WotLK Release! - Story Recap

So finally WoWs second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King has been released. Its expected to be the/one of the fastest selling game of all time - all my friends already have and I will do buy it on saturday.

But what was the story in the classic World of Warcraft and the Burning Crusade? Here is a summary of it which I wrote, and I think its really good.

World of Warcraft
Five years has past since the mortal races banded together at Mount Hyjal to vanquish the demonic army known as the Burning Legion from the world of Azeroth.
The World Tree Noldrassil was saved, but heavly damaged and the last guardian Medivh returned to the legends of the past aka he returned to death and his rest.

But then, about a year further in time, the Kul Tiran admiral Daelin Proudmoore attacked the Horde and the Cycle of Hatred begun.
The Alliance had ruined all the time that the orc Warchief Thrall and the human archmage and leader Jaina Proudmoore (his daugther) had spent to eradicate the old hatred between the Orcs and the Humans.

Eventully, Daelin was defeated and a order was restored. However, it was only a pact and the conflict would soon start again...

The New World Tree & Healing the Land

After the Third War, much of the ancient and now mortal Night Elves old land had been destroyed. In order to get a new homeland, while their old lands were restored, and to get their immortality back a group of druids led by Archdruid Fandral Staghelm, a veteran of the War of the Shifting Sands thousands of years back in time, asked the Grove of the Ancients for permission to create a new world tree on the isle of Kalidar.

The Grove of the Ancients allowed them to these but once Archruid Malfurion Stormrage returned from a visit in the Emerald Dream, he denied Staghelm and his Druids from creating a new world tree saying that the Dragons would never accept such selfishness and greed and thus they would not grant their blessing to the new world tree.
However after Malfurion returned to the Emerald Dream, and disappaered in there, the Druids led by Staghelm renewed their efforts in creating a New World tree.
Tyrande didnt protest as druidism was not her subject and the Night Elves needed a expansive new homeland.

The Druids grew a new world tree on the island of Kalidar, located in the sea beyond the northwestern side of Kalimdor.
They named it Teldrassil meaning Crown of the Earth and the tree was successful.
Within a short amount of time, the Night Elves (aswell as several other creatures like Harpies, Boars and Furbolg) moved to their new home. The Night Elves built the peaceful and silent city of Darnassus and everything seemed right, but it was not.

Shortly after everybody had moved in to the huge trees crown, corruption begun to spread in the wildlife.
Having been denied the Dragons blessing on the tree, Teldrassil failed and at a rapid rate became corrupted.
The Furbolg became mad and they even took the village of Starbreeze away from the corruption.
Demonic beigns like Satyrs and Sprites entered the realm and the animals became savage and more agressive.

To this day, the Night Elves fights against the mysterious fastpaced corruption and it seems like they are losing... atleast untill Malfurion is able to come back from the Emerald Dream.

However not only in Teldrassil things were wrong, the Sentinels and the drudiic orginastion known as the Cenarion Circle had begun to retake their battleraged lands and healing the land.

The region of Felwood had been the most tainted area of all, beign the main site of the demons operations.
Infernals had fallen down from the sky and spread fel into the water and rivers. The Fel energies corrupted the land and gave the region its current name.

The waterfalls comming from Felwood bringed the corrupted water into the neighbooring region of Darkshore (which also got its new name after beign corrupted).
However, in Darkshore people had other problems. Huge sea creatures had washed ashore on the coasts for unknown reasons and the threat of the apocalyptic cult known as the Twilights Hammer grew and their allignace with the ancient and evil creatures known as the Old Gods...

South of Felwood and Darkshore, Ashenvale lied having survived demonic attacks. Instead the whole eastern side of the huge forest was under siege by the Horde.
The Horde wanted to cut down the trees in order to get lumber since there was no other large source of woods in Kalimdor but the Night Elves had a strong hatred for the Orcs after they had killed their beloved demigod Cenarius during the Third War.
The main battles took part in the Warsong Gulch between the Silverwing Sentinels and the Warsong Clan.

Through the demonic corruption, the once peaceful and friendly Furbolgs had gone crazed and mad - attacking everyone at sight.
Only a very few number of tribes remained healthy - and its been discovered that over 95% of all Furbolg clans went corrupted and crazed after the war.

The conflict with the Twilights Hammer also contiuned in Ashenvale on the Zoram Strand to the far west.
There, inside an ancient, underground and partly sunken temple of Elune was the seat of power for the Twilights Hammer.
They attempted to defend a minion of the Old Gods, the gigantic hydra Aku'mai inside.
Even the orginastion known as the Argent Dawn came to the ancient temple (which now is knowned as the Blackfathom Deeps) to destroy the ancient evil.
Through both agents of the Horde and the Argent Dawn/Alliance the Twilights Hammer members in this area was killed and their operations destroyed...

In Felwood a sub-faction of the Cenarion Circle known as the Emerald Circle attempted to restore and cleanse Felwood from demons and their fel energies. The Horde also had a small camp here.
Interesting however was that in the northern parts of Felwood, one of the last furbolg tribes were hidden inside a wast cavern system.
The Timbermaw Furbolgs are situated here, and it takes a lot time for them to trust outsiders and gaining passage to the tunnels (which leads to the mysterious Moonglade and the beautiful Winterspring region).
The Timbermaw also happens to be the largest healthy furbolg group.

In Moonglade, to the north of Felwood and the Timbermaw Hold - the Cenarion Circle has their headquarters as does the Archdruid Malfurion himself. Malfurion is however trapped within the Emerald Dream, which has been corrupted by a force only known as the Nightmare.
His Barrow Den is invaded my twisted monsters from the Nightmare and the Dream and his body could not be found inside.

Without Malfurion, its unsure if the Night Elves ever will be able to heal the land and restore their ancient glory...

The Stormwind Crisis & The Missing King
After the Third War, the human lands of Lordaeron had been ravaged and plagued by the Scourge.
Many had died and even more had become mindless Undead serving the Lich King. The Kingdom of Stormwind to the far south remained one of the last bastions of powers for humanity along with Theramore Isle and perhaps Kul'Tiras.

However Stormwind faced many problems and threats from within. The Kingdom had been almost totally destroyed by the bloodraged orcs during the First War and further weakened during the Second War.
The capital of Stormwind (the same name of the nation) had been destroyed and it was time to rebuild it.

The Nobles paid the famous Stonemason Guild to rebuild much of Stormwind however when the huge and expensive project was complete - the Nobles refused to pay the Stonemasons.
The leader of the Stonemasons, Van Cleef, led a riot against the Nobles which killed King Varians wife.
Van Cleef then left Stormwind for good with a large amount of followers. They would rename themself to the Defias Brotherhood - living as bandits and assassins determinated to have vengeance agains the Nobles.

Just a couple of years ago, King Varian mystically disappaered on an diplomatic mission to Theramore and Jaina Proudmoore.
This caused the nobles to get very much control over the nation and the attractive and young noble called Lady Katrana Prestor took the leadership along with Bolvar Fordragon, a friend of the king.

The Defias knew of this a made it their advantage. Having their base deep under the ghosttown of Moonbrook, the Defias begun to strike at the farmers of Westfall - a farming region south of Elwynn Forest where Stormwind City is located.
After the reconstruction of the capital city, the Nation had like zero money and so, but also because of the nobles were greedy and Katrana Prestor didnt want to, the Defias had almost no resistance in destroying Westfall. Westfall didnt have this name untill after the Defias begun to operate here though and it once held great roaming fields of grass and not the barren dying fields it is today.

Anyway, the Defias had advanced to Elwynn Forest but failed there as the retailation was to strong there.
In Elwynn Forest the population had their own problems, the Gnolls from Redridge Mountains to the east had recently almost invaded the Forest it seemed like.
No place in the forest was safe now - and Gnolls roamed beind every tree and bush.

The Defias also had a small amount of operations in the region known as Duskwood. Duskwood was once an big sub-area of Elwynn Forest and is the home to one of the five portals to the Emerald Dream - however all these portals except one is held by the Nightmare and by corrupted Green Dragons.

Anyway, Duskwood is a cursed and grim forest. The Last Guardian, Medivh, was possessed by Sargeras during the First War and it was he who opened the first portal to Draenor and let the Orcs invade Azeroth.
East of the region now known as Duskwood, the Deadwind Pass lies. Here Medivh lived in the huge gray tower known as Karazhan - filled with horrors and echoes of past times.
Karazhan spread some corruption on its western neighbour but it was not enough to corrupt the region to 100%.

No, it was only recently it became Duskwood and home to wolfmen called the Worgen. A Night Elf sentinel and priestess called Velinda Starsong battled the Burning Legion remenamts in Felwood but was losing.
So she prayed to the moon goddess Elune and Elune gave her a wooden Scythe. The Scythe could be used to summon wolfmen from another plane. Velinde summoned them and they fough the Legion. She was happy with the results and learned that they called themself the Worgen.

However she lost control over the Scythe, and it summoned more and more Worgen. In the end, she could not control them anymore and they grew more feral.

But Velinde had heard of a powerful Archmage in Lordaeron called Arugal and decided to seek him up for assisstance.
He had also managed to summon this beasts - although by darker methods...

Velinde took a Goblin ship to Stranglethorn Vale, south of Westfall. She ended up in the region now known as Duskwood and was (speculated) killed in an old mine which was abanoaded.
She was presumed to be killed by her own creations, the Worgen which the Scythe had summoned.
The Scythe has now disappaered - but its rumored that the Dark Riders of Deadwind Pass holds it.

Either way, the Scythe complete the regions corrupted and it became known as Duskwood. The region became home to a number of outcasts, including some Necromancer and Fleshcrafter.
Duskwood holds many legends, and I could write several pages on just that zone.
For more (but not 100% accurate) information about Duskwood, look at Wowwiki.com/Duskwood or just begin to play WoW and do quests and missions in Duskwood.

Anyway, Duskwood didnt have reinforcements either and neither did the northern region of Redridge Mountains.
Long ago Redridge Mountains stretched to the far north, and was a part of the dwarven kingdom of Khaz-Modan.
Sadly, war spawned between the three dwarven factions - the Wildhammer, Bronzebeard and Dark Irons.
It became known as the War of the Three Hammers and after the dwarven king had died, everybody battled for the throne.
The Bronzebeard were the strongest and the Wildhammer moved to the north and created the halls of Grim Batol.

The Dark Iron was more of a challenge - but nothing special.
Untill they learned how to summon foul elementals from a distant plane were chaos reigned...
A Dark Iron known as Modgud managed to summon the leader of the Fire Elementals - Ragnaros the Firelord.
One of the Elemental Lietuants that fought for the Old Gods in the very begining of Azeroths history.
But Ragnaros was to strong, and enslaved the Dark Irons.
When he emerged, most parts of the Redridge Mountains were transformed into a blackened and dead land of ashes and flames.
To this day, those areas are known as the Searing Gorge and the Burning Steppes.
The Blackrock Mountain, a giant volcano created by Ragnaros, separtes them.

There is now only a small part of Redridge left and it has very much problems since Stormwind doesnt send forces there either.
The Orcs are invading from Blackrock Mountain (which has been controlled by them with like 25-30% since 20-30 years back in time) and have already seized Stonewatch Keep.
Now they threaten to destroy the town of Lakeshire and move further west to destroy the whole nation of Stormwind...

However agents of the Alliance has uncovered much of the Defias, Nobles and Orc stuff and uncovered that they have a big connection and that all this stuff is much, much larger then anyone could imagine.

First of all, the Defias is allied with the Twilights Hammer, the Black Dragonflight, the Bloodsail Pirates, a group of Goblins AND the Naga!!!
They are building a massive ship, which looks like the Ogre Juggernaunts of the Second War, which will be able to blast Stormwind to ashes.

In addition, the King returned with the release of Wrath of the Lich King (or like a month before even) and this is his story:

The Stormwind King Varian Wrynn was on a ship to Theramore to discuss the Horde with Jaina Proudmoore.
But the Kings ship was attacked by Defias and perhaps even Naga and he was washed ashore in the new orc lands of Durotar.
Varian was taken as a slave for a secret arena/gladiator society known as the Crimson Ring.
Together with two other slaves, Broll Bearmantle and Valeera Sanguinar - they were forced to battle in arenas as a team.
Broll was a veteran of the Third War and a powerful Druid. Valeera is a Blood Elf rogue, addicted to magic.

They manage to flee and several people attempts to stop them. Varian, having forgot who he is and is called Lo'gosh by everyone, gets flashbacks of his old life and with the help of Jaina Proudmoore and Aegwynn (who was once a Guardian and the mother of Medivh) they manage to find out that Lo'gosh totally is the lost King.

Broll, Valeera and Lo'gosh/Varian sails across the Ocean and defeats a group of Naga who wants to kill them.
At Menethill Harbor they begin the huge wandering to the gates of Dun Algaz and the the dwarven kingdom of Khaz-Modan.
Lo'gosh/Varian meets Thargas Anvilmar, ancestor to the old dwarven king whos death became the begining of the War of the Three Hammers.

Thargas helps them to rescue a political human prisoner and kill some Dark Irons in their base in Blackrock Mountains were the Dark Iron/Elementals have a war against the Orcs/Black Dragons.

In the Blackrock Deepths, they rescue the political human prisoner Windsor. Windsor tells them that the nobless Katrana Prestor is a betrayer and the Black Dragon queen Onyxia in a human disguise!
At the same time, in Stormwind, another Varian returns to Stormwind (not the same as Lo'gosh Varian) but when he returns, his son Anduin Wrynn (who is 10-years old and became king when his father we missing) says that its not the Varian her remembered and he thinks he is an impastor!

Lo'gosh, Windsor, Valeera and Broll (Thargas left them) then returns to Stormwind City and reveals that Katrana is indeed the daugther of the black dragon aspect Deathwing/Neltharion.
But the other Varian says that he is the real one and Lo'gosh says he is the real one and vice versa.
We dont know what happens next because the comic book is not completed but Onyxia somehow flees to her lair on Kalimdor (in the Dustwhallow Marsh) and is later slain by Alliance forces.
Also the Half-Orc assassin Garona has something with this to do - but we dont know yet.

That is the Kings history.

Now lets return to the Defias.
The Black Dragons used the Defias as tools and Onyxias brother Nefarian, who controls the Orcs of Blackrock Spire, cooperates with her. While she is playing with leadership and not giving any Alliance lands any good forces, her brother invades with his Orcs.
Meanwhile she uses the Defias to further destroy one of the last but strongest bastion of humanity from within.

The Defias leader is killed in their mainbase which has the name the "Deadmines" but their story doesnt end here.
In the Stormwind prison which is called the Stockades, where many Defias are kept, there is a riot and the new Defias mastermind and leader is located there - but Stormwind manages to retailate and execute all prisoners inside along with their leaders.
I would also like to mention that the Stockades is the most useless instance/Dungeon in the whole game -.-

The Mountains of Khaz-Modan
Not much happens in the Dwarf and Gnome starting zones, just like nothing really happens for the Trolls and Tauren in the begining of the game.

The Dwarves are defending their lands against the invading Troggs, they dig in the ground to find out more of their ancestors and they battle against the native Ice Trolls.
They also drink a lot and have problems with the Dark Iron Dwarves.

The Fall of the Gnomes
The Gnomes assissted the Alliance with amazing technology during the First and Second War but vanished during the Third War.
But they had a reason.
Their high-tech capital of Gnomeregan was invaded from underground, from the vile Troggs.
High Tinkerer Thermaplugg released radiation on the Troggs despite the other Gnome leaders saying it was to dangerous.
But the Troggs only got empowered with the radiation and the Gnomes themself fell victim to it...
The Gnomes got mutated by the radiation into Leper Gnomes.
Gnomeregan was forced to be abanoaded, and Thermaplugg himself became victim to the radiation.
The Leper Gnomes are blind and think everyone is a Trogg so the Gnomes have faced resistance in retaking Gnomeregan - if its even possible.

It also rumored that Thermaplugg released the radiation because he hated the other High Tinkerers and from within Gnomeregan - Dark Iron ambassdors have been seen...

That was all for the Alliance in the begining of WoW - we will have Burning Crusade, all Horde races, BC races and the mid-end game history in classic WoW/BC

It has to beat Halo 3 though - something which, apparently, not even the original WoW (not just an expansion) could have done.

Let's see if it can beat this:
Quote:
Microsoft Corp. today announced that “Halo 3” has officially become a global phenomenon, garnering more than $300 million in sales in the first week alone. The critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive, which was released worldwide on Tuesday, Sept. 25, is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

btw is anyone here a fan of WoW and is interested in the story? Just asking because maybe you'll continue to write the story without anyone reading it... (and waste your time) - it's just that I've seen a lot of anti-WoW people here and that's why I had this idea.

How can it be propaganda, when someone serious (a redactor of LEVEL (Romanian Magazine)) said that he saw this many people online?

Here's the source (in Romanian)

And here is a quote:
Quote:
Within the first 20 hours alone, we’ve seen more than a million Xbox LIVE members come online to play Halo 3 – that makes September 25 the most active Xbox LIVE gaming day in history.
Do you think that this was 'affordable' to be propaganda, when anyone could see this (since the game was released)? Then how do you know other infos are not propaganda as well?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Halo 3 fan (haven't even played it), but I don't think this can be a propaganda, since everyone could 'verify'

But let's get back on the WoW discussion... is there any WoW fanatic () fan around here?

Yes I know, 99% of everybody hates WoW and Warcraft (and perhaps even all of Blizzard) here and like EA/Microsoft/Lolwhatever.

Tomorrow im getting WotLK and installing it.
I will do a review and will try to not rate it über good because its my favorite game of all time.

Seriously, with the new update (aka Patch 3.0) I already have tons of fun without the expansion and I guess thats not changing >.>

Anyway I dont just write this for this site, but I will post it on the forums.scrollsoflore.com website (a warcraft lore site) and perhaps the official and european WoW forums - although they are idiots there -.-

And I do have a couple of low level characters (15-40) on RP servers although I mainly play on Dragonblight PvE and Dunemaul PvP (I have heard that you cant even walk one step without getting killed/ganked in Northrend on PvP servers -.- ).

If you found any lore errors/mistakes then you could just have posted them instead of flamming me for unknown reasons

This is the history through the quests in World of Warcraft + some on the official WoW sites and the official encylopedia (not Wowwiki lol, Blizzards encylklopedia which was never completed or developed further -.-).

I will update when I get time.

And I enjoy writing so I dont waste my time in any way

WoW would be good.. if you didn't need to pay for it.

That's what repelled me from this game the very first day it was announced and it remains like that until today.

I am poor. I don't have 20 euro per month for a game when I earn about 150 per month

But it might depend on what country you live in

WoW would have been very different if Blizzard didnt get money from their subscribers.
I belive it would have been much worse then.
