homm 4 only for veterans?

there is a big problem with homm series:it is too difficult
for a new player to learn and master the game.i believe from what i alraedy knowthat it is going to be even harder with homm4.what do you think about that?
how is homm4 going to challenge new players?

I disagree...

HoMM4 will be easier for new players to learn... we "veterans" might have some problems though... adapting to the new system and all... who knows maybe even your GF will play HoMM4

If you wanna see a complicated game go for Stars!

As far as H4 are concerned, IMO 3DO wants them as simple as possible so that they will attract new customers and not only its old fans.

Sadly simple rarly means better, there are tons of 'cool' features that I would like to see in the game, which never be included b/c they will make the game way too complicated.

you miss my point
you already know about skills, spells, towns, artifacts, etc almost everything(at least i hope so) and so does all experienced homm players
will a newbie have the patience to learn all this?
same problem was with homm 3

I don't think the "learning curve" of HOMM is so hard. If you set the difficulty to easy or normal, you can start fighting quickly. You'll get low ratings and miss a major portion of features, but if you get hooked you'll be able to improve your skills during years and years of enjoyable gameplay. I have played HOMM3 during uncountable hours and I discovered just yesterday that if you attack a blinded creature, his retaliation is much softer than if the creature is not blinded.

In my opinion, almost any flight simulator needs a greater effort from the player. But it's easy for me to say that: I've been playing strategy games since 1995 and the last flight simulator I played was the original X-Wing... :-)

HoMM learning curve - not hard at all

I picked up Heroes 2 within a week of having first played it, although I'm sure it helped that I was introduced to it by another player who had the game for a few weeks first. It doesn't take long for a new player to realize that Eagle Eye is useless, or that Stronghold is an offensive-geared town and Fortress is more defensive. Besides, most of the big tactical decisions just come down to style of play eventually - do you like to win with big creatures and let your hero give them bonuses, or involve the hero more directly with spells? Economy or military first (i.e. on Normal, do you go for week 1 Capitol or level 7 creature, or do a little of both)?

I agree with ancient, I reckon it will be harder for new players in H4. I would definetly rather be in our position of playing the whole series and having background knowledge on most skills, artifacts, creatures, spells and the like than to be thrown into the frey at this stage.

They'd have to learn all the dwellings on the map. There is no doubt this Heroes is going to be more complicated.

It will be difficult for new players, but no more so than H2 or H3. It also has simplified some things, such as no unit upgrades now (probably no Hill Forts and other upgrade locations either).

Clearly though, it won't be a pick up and play with no learning curve type of game. Hmmm.. perhaps shooters are most popular because of that aspect?

I think HOMM IV may be easier for new players to get up to speed with the old ones, as many of the rules we are used to won't be around any more.  In some ways it may be easier starting fresh than getting used to so many new things.  We are used to non-simultanous retaliation, hiring lots of heroes (OK, I am trying to get used to it), stats affecting the whole army....

I guess I am just trying to say it may be harder for us to get used to the new rules than someone playing the series for the first time, since we have to unlearn and relearn while they only need to learn.  Now this doesn't mean I think someone who is just starting will be able to trash Flamingo or the other "masters" right off, but they should have a fair shot at being somewhere in the middle.

The only other "sequel" with this many changes would have to be from King's Bounty to HOMM I.  It seems to me that H4 is going to be very much a new game with some of the elements of the heroes series that we are used to more than a few new concepts, towns, skills, like the others.
