Shattered

Once the desert covered only a small portion of this once thriving world.  Even the frozen north had areas of green in small pockets underground.  People would come from hundreds of miles away to see the vibrant colors of the fields of Yems both during the first blooms of spring and the turning of the leaves in fall.

Now dust and sand cover over 90% of all the land. Even where some of the lakes and rivers once flowed gently, only dried cracked dirt can be found.

As for one particular area, a monument to the prideful folly of mortals stands stark against the mounds of sand.  Decrepit and almost falling to ruin, it was once the pride of all the lands.  Giant silver statues once gleeming and shiny now stand cracked and broken.  In the once revered halls of The Arena..all that can be found is decay and death.  From the Scar, and once mighty Scarsdale, to the once frozen castle of the frost giants..there is only desert.  The few packets of fresh water are warred over constantly.

The humans, once the weakest of the races, now have the advantage over the other races.  Not as tied to magic, and with superior numbers, they have visciously guarded the dwindling water supply.

A change blows in the wind.  Creatures, long ago driven underground and near extinction have started to surface.  They seek revenge while they still have the strength.  This world is dying, and only the strongest and most determined will survive.

Heather walks along the desert, the heavy winds striking her back with small bits of sand. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, with her armor protecting her from the majority of the stings, but the temperature had gotten unbearable a short while ago, and she decided it was for the best that she remove it.

Slowly fatigue gathered within. She knew she had to make it to her destination soon, or become another piece of this massive desert. Each step taken without a sign of her destination brought this fear closer and closer to truth.

To add to her problems, the continual sand storm made it rather difficult to see more than a few feet ahead of her. She hoped that she was still heading to Scarsdale. Doing her best to keep her balance, she continued onward. She was just glad that the wind was blowing with her, and not against her.

Right as that moderately happy thought entered her mind, the winds died down. A good thing this was, though being used to the winds, and extremely tired, she lost her balance, and fell over. The sight before the fall’s completion was that of the Scar. She had made it to its edge.

Stargust looked around Scarsdale. It had been nearly half a century since he had last set foot in the city. A city that, much like the rest of the world, was slowly withering away. He could feel the winds of change blowing as he entered his disheveled shack. The shack was his only possession in the city, besides his trusty enchanted dagger and his traveler's cloak. The leylines of mana were so deteriorated that he couldn't even summon a new familiar to replace the one he had lost about twenty years past. Sighing, he returned to his studies to attempt to find a way to restore the world...

In the ruins of the ancient city next to the scar, Najash the gorgon was waking up. She had made the ruins to her little hideout. She slept there when she was tried and went to scarsdale to hunt some food, hopefully elfs, as delicious as they were.

- "Ahh, another good sleep, now I need breakfeast... hmm..." Najash though to herself

Najash got a clims of an rat in the corner of her eyes. She quickly turned around and threw herself over it, the Rat died out of an hearth attack from the sudden attack from something it obviously had not seen.

- "Hmm...well, works like an appeticer, enough to get my energy level up enough to that I actually care to go out on hunt." Najash though

Najash quickly consumed the rat before equiping herself and go out of the chapel she had slept in and into the sun. Outside it was quite warm, and Najash could see there had just been a sandstorm.

- "That's good, these always seem to come with some fool that serve excellent as breakfeast." Najash Though

And soon afterwards, Najash was proven right, as she found, three creatures laying in the sand, excausted because of the sandstorm. They were as following: A gnome, an orc and an elf, the delicious creatures. Najash found them seperately, but they all made quite nice for one breakfeast. Stuffed, Najash started to crawl back to the ruins, but on the way she saw another poor lost and excausted soul. This one seemed to be an halfling and was quite awake it seems. As Najash hate to spill food, she started to crawl against the halfling.

- "Hey there! You alive and kicking?" She asked

An indistinct little spec moved along the horizon of the great deserts. Khira was it's name and it roamed the lands, for he was a wanderer or so he fancied himself so; a nomad, a desert warrior. Khira made his way onwards to Scarsdale, since he was looking for an enchanter there to deliver a letter. Why or what he didn't know. He only knew he was being paid and that no harm would fall on innocents along the way...

At least... Not by him...

The desert was a cruel mistress who sheltered him and taught him, but it takes life away from others. It took a while for Khira to realize that. His only companion who sticked with him for as long as he can remember was a jackal, which he named Varo. It was a name typical one of the ancient empires.

He suddenly encountered a rather small breast plate and other plate mail attachments. It was just lying there on the ground. "Those who take steel into the desert, die." Khira said decisively, but there was no death in the vicinity. Everything was just sand and wind. "Where was the body?" he wondered out loud. Varo took advantage of his master's hesitation and lied down to rest for a moment. "No, I don't think he went that way... Or would he? Varo, stop guessing around and come up with straight answers!" Khira said. Varo got up and went to sit down next to where Khira was standing.

"I knew it! You wouldn't believe me, but I told you those prints where made by halflings!" He suddenly shouted. Varo followed his master who gleefully went in the direction of Scarsdale to deliver a letter AND find this interesting individual who escaped the dry and crusty hands of lady desert.

"Happy birthday, Xerces!"  Another year, another birthday, another anniversery of Xerces's pointless existence.  Each flickering candle represented a painful year.

"Happy?  Yeah, I bet you're happy that I'm one year closer to being dead.  All set to dance on my grave?"  The black-clad teen sat uncomfortably, in juxtaposition to his parent's pastel blue dining room.  Four smiling faces instantly deflated at the depressed teenager's musing.

"By the gods, can't you just enjoy your birthday like a normal teenager?"  Mr. Mooncry lamented caressing the bridge of his nose.  The 49 year old dentist could do little to hide his disgust.  His sweet little boy that laughed and played, was slowly replaced by the dejected wretch to his left.  Since the boy's 13th birthday it's been nothing but "life sucks" this and "I wish I were born 500 years ago so I could have been destroyed in the great war" that.  Mr. Mooncry was only comforted by the hope that his son would grow up by his next birthday.

An eyeshadowed face darted at Mr. Mooncry.  Ebony lips framed the words.  "Yeah, you'd like that wouldn't you?  Look at me, Mr. Happy.  Hey, now that I'm happy why don't I become a dentist?"

"XERCES TIMMOTHY MOONCRY!  YOU WILL NOT TALK TO YOUR FATHER LIKE THAT!"  Ms. Mooncry's shrill immediately won the attention of her husband and three children.  There was little someone awaiting death as eagerly as Xerces feared but his mother was one of them.  "I will not have you ruin yet another birthday celebration!  Go to your room!"

"Great."  Xerces sneared as he pushed back from the table and beelined for the basement steps.  The basemenet was his sanctuary.  Dark, gloomy, and forbodding; the perfect pad for the damned.  The perfect shield from one of the few places in the world not to be ravaged by the great war 500 years ago.

"Ah Revel, the newest bastion of civilization and keeper of the Highlord's Tower secrets.."
The young bard mused, it had been a long boat trip. He was a wanderer, moving from place to place collecting lore, entertaining people and looking for thrills. A port town looked promising, at least it would be less boring than the desert and it even had its local legend - who knows with some luck he might be able to locate it.

But for now he was feeling rather thirsty so he tied the boat at the docks and headed for the nearest tavern. His pockets were empty so he nimbly pickpocketed a stranger on the way, meh the cheap bastard didn't have much on him. He passed some coins to the barkeep.

"Hello my friend get me some of your finest wine for I have been long at sea! (Four excruciatingly boring days) What's happening around this place of the world, anything of interest?"

Yuri was standing near the ocean, peace of old greatness and memories. He still remember when he was here for last time - the small village of Nikara. Now the place where Nikara was. The dark hordes burned the place. And then the massacre... the massacre... they were watching everything through the seer's orb in the Great forest.

Even now, 540 years after this pogrom the white bones were here. Rips, skulls, vertebras and even full skeletons were all over the sand...

Yuri was standing near a pile of skull, some of them still with hair on them. He was holding small golden necklace with a ruby on it.

"Nura, my love... you keeped it... - silence - I'm sorry, but now I need it back..."

Heading across the desert is not an easy task. Especially during the day, and with not even a drop of water.
- Eran-tusa-kaava! - said the druid loudly, he was holding the Ivy staff toward a heap of rocks - Eran-tusa-kaava! - nothing - Fire to earth and earth to water!

Strong ray of green light hitted the stone, Yuri raised his arm:

"Let me hold you!" a small balloon of water was flying, near his right hand. "At least this works... still..."

3 days passed. Hey what's this? Some kind of pokey little house?

It was a tavern, he entered. Finally this was the place, he was looking for. Just in this moment he heard:

"Get me some of your finest wine for I have been long at sea!"

Everyone started to laugh. The tavern keeper said to the man who ordered: "Wine? Well sorry prince Richard, but this is a desert tavern, here the wine cost gold, a lot of!"

Yuri was near, he put small coin on the bar and said: "I class of water please!" The tavern guy returned in a moment with a glass full of sand and splashed the contents of it into his face. "Here" - everyone started to laugh louder.

Yuri cleaned his face with hand and said "So what you got here? Isn't this a damn tavern?".

"We are keeping the water for tradesmen from The Bazaar, for you... we still have some flat cactus juice".

"Eh, good enough..." - answered Yuri.

Heather hears a voice sounding of something she had never heard before. It sounded a little off. With what energy she had gained from her short rest, she rolled over, and into a standing position. Staying always ready to quickly grab a weapon, she responds.

“I am alive, yes. I’m sure I can kick too, if the need for it arises.”

Heather takes a glance around the area, noticing what’s near, including where Scarsdale lies.

Rising from a small dune of sand, Chasem Niidar rose from the earth.
He shrugged, trying to erase all scraps of sand left in his ribs or armor.

"How long has it been since I last stood up? How long has it been since I fought." He said to the world in general looking up in the bright sky.
"Days? Weeks? Months? Years?" A cold rage started to fill him.
The last he remembered was collapsing as the magic started to disappear.

Somehow, the spell which bound him to this plane had repaired itself. Still, his power was very weak, he felt a degenerated sort of embarrassment for sinking to these levels of power.
At least his sword was sharp, a bit rusty, but that could be fixed.

"So the magic is still weak, seems like I have to do something about it." Then, in his cold thoughts, he remembered his master. Fallen in battle. How would he, a minion, a simple pawn in the great game, be able to do something to change the world.

Suddenly he realised that he had never been able to think this clearly, a veil must have been over him during the servitude, which was now over. However, he remembered everything he had done under his servant years.

Then he realised that he wasn't alone, a halfing female standing with a shaded thing towering over her. Both was staring at him.

At the edge of Scarsdale, leaning against the remains of an abandoned hut, sat Galen dro'Sil. The half-orc was hefting a small pouch all while not looking very happy. After a brief pause he scrambled to his feet, let out an angry roar, and flung the pouch as far out into the desert as his strength would allow. As soon as it struck the sand, some of its contents spilled out revealing the source of the half-orc's rage. The bag was full of counterfeit coins.

After slumping back against the ruined hut, he muttered to himself.

"Just going to have to get another job sooner. And live more cheaply than usual. I hate those greedy peddler merchants."

On the Morning of Alkember 6 ((basically the next morning wherever you are)) a odd sight is seen in the sky.  It is the sun, but it is an odd shade of blue (Normally it is the usual yellow color).  It raises in the sky and stays blue for the entire day.  That night..the moon rises full, except it had just gotten past is full stage 4 days ago, and it is a baleful green.  Something odd is going on.  The day of the blue sun, it is nice and cool for the first time in a long time.

The next day, the heat is worse then ever.  No clouds all day, anywhere.

Khira kept up a high pace. "Damn, this weather is annoying." He complained. Varo was beathing heavily with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. "No, Varo, you're not getting any water, now, we need to stick to our schedule." Khira said in a firm tone of voice. Varo ran away and bared it's teeth into a seemingly random direction. "I told you-" Khira started, but Varo making a low growl. "Ow, I see." the desert warrior said and grabbed his bow. He let fly an arrowand it landed a few inches in front of Varo. A snake appeared from the sand which was struggling with an arrow stuck in it's body.

Varo walked back. "Fine!" Khira said and took out his flask. He gave him some and put it back away. "You know you'll be eating that, right?" Khira said. Varo stayed quiet for a moment...

After two days, travelling through the desert from a moderate coolness to a scorching heat, he finally saw the outlining of the great Scar. He noticed that he lost the tracks by now. "Poor fella." Khira said, "at least the desert has confirmed that you do not venture in it's house with steel armor." Khira wrapped his cloak tighter around him to keep the heat away. "NO! I am not carrying you, varo and that's that!"

Stargust noticed the odd change of weather and had coincidentally just finished reading his latest acquisition from the city's library, so he decided to head back to turn in it.

The trip to the library was uneventful, like most of Scarsdale. Time had not been a kind mistress to the once-majestic city. Brigands lied in wait in the darkest alleys to try and get a quick profit off of the very occasional visitors to the town. Most of the merchants were going bankrupt as the few who had items of current value were monopolizing the market.

As Stargust opened the door to the library, he saw the familiar face of the librarian. The dwarven librarian grunted in greeting as he looked at Stargust. He then asked:

"Why do you even bother to return these books? You're the only person who even uses this library anymore. The books are falling apart from heat and mildew."

Stargust just smiled as he handed the dwarf the book and asked:

"Anything new happening in town?"

To which the dwarf replied:

"When is there ever?"

Stargust then headed towards the bookshelves, looking for a book that could help him figure out what was going on with the world.

Not long after the wizard started going about his research, a halfling female comes in, yelling at someone outside.

“You’re lucky I’m in a forgiving mood right now!”

She slams the door, and whips a bit of blood off her knuckles, on some spare cloth, throwing it on the floor afterwards. She sees the dwarf, and decides to visit with him. Climbing up on a nearby table, she starts to converse.

“Hot, yeah? Why couldn’t it stay as it was yesterday? A nice, cool day. Sure, the sun going blue was off, but it was nice anyway. Then the green moon. That was kind of fun, I think.”

Heather takes a break from her ramblings, and looks around. She notices the wizard, and a whole lot of books; nothing of which she cared about. Not even herself interrupting the studious one.

“So, anything going on in this place? It seems rather dull.”

Stargust notices the female halfling enter the library and takes one brief look out of the corner of his eye. However, said halfling then moved closer and asked him:

“So, anything going on in this place? It seems rather dull.”

This is enough to distract the wizard from his studies, so he returns the book he was looking at to the appropriate shelf and replies:

"Hello there! You must be new...never have seen you around here."

He makes a motion with his hands and continues:

"No, nothing is going on in this place. Yes, it is very dull."

He pauses for a second, the halfling's question answered, and resumed:

"I am attempting to figure out how to fix this world's problem. Up to now, my studies have been fruitless. However, I do know this, whatever caused this...was...drastic."

The elven wizard then starts to mumble something about how annoying it is to not be able to figure out a solution to a problem. He then speaks up again:

"Never have found a problem I couldn't solve. I've been tackling this particular one for oh...two decades now."

He frowns and concludes:

"Not doing much good though..."

He shakes his head and then asks:

"Anything you'd like to know? I dare say I know most of the non-human inhabitants of the city. Well, those that let themselves be known, anyways."

He winks and looks around for another book, awaiting the answer.

"Ga-ow!"

Galen's nap was rudely interrupted by something striking his head. Lying next to him was a piece of roofing from the abandoned hut he had been resting in. Now there was enough open space where the roof once was to let the hot sun shine down directly on him, and this just wouldn't do.

Walking out of the remains of the hut, he spied the next best candidate: the library. Wouldn't be the first time he caught some shuteye in a library, and likely not the last.

Into the library he went, hoping he didn't seem too out of place. He grabbed a random book and headed into a corner where he would open the book to a page near the middle and then lay his head down. It was just too hot to do anything during the day. At least, anything outdoors.

Abandoned city outside Scarsdale - Two peices of empty armor had been standing on pedastals for a long long time.  With magic gone awry normally they would have just stood there, forgotten sentries powerless to protect the city.  But magic was not fully dead..yet.  Deep in the helmets blazing red orbs light up..and the suits begin to walk.  Their targets..the intruders in the city.

Inside of Scarsdale a loud cheer is heard.  People are gathering in the town square..something is going on.

In the town of Revel sails appear on the horizon.  Three ships, with shining silver sails, and a bright green emblem (That of a enormous tree) can be seen on the sails. Iust as the barkeep was about to make an non comittal reply some young person throws open the door.  "Ships coming to port, something like never seen before!  Silver sails they have!  Silver sails!" Though it is not unusual for ships to come into port, these particular ships are causing quite a stir.

Inside the Tavern (?) (Yuri) - You suddenly notice that the only ones remaining in the bar are you, two drunken men wearing bear hides, and the bartender.  You over hear a conversation quite accidently.

"Did ya see the looks on the faces of those mages when we delivered those stones?" (Sorry can't write so it sounds drunk, just imagine it does ).

"Ya, like most men would look at a fine lady.  They owe the boss big for those."

"Darn right.  Imagine..stones that'll let em use magic safely..what mage would not pay handomely for that?"

(Others..not exactly sure where you are .. hcm me with location if you have not been updated).

At the library...

The librarian hears the cheering and says:

"Oi! There's something goin' on outside!"

Stargust raises an eyebrow and puts the book he was looking at back at its respective spot on the bookshelf. He then asks, more to himself than to the others present:

"I wonder what's going on?"

The librarian holds the door open for Stargust as they both leave. Stargust peers back inside to the library for one moment, asking the others ((Heather and Galen)):

"Coming?"

He holds the door open just in case they say yes.
