Ok that was a bit too smart for me. I did it this way (which is about the same, but probably more systematic - and cumbersome!):

Since X/10 has remainder 9, we know last digit is 9.

X/9 has remainder 8. This means that X - 8 is dividable by 9. Since X ends on 9, X - 8 ends on 1. The only numbers ending on 1 which are dividable by 9 are: 81 + n * 90, where n is some integer - corresponding to the X values of 89, 179, 269, 359, 449, etc. (Remember that the first series where possible values for X - 8).

X/8 has remainder 7. This means that X - 7 is dividable by 8. The only numbers ending on (9 - 7 = 2) thare are dividably by 8 are: 32 + n * 80 and 72 + n * 80. This can be contracted to the numbers 32 + n * 40, corresponding to the series 32, 72, 112, 152, 192, etc. This would yield X values of 39, 79, 119, 159, 199, etc.

X/7 has remainder 6. This means that X - 6 is dividable by 7. The only numbers ending on (9 - 6 = 3) which are dividably by 7 are: 63 + n * 70, corresponding to the series of 63, 133, 203, 273, 343, etc. yielding X values 69, 139, 209, 279, 349, etc.

X/6 has remainder 5. This means that X - 5 is dividable by 6. The only numbers ending on (9 - 5 = 4) dividable by 6 are: 24 + n * 60 and 54 + n * 60, contracting to 24 + n * 30. This yields the series 24, 54, 84, 114, 144, etc., corresponding to X values of 29, 59, 89, 119, 149, etc.

X/5 with remainder 4 yields us information we have already, namely that number must end on 9.

X/4 with remainder 3 tells us the same information that X/8 with remainder 7 tells us.

X/3 with remainder 2 tells us that X - 2 is dividable by 3. This yields the series 27 + n * 30, i.e. X values of 29, 59, 89, 119, 149, etc., the same as from X/6.

Finally, X/2 tells us number is uneven, which we already knew (it ends with 9).

To sum things up, we have 4 possible series of X values:

From 9: X belongs to: 89, 179, 269, 359, 449, etc.
From 7: X belongs to: 69, 139, 109, 279, 349, etc.
From 4: X belongs to: 39, 79, 119, 159, 199, etc. (also came from 8)
From 3: X belongs to: 29, 59, 89, 119, 149, etc. (also came from 6)

So, our objective is to find the smallest number present in all series. This is where a spreadsheet comes handy - but we can work around it! Like Geny sais, it's convenient to look at the number X + 1. From the above, we see that:

From 9: X+1 belongs to: 90, 180, 270, 360, 450, etc. = n * 90.
From 7: X+1 belongs to: 70, 140, 210, 280, 350, etc. = n * 70.
From 4: X+1 belongs to: 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, etc. = n * 40.
From 3: X+1 belongs to: 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, etc. = n * 30.

So, our objective is to find a number dividable by both 90, 70, 40 and 30. Since 90 = 3 * 30, any number dividable by 90 is by default dividable by 30. This reduces to find a common multiplum, of 90, 70 and 40.

Now, furthermore, since X ends with 9, with know that X + 1 ends with 0. That means that (X + 1)/10 is an integer, and must belong to one of these series:

From 9: (X+1)/10 belongs to: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, etc. = n * 9.
From 7: (X+1)/10 belongs to: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, etc. = n * 7.
From 4: (X+1)/10 belongs to: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc. = n * 4.

The problem then reduces to finding a common multiplum of 9, 7 and 4. One such number, obviously, is 9 * 7 * 4 = 252. This yields:

(X+1)/10 = 252   <=>
X + 1 = 2520     <=>
X = 2519

As you can see, this method is not quite as elegant as Geny's, but well, that was how I figured it out.

30 + 12 = 42
97 + 12 = 109

... or are we not supposed to repeat the same number for multiple letters?
