Poll Question:
Forum cleaning policy

I've done some cleaning of the forum lately (although it doesn't show much yet), and I would like to ask your oppinion before I proceed. Basically, what I want to know is how much cleaning you want to be done.

There are a lot of old threads lying about, many of which concern topics that are no longer relevant and people who are no longer here. Some topics still have value, like suggestions for new factions or game features, and these I think should remain - but people writing about their personal oppinion of this or that, who are no longer here, or discussing the wishes for a long since released expansion - do anybody still read these?

So, please share your oppinion below.

Responses:
I think a thorough cleaning is needed, only most relevant suggestions should remain.
I think some cleaning would be nice, make go of the obviously irrelevant topics.
I think only a minor cleaning is needed, the old posts are part of forum history.
No cleaning is needed, deleting old threads is like murdering a child!
I don't care.

Some cleaning is needed (most if not all of my threads are completely irrelevant wastes of time).

Wait wait what? Are you going to delete topics like this or this or this? I don't like this idea, I mean, some people put some of their time in those replies, even though it's probably just an opinion about Vampires and Dark Elves being (or not) together (this was just an example)

Those are part of the history and shouldn't be deleted IMO. I mean, that's what the forum is for, and not an instant messaging convo (ok, not really that extreme, but you get the point)

For example, if there gets a Heroes 6 released with some of the features suggested in one of these threads, would you delete the thread even if it has an interesting discussion, and people put a lot of their time and effort in their replies? Sure the thread is not that important anymore but I don't see why deleting it...

I suggest a closing of threads which discuss features already implemented in a game or expansion, but not deleting them.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm rather near to Asheera here, allthough I voted for the third point...I guess some threads could be closed and/or maybe put into a different forum, like "The ancient Library" - an archive for the older threads of the Altar!?
That would make the altar less filled without having to 'destroy' the ideas in the old threads...

No, those are not what I would call ancient. I was more thinking about deleting topics like this and this and this.

Omg the Ancient Library idea is awesome! There fun threads (like speculations for HoMM5 and HoMM6 when H6 gets released) could get posted etc.

Good point Asheera, I'll go with just locking them (except my first one, that 'does' need deleting).

Yeah, feel free to lock or delete those, it's just some whining by old farts. We can do that all over again when H6 is announced.

I wouldn't say delete, a locking could do. People put time and effort into writing those. It isn't as if they are just a sentence long or anything. they do have some value, whether it is a bit old or not. Just what I think anyway.

Some cleaning would be good, not just for our eyes and fingers, but also for the server.  I welcome the ancient library idea, though I would rather call it the Ancient Vaulthouse or something like that.

After some cleaning is done, it would be easier to do the TOC also (especially for Temple; it is screaming for an updated TOC now).

I'll deffinitely go forth with the Vault idea again, then. Quoting myself from the Turban Tribunal from 2 years ago:

Quote:
This feature concerns general forum cleaning and structuring, which I think is direly needed in several of the fora (especially the H5 fora where I have my main activity).

I posted some thoughts about extinct thread and forum cleaning in the Altar yesterday (bottom post), and in this context got the idea, that it would be nice if the forum had one or more internal archive vaults, where Moderators could move extinct (= old and inactive) threads. Threads moved to the Vaults would be locked, but could be revived and moved back to the Forum on request, if someone feel they have something new to add to the post. The internal Vaults would be better than a general vault (my original thought), because the archived posts would then be sorted by theme rather than being just a big mess.

The idea of this would be to get "cleaner" fora with only a limited number of pages (perhaps 15 instead of 60 or more), where it would be possible to actually browse through the active threads in a fair amount of time. This would also prevent the very annoying drowning of boards when a newcommer comes by and revives a host of extinct threads without having anything new to add (the Altar of Wishes experiences this post number boosting on a regular basis, which is very annoying).

To outline the major points of the idea:

- Each forum gets one or more Archive vaults, where extinct posts are placed.

- The number of Archives could vary between different fora. Thus, some fora might only need one (or even none) whereas other might need several (thus, the Altar of Wishes could need a Pre-Heroes 4 vault, a Heroes 4 vault, a Pre-Heroes 5 vault, and a Heroes 5 vault). The Moderators should administrate the number of types of vaults.

- All threads moved to the vaults are locked, but can be unlocked and moved back to the active forum on request. Requests shoud be given with a reason, that the Moderators evaluate. It is important that the Vaults contain only locked threads, because these are ment as Archives, not new active fora.

- Moderators should clean up their fora regularly. One suggestion would be to have cleaning on a monthly basis, and classifying all threads with no new posts in the last two months as extinct, moving them to the vaults.

- Threads that have been locked within the last month due to improper content or for other reasons are moved to the vault at the end of the month.

- Threads containing Quality posts are never considered extinct, and are therefore never moved to the Vaults.

- In terms of forum layout, one could add another selector in the bottom of the forum next to the Forum selector (and maybe move the "New Topic" and "New Poll" links a bit to the left) - something like this:

- Default when entering a Forum would always be the main forum page.

Burn them with the holy fire and smash them with you hammer! And bald head

The situation has already got better, but I remember tones of threads of "my dream donkey-monkey faction" and other bright ideas which are irrelevant in general. Good index of good content would be enough.

Vault aka. recycle bin will do the job, it's an excellent idea.

Ok, people of the Altar, you have been asked, your voices have been heard and will now be suitably ignored.

Nah, just kidding. During the last couple of days, I've been going through the Lands Of Axeoth, deleting about 600 extinct topics. Here are my current plans for the Altar based on what you have said:

* I will go through the Altar doing a light cleaning, deleting topics that are obviously irrelevant today.
* Threads that have relevance solely for Heroes 3 / Heroes 4 (such as specific wishes for patches of said games) will be moved to Library Of Enlightenment and Lands Of Axeoth.
* Threads that have relevance for the general nature of the game (such as game features and faction suggestions) will remain for now.
* I will bring up the topic of Vaults in the Mod Squad again, but don't think it will be a reality anytime soon, as Val is fairly busy elsewhere.

If the vaults at some point becomes a reality, we'll take action according to that.
