You And Me And The Manson Make Three

Upscale salon downtown. Hairstylist Maggie working on a haircut.

Maggie: "My 10-year-old is getting out of control already with this emo thing she's going through."

Me: "What emo thing?"

Maggie: "She says she's emo and wants to cut her veins. I tell her emos are traumatized kids gone suicidal. You have a mom who loves you and a dad to spoil you rotten. You're not emo."

Me: "Why, is she really suicidal?"

Maggie: "No! She says cutting veins is what emo people do and she's emo. I ask her, do your parents beat you? You say no. Do we lock you up? Still no. They why are you calling yourself emo?"

Me: "Like that I'm-gay joke. Son walks up to his father and says in a pitched voice, 'Dad. I was afraid to tell you this but I'm telling you now. I'm gay'. And the father gives him a look. 'Well, son. Do you have a Porsche? No? A Ferrari then? How about a house in Malibu? Half a million in the bank? No? Well, son, no, you're not gay then. You're a friggin snow."

Maggie, crooking a smile: "Yeah. How am I supposed to handle this?"

Me: "Poor children. They have their values all messed up. Moms go back to work as soon as possible after giving birth, leaving grannies to babysit. Grannies tell them modesty is a must-have and teach them good kids have to have straight As in school. When they do get in school though, kids learn a different story, namely that modesty and straight As don't buy you the best cellphone or fashion wear. Before they've hit 10, they already watch sex and violence on TV and learn how their 12-year-old classmates give head at the back of the schoolbus. If I was a kid, I'd either have my values all messed up. Or more likely, think my parents are total hypocrites for telling me stupid stories about storks."

Me, pausing first: "They are virtually overloaded with information. With no experience to filter it, all crap goes directly to their little brains. The only way to get noticed these days is to think of, and do, something more shocking to attract attention. You don't have to make a point with it, it's a marketing tool. It's a competition who's going to come up with the most ridiculous or scandulous idea to get their 15 minutes of fame."

Maggie: "Yeah, that's how buggers like Marilyn Manson contaminate the world."

Me: "Well, I actually do listen to Manson. I have him here, on my MP3 player."

Maggie: "What, you listen to him?!"

Me: "Yes, I do! And I think he's misunderstood by most. He has some very interesting ideas in his songs - do you actually know what he sings about?"

Maggie: "Honestly, not."

Me: "His most popular song is actually anti-drugs. We see a lot of musicians abusing them but very few admitting in their works how hampering they can be."

Maggie: "I didn't know that."

Me: "No, because most people see a monster when they look at his picture. It's the shortcut to attracting the attention to what he does for a living."

I mean, what's people's problem with Manson. Okay, I like him and I like his music but this doesn't make me a monster. I'm not at all saying that everyone should start listening to him but isn't it way too easy to take all he does at face value? Horror movies have their merits, so does Manson. People with very controversial personalities or ideas are either loved or hated, aren't they? We see people who love Manson and people who hate Manson and very few in between.

In fact I find MM to be very similar to Madonna in a lot of ways. Both show intelligence off the charts when interviewed and both have launched their careers through style, rather than exclusive art. Madonna is an accomplished actress and dancer, not only a singer; Manson is an artist/painter and writes his own songs. Multitalented people with a streak of genuis often seem to be freaks - absolutely intentionally.

Manson first came into my personal spotlight when I saw an interview he gave when Mechanical Animals were released. I dismissed his contact lenses and heavy makeup and listened to what he was saying. He related how after a period of non-feeling he came back to the world of feeling and it looked bright, painful and scary. "The more I began to feel, the more and more the world seemed like mechanical animals. I was studying [...] how we numb ourselves and make ourselves more mechanical and less human."

I could definitely relate to THAT. He had more eyeliner on than I ever wore in my lifetime but to me it suddenly seemed only ... skin-deep. It was as if I had stashed away my secret diary, he had opened it and read it right there, at the interview. We had something in common. Since then I try to watch him with my eyes closed.

Maggie: "I heard he had a surgery to take out part of his abdomen so he could give himself a head."

Me, laughing: "Don't trust everything you hear. Especially given that Manson is one of the most heterosexual celebrities I know about."

For all that could be said about him, this man has one undeniable quality, that being his taste in women. I can wager $100 men started hating him when he married Dita more than mothers worldwide did. I'm a woman and my head was spinning when I watched her do the Martini glass dance; I can fancy what that did to males 12 to 112-years-old. I simply can't believe he left her slip. On the other hand, Evan is probably worth that sacrifise on his part. What I just said: this man just has a good taste as far as  women are concerned.

Me: "Have you seen Manson with no makeup on?"

Maggie: "I haven't. Does he ever do that?"

Yes he does but not that much, I told her. And just recently after this conversation I had with her, it finally dawned on me why. The truth is that with no makeup on Manson looks pretty.... ordinary. He's tall and keeps fit but the guy has no impressive physique. Unlike Evan, he had no looks to backup his creativity as an artist. So I'm thinking, if I'm intelligent above average, have a goth streak in me, I'm a good singer and songwriter and I look homely, what do I do?

Well very simple, do the eyeliner, the contact lenses, the latex clothes and there we go.

In conclusion, I can only say that seeing some sense in this person is a mixed blessing. Enjoying Manson is just like solving the hardest riddle in an adventure game. On the other hand, in the process I get to see so many mechanical animals.

I think I shouldn't hang out as much at salons any more.

I enjoyed this read and I can only agree.
I recon you're one of HC's oldies, Lady Milena. You're talking in that making-sense sort of way. Plus you got me on one of my favourite subjects and have the exact same opinion on it as I do. Just with a few more years of life experience.

Good to meet you.

Good to talk to you too, Baklava! I'm very happy you enjoyed my post (in fact I never would have but the Cookie asked me to because she was way too drunk!).

You said it was "one of [your] favorite subjects" but I did wonder, which one is that? I addressed a couple of things in the post/essay. I'd be glad to hear about yout thoughts as well.

P.S. Aaaaaand! It's not too nice to remind a lady of her age! ;-) *grannie clears throat and winks*

Well, alright, it's more along the lines of several connected subjects, but the idea is pretty clear.
First off, the emo part. It describes so well the pointlessness and childishness of some subcultures, and it touches the subject of children about to enter puberty not really being rational most of the time. The entire emo subculture revolves around such children, and I think that the first part of the text shows that well enough.
Then, the part with parents being similar as the kids in puberty just on the other side of the street. Same "I'm right and I know I'm right" attitude, same selective understanding. Just a bit more rationality and open-mindedness, but only to other adults.
Or at least that's how I understood those parts...
But that's not the point, the main reason why I like this article is your view on Manson. Very few people (both his "fans" and enemies) actually stop to hear him out, and most of those who do are just searching for things to take out of context, or (in case of fans) things that would look cool on their Myspace. But Manson is essentially on the verge of being a genius in his own right, a man who can talk astonishing amounts of sense to those who understand him. However, he isn't misunderstood because no one can get what he's saying, but because no one TRIES to get what he's saying. People are generally more obsessed with rumours like "hey, he took out a rib so he can give himself oral sex", or "hey, Britney's bald", or "hey, Jessica Alba's got a new boyfriend".
I just love it when I meet someone with a different attitude than that common one. That's all.

Good 'story'

To the Emo-discussion...I think everyone should do what he/she wants, if they think it's great. THe problem I got with the emo-'scene' (if you even want to call them so), is the following: They are so Made-up, now what I mean?! They do not just feel pain, they WANT to, and not to escape anything, but just to be 'cool' - or well, that's how it is in Germany - and I cannot appreciate that...I mean, if you feel pain that's you do it, and than I do not think it great to hurt yourself, but I can understand it, but it somehow has become cool to scratch yourself among the youth, or well, a part of it^^

And there's one hting I cannot underline:

Me: "His most popular song is actually anti-drugs. We see a lot of musicians abusing them but very few admitting in their works how hampering they can be."

I disagree here, I think there are several musicians doing that, and also popular ones, allthough those doing may not be majority.
