Three Way System

The good reactions my faction system in 'After the Earthquake' got reminded me of an older system by me in which all factions also splitted into three possible ways. It's more restricted however because it does not allow to mix two ways. It's much more linear. There are six base factions with three later upgradeable base creatures and six base hero classes associated with it. Each faction can be developed later in one of three alternatives with their own associated hero classes in which the base heros can develop. Each 'prestige class' will give some specific bonuses. I hope I've explained it good enough. If not, please ask.

At least I have your attention.

Maybe you thought of a threeway between a human, a lion and a bat creating a manticore.

I agree... very nice ideia! but I have 4 points...
- in all creatures, i dont like only one: i dont like the tax colloector very much... for me, dont make many sense a general recruit tax collectors to fight in he's army: tax collector are trained to steal collect the taxes, not to fight.
- and... what is a spore twine?! - i m not native english speaker, and my english ir very poor... - can you explain me?
- Why we dont have a carnivore plant in the grove? (or the spore twine is a type of carnivore plant?)
- how do the astral body striks? do they use some weapon? or they strikes with magical strikes...?

I think its a good idea, if there would be something like this - for every faction.

P.S I think that cavalry should have impale (since they are more often or not going to use spears) and that champions should have joust, since well- they are the champions.

I agree that the creature lineups are not perfect by all means, just a sample. Creatures and abilities can surely be adjusted at any time.

@ tax collector: Does anybody have a better idea for a unit that gives 2 Gold instead of just 1?

@ spore twine: Do you or did you play HoMM4? It's kind of a waspwort. A twine that shoots spores. I don't like carnivore plants that much, so there isn't one. But that doesn't mean that there can't be one. It could fit.

@ astral body: I thought of magical strikes.

@ cavalry/champion: What you like. What you think is fitting better.

I think this system is quite intriguing - I like the way that the factions are grouped 3 by 3, not only in themes and/or races, but also by sharing an actual basis in the units. One of the things I wondered about was an upgrade system - I can see that the basic units (level 1 through 3) can be upgraded into an advanced unit depending on which branch you choose. I take it that the choice will be locked for all units once you pick your branch - so that you can't pick one upgrade from one theme and the other from another?

And what about upgrades of the higher level units - would there be any upgrades of these? And at what point in the game would you choose which branch to develop by?

That's locked indeed. It's quite a linear system. You have one choice but otherwise all is given.

Upgrades are surely possible. If fans wish upgrades then why not. I can live equally good without upgrades.

Quote:

Obviously before tier 4.

But I would think overall end of week 1, start of week 2 would sound like a good point.

My favorite HoMM VI idea so far, except for the compound. Orcs and swamps don't go hand in hand in my mind. Maybe have a new swamp base faction and replace Compound with something along the lines of...

1.2. Goblin blowgunner
2.2. Boa
3.2. Orc Crossbowman
4. Scorpion
5. Nomad
6. Pyromaniac
7. Behemoth

...of course you don't have to listen to me, this is your idea.

And while I like the system I feel like it could be too scattered.  However, if implemented properly then it would be brilliant.
