And who pays the taxes? The taxpayers do. So everyone ends up paying for some guy to go to college. (I'm not saying that it's bad, just that it's not free.)

Edit:
Well, I can't deny that I'm disappointed. My results:
OU - accepted
OSU - accepted
Washington University in St. Louis (I really wanted to go there) - wait-listed
Rice - wait-listed
University of Chicago (I really wanted to go there) - wait-listed
Claremont McKenna - wait-listed
Pomona - accepted
Yale - rejected
Stanford (I really wanted to go there) - rejected
Harvard (first choice!) - rejected

Hey MVASS,

Don't let it get to you.  It's a crap shoot, and it doesn't matter.

I got a Ph.D. from an Ivy League and sometimes I feel it's barely worth the paper it's printed on.

I know, it's hard to understand that when you're in high school looking upwards, but I want you to know that in the long run you may be better off.

The name of where you go to University doesn't mean much.  It's what you do with your brain and intelligence that makes the real difference.  If you have to tell people you went to Harvard in order to impress them, you have to ask yourself if you really have anything to brag about.  Let your accomplishments speak for themselves.  If you're truly a great person, it won't matter where you went to school.

Just my 2 (jaded) cents.

Corribus, there's quite a difference between Chemistry and Economics. A chemistry degree is a chemistry degree - it doesn't matter much where you get it. But an economics degree from a non-high-tier college is truly worthless.

Well to be fair, some would say that about a chemistry degree also.  Trust me there "top tier" chemistry programs also.

But anyway, I could spend hours writing about the problems with "elite" universities.

If you're truly brilliant, you'll excel no matter where you go to school.  If you go to school at all.  End of story.

@Mvass: I agree with Corribus 100%!

So what if you didn't get into Harvard? You've proven that you're very smart, and actions speak louder than words (even words written on a piece of paper given to you at graduation. ).

So, I'm sure you'll be fine.

@Corribus: I still don't know how you did that. I'm going mad in my Microbiology major, and I'm still an undergraduate.

Then again, it's the only thing I can fathom ever studying.

I should graduate next year though.

Who says I didn't?

But seriously... I got through it because I love the subject material.  I still do.

But, unfortunately, I have found that loving a subject isn't enough to be happy making a career around it.

I see.

Well, there's lots of career opportunities in Microbiology, so we'll see. I'm thinking of doing a Master's Degree in something related to Genetics...

But that's AFTER I take a well-deserved break from studying (even besides the fact that some of my professors are pressuring me to keep studying. )

Well, I'm not necessarily talking about lack of job opportunities.  It's just that, your priorities when you're 30 are quite different from those when you're 20.

My advice is to never stop learning and never stop investigating your options.  It's great to set goals, especially long term ones, but let your goals be fluid.  Otherwise, you will end up having achieved your goal and sitting there wondering what the heck you should do next.

Plan ahead.

I'd say the top universities have two advantages:

1- Better teachers that are more interesting to listen to and discuss with during class. Some are even people you admired as a writer earlier.
2- On average, smarter student profile. So again, more interesting in-class debates about the subject and in-depth participation.

On the contrary - having gone through a doctoral program at a top tier university, I can say that the quality of teaching was terrible. Most professors regarded teaching as a tiresome necessity (far less important that bringing in money in the form of research grants) and did not take the time to develop high quality curricula.  Almost all of my learning I did practically on my own.

Hmmm... But that research & money thing applies to positive sciences, if it's liberal arts or social sciences (which are more open to discussion and subjective commentary by nature) the participation in the classroom is sometimes everything.

To me learning must be spontaneous (guess I'm really lazy that way). In high school, I never did any homework, in late high school and university, I didn't even have a school bag or a notebook  with me, all I did was listen carefully and participate in discussions in the class. To have interesting teachers were crucial, I would have quit if they bored me, I did twice (right away in junior year) and the third time was the charm, only because the teachers were real intellectuals with depth and originality.
