, each had one shot at the time and you had to set the speed and angle of your throw.

On a more serious note I think the original rayman was designed for dos right?

Time for a little update

Again, a PS2 game this time. Sorry guys, older games will follow soon

[FINAL FANTASY X-2]

So, you already know how much I enjoy Final Fantasy X. Maybe not a perfect game, definitively full of plot holes. But I still love it, damnit.

So, naturally, I was rather overjoyed when SE announced a sequel. Yes, first time in FF history, a sequel to previous installment. Since FFX was so good, I obviously had high hopes. Even though FFX ending seemed rather definitive, there was still much to be done. And I like Tidus myself, so a chance to get him back was something I really wanted to see.

SPOILERS AHEAD, in case you care, ofc.

The idea was rather nifty. To have Yuna search for her lost love. One of the best parts of FFX was the irony - the player was told all the game that Yuna will die after defeating Sin, and it turned out that it was Tidus who died in the end. Not died - worse - vanished into thin air. I didn't like that dream stuff thingy, over-clichéd if you ask me, and full of plot holes, but the effect was fine. Tidus was gone.

I like angst

So, I naturally expected to see some more angst. After all, Yuna seemed so helplessly in love with him. More grief, yay!

Well, that's what I thought. I retained the hope after seeing the menu - or rather, the menu music, which was kinda classy. My hopes, however, got RUINED the very second I pressed "new game".

My eyes bled. What on EARTH was they thinking by making a POP CONCERT an intro? The song was AWFUL, but what's worse, it seemed like POWER PUFF GIRLS. YRP, in position.. yeah, you tell em, Bubbles.. <faints> Jesus on a pogo stick.. (credits to Jeanne and her incredible game recaps for that one. I love you Jeanne Read her recaps if you have time, they are really funny).

Ok, so I'm sitting there watching this horrid show, and thinking, can it get any worse. Sure it can. First battle: we fight against Yuna (of course not the real her, just some dumb impostor that looks like her), and she uses a move "Ecstasy" that makes her groan and moan as she heals her goons. Ugh. I didn't want to see that..

From there, it's a downright spiral, to the rock botton of crap, where FFX-2 belongs.

First of all, the classic turn system is gone, replaced by real-time ATB bar. That means serious button mashing. We have only three characters this time, and, since they are already developed (except Paine, but she's a rather shallow character), there is NO character development at all. The characters perform jobs using the horrific dress-your-Barbie-doll garment grid system, deliberately developed so fanboys may wank a bit more in front of their TVs or PCs. Cuz ya know, special dress spheres we can acquire make them naked for a moment. Oh wow. Geeee, I'm too old for this kind of crap. >_>

Well, back to the system. While it's not bad by design, it's bad because of balance. Cause, most of special skills take a lot of time to charge, and are a) unreliable b) not much better than a classic melee attack by a powerful melee dress sphere, like Berserker. So while it seems fun for a moment, you quickly discover that the best way to play this game is to use two strong melee attackers, and one healer. The healer (preferably an alchemist, since she never runs out of healing stuff) throws Mega potions all the time, and the berserkers or dark knights just keep attacking, using darkness or mad rush occasionally on groups/tougher foes/bosses. Yeah, that's all.

In other words, it's a bit screwed up.

The game isn't difficult, too. Except the ridiculous queen coerl battle, which casts instant death every two moves on one of your girls and has way too much HP, (needed if you want to get the alchemist sphere ASAP), it's easy as pie. You almost can't die, because the alchemist fully recovers all chars every several seconds, and the bosses don't have much HP. With a couple steroid items, you just crush them, rape them with ~9999 damage of berserker's Mad Rush that nearly never misses, despite the info that states it "often misses". It's a bull.

Ok, there are strategy guides, many possibilites and so on, you can check gamefaqs and see for yourself. The problem is, you don't need those. All you need is to mash the normal attack with your supercharged chars and toss mega potions with alchemist, unless you fight against the hidden super-bosses. But even the bosses are lame, in this game. Unlike the previous installments, where you could fight all those cool weapons, you get to fight some wuss called Trema, which is barely a challenge. yeah. Cool. Christ on a trampoline.

And there are no limit breaks. Yeah, you heard me. NO LIMIT BREAKS. The most cool factor of FF battles is gone, replaced by, what.. special dress spheres, which are a) pain to activate b) not that strong at all c) SHOW THE GIRL NAKED FOR A SECOND OMGZ!!!!!!!11!!1111!!oneone. (of course, with all "strategic spots" blurred and indistinct, an effect you'd gain while wearing a latex tight costume, just with the color of your skin. Gee.)

No Limit breakes, super simple combat, nearly no need for strategy at all. Fun, isn't it?

... not.

But we haven't cover the biggest flaw yet.

The atmosphere.

God, it's AWFUL.

FFX was a tragic story, and everything was made to feel SAD. It's disputable whether they succeeded or not, but a sequel to such game shouldn't be pink fluffy POP story, for Christ's sake! This is blasphemy. It's like making a horror to succeed it with a Teletubbies show as part 2. It just doesn't feel right. It doesn't feel right that Yuna lost half of her IQ, it doesn't feel right that Rikku is now an annoying snow. It doesn't feel right that the music is no longer Uematsu's, and it doesn't feel right that it's some random crap like in 99% of other games, too. (Except for 1000words maybe, Besaid theme and Eternity/Memory of lightwaves, those are the only ones that seem not out of place). It doesn't seem right that after a tragic death of her lover, Yuna is all acting all powerpuff/brainless, and seems retarded at times. What were they thinking? So this is meant to be a SEQUEL? God.

Kill me.

To sum up, even though I enjoyed combat for a while, until I discovered "the I win button" aka press attack and toss mega potion, and even though I was curious about the ending, I felt horribly disappointed. It's a first FF game that I would call a FAILURE. It SUCKS. The magic is GONE, it feels completely different, so different than you can do 100 other things more productive and interesting than playing this piece of ****.

Be damned square-enix for making it THAT bad. >.>

yeah, and you could switch it in FFVII and FFVIII too, if I recall correctly. Still, the FFX-2 version was annoying, mainly because skills took some time to charge.

And Rikku wasn't that bad in original FFX. However, in X-2, she was downright pathetic.

@Doomforge

Looks like I was not wrong. I had not seen this thread. Makes me wonder now what your reviews would have read like over the releases of the entire HoMM series if you had been on staff at some gamer-mag.
<IMO> your "balance" thread is a good off-shoot of this one.

Reviewing would be way too much work for me. Even then, I would not be good at it. I just want to escape a while and work at it, as little as possible.

I'll take a read. Some folks are born with the gift of an eye for detail. The life-quest becomes a mixture of; in what way is mine best suited and what do I like to do best?

What do you think about this?

Doom and Adrius hook up as a Review-Duo "like all esle is these days". Doom does the critical thinking, "nutz and boltz" and Adrius writes his colorful gameplay side of the review. The red-faced guy wrote a blow-by-blow ending with nukes, that turned me red too after laughing so much.

@Markkur: I haven't played Elemental either. :/

However, from what I've been reading from the official forums, it still has a long way to go before it's the true spiritual sequel to Master of Magic (especially since the magic component in Elemental is still pretty meh.).

I'm virtually duty-bound to pick up a copy of the game eventually though...MoM is one of my favorite games of all time, and ANY game that calls itself a successor must be tested...diligently.

As for your question about the life-quest, it's actually something I haven't really thought about much. I've always enjoyed writing, even when I was a kid, and actually got scolded a lot by teachers while growing up for my overly mature short story plots (writing about a hero's death in the fourth grade, for example).

I blame my overactive imagination. So, I suppose, what I was born to do was write.

@DF: Yeah, do a Fallout 2 review!
