Unlockable content works for some genres - fighting, for example - but it wouldn't really work for any strategy games.

To elaborate, I believe that unlockable content would compose of:

-Higher Tier Units and extra Neutrals on maps

-More powerful artifacts

-Bonus Heroes

-Alternative Unit Textures

-Spells that are more powerful than normal spells

-Unique buildings that add to the flavor of the town, i.e. an Training focused racial building for Haven or Dark Energy chamber for Necropolis.

As for the detraction from the general gameplay, it is my opinion that in no way will the game be penalized for the hidden content. Take it in this light; A mod adds a certain new idea to the game, an extra addition of sorts. Unlockable features will perform a similar function so as to add an additional flavor to the game. Such a system will give the game an equally seasoning flavor to veterans so as to distinguish them from the lesser players. In a AoEIII-esque sort of way, the unlockables can be chosen out of many, but the entire game as a whole will remain the same adventerous setup like before. The addition of special features that require a certain aptness in completing conditions adds significantly to the gameplay, as the player is encouraged to seek out extra paths to enable better features that would normally imbalance Heroes. This system would ensure that higher level players get more fill out of a battle, and that lower players have an incentive to work towards similar goals.

I'm sorry, but I just plain disagree. For example, I don't care much about playing campaigns - the storyline doesn't interest me, the maps are often poorly made, game AI sucks, and I could come with numerous other reasons. I played most of the campaigns in original Heroes 5, I never bothered playing campaigns in HoF or TotE. That's the liberty I have as a player - I prefer to play single missions, so that's what I do.

Now why then I should I have a more limited gaming experience than somebody who prefers to play campaigns and therefore unlock these features? It may be something as trivial as stronger neutrals or better artifacts, but why should I be stuck with the same old plain artifacts or creatures just because I have another preference than the man next door? Seems neither sensible of fair to me.

Of course, unlocking certain maps like in a campaign is fine, that's part of the storyline. If I really want to play those maps, after all, I would play the campaign. There can also be certain creatures or artifacts or heroes that are featured in the campaign that doesn't appear elsewhere, and that's also fine - as long as I still have the option to use them in custom made maps etc.

Completely agree with Alc.

Also, if you make unlockable content too hard to get (such as finishing the campaigns multiple times on heroic), or too much to unlock, you'll get more 'powergamer fanatics' into this game - the same disease the MMOs have

For me the idea is ok,not great, but ok.
I think it can be correct to unlock unique things that the others can't have.

And as for bunuses you recieve for completing campaings in Heroic difficulty is nothing special for me,and I have to agree with Alc an Ashie-too much campaing replaying can "destroy" all of unlockable bonuses

And another thing: I played some games (not strategy) which had unlockable things, and I see there are some 20-25 things to unlock.
In Heroes 6 as Sith's idea will be only 5-8 one like these.
And that 5-8 one must be different bonuses, not just like as you defeat 50 wizards you will get a tier 8 Academy creature,if you defeat 50 necros you will get a tier 8 Undead creature etc.

I shall not admit defeat :)

Not all the features (if any) will be oriented to the campaign. Most if not all, will actually be hidden within the single player games or as a universal requirement. In fact, the Point Allocation system will take that handy little scoreboard and extend it to individual scenarios and give you universal point to "buy" certain upgrades to be used in any scenario.

I personally like the Point Allocation System. You get points to buy certain upgrades. Then the unlockables will be in a tier system, as you have to buy a requisite upgrade to unlock a higher bonus.

I still don't buy it, but then, we don't have to agree. Btw. such a thing seems to me more suitable for linear games, i.e. games where you start, play through a storyline, and then reach an ending, at which point you could put the game on the shelf. Contents like this would make replaying the game worthwhile.

Games that have high base replay value have cheats that unlock extra units. AoE III, a game where the gameplay's in the freestyle games, implements the "home city" style. I suggest that something like "Chambers of Asha" allows the unlocking of various faction-specific upgrades. I believe it will significantly add to the game by giving it a specific constant that can be adapted to the gameplay style.

I like that Home City feature in AoE 3,but I think it won't be good in Heroes.

Because there you can send a "shipment" in 1 minute (or more). But Heroes is a TBS game, not a RTS one,and the possible idea about a "shipment" which can arrive at Chambers of Asha in a specific number of turns isn't good

And what type of creatures you think can be there, because other things in Heroes style can't be...

Anyway,it won't be nice to copy a other's game feature,to steal other's work

I'm not suggesting that Heroes copy the Aoe III at all. I just used that game to prove that unlockables do work in strategy as counterpoint to mvassilev's suggestion.

In the way of how I suggest the unlockables work is.

1) They are omnipresent: that they will be active from purchase.

2) Thet they can be switched on or off and only a number of them can be active at one time.

3) That there must be a structure to the upgrades, that some must have prerequisites and some can be single.

4) Creature upgrades will be initiated from a new tab on the town interface - "The Transient Gateway". In such a manner, an uber upgrade from basic creature to special creature can only take place through the Gateway and that the normal flow of creatures is not interrupted.

5) The amount of special stand alone creatures work linearly with the weeks of the game. In Lamen's terms, weekly growth.

6) Artifacts and spells that are unlocked exist only in the Gateway. Artifacts can be picked up there and spells are learned as if they are in the Magic Guilds.

7) More universal upgrades, such as new buildings will exist in new tab atop the build screen. They have prices and a set building in the town.

Any other questions.

Sucks big time, this would FORCE me to play trough the campaign again and again.
And it would unbalance the game to hell.
Image me playing online and not have done campaign aka everybody i play against got a tier8 while i got tier 7.

@diablo - Please use less offensive words next time. "sucks" is not a good way to keep me calm. And please read more posts than just one, because you missed the part where I elaborated that the campaign is not the way you unlock them. Thank you.

"Sucks" is perfectly reasonable, and like I said on page 1, this idea does suck in a game such as this.

How much time will be until people upload "configs" on the net to unlock all features? Why do you think they do it? Because they are annoyed. That's why they want to download such configs, and they hope that it is available.

That's how it is. It annoys people. It's like buying an original game, waiting 50 minutes for it to scan the DVD to see if it's "original", compared to a cracked version that doesn't have that, and then wondering why people who bought the game legally WANT the crack.

............ Campaings was mentioned because its the general unlock way, but the the problem here is that somebody would end up with WAAAYYYYY better someting and people would desperatly start looking for hacks becaue otherwise they would be officially more than screwd over.
