Backseat Moderators

I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of backseat moderators - the members from the peanut gallery who every now and then have the urge to direct noobs, quote Code of Conduct, call for penalties and quality points...

Do you think they're helpful or annoying?

Personally, I wish they either 1) sent an HCM to a mod or the poster in question, or 2) posted in the Feedback threads, or 3) started a topic in the Tribunal.

But I guess I'm whining about whining so kthanxbai!

Depends on what exactly they do. If they say that a post is qp/penalty worthy or a thread is VW material, then it's usually annoying because those decisions are up to the mods alone and there are certain ways to talk with them about it (everything Vlaad listed above).

However, if they're just being helpful to the noobs then they reduce the amount of work for the mods and give a quicker reply to the noobs which is good.

I think that when a member acts like a judge it's annoying, but when he acts like a (for the lack of a better word) boyscout, then it's all good.

As I am the 'noob' Mod I appreciate some help for the most part.  Though sometimes it may not appear so, I read every post in the glade, and sometimes my eyes just glare over.  If somebody gently nudges me to a great post (or poster) that I over looked, I am a happy camper.  Pretty much Geny has it right

Well just wondering, but if you see someone posting in the Tavern (example) about Heroes 5 Map making, shouldn't you see "Anyway, there's a different forum for that" and link to the MapHaven Guild? (after you answer his questions or whatever he made the thread for, of course)

I think this thread belongs in Wastelands.

Honestly it doesn't really bother me much at all. I never felt annoyed when other people did this. I always tried to encourage feedback from the members.

Oh kind of like one person who replied on here who acts like a judge & criticise or makes it like they are better then other people.
All in all this is a community where people can have fun & talk about whatever they want to in any forum.
Throughout the years this place has been catagorised & people are strayed from others because of all these forums.
I dont think I even heard of most of them.

Some commuters misbehave & some are just here to have fun.
If someone is out of line then by all means, they need to be told off.
Otherwise people dont need a babysitter.

There should be rules in every Message board but no need to be rediculas about it.

Plus i think we need to drop the deadweight mods who are not active & replace them.

Asheera becomes a mod i quit lol.

Well all I have seen personally from Asheera is a helpful individual.  So not sure what the problem would be, but meh.

Some people do tend to get annoying..correcting everybody on every little thing.  Or finding threads they don't like and then posting on how they dislike it constantly. Things like that.  Trying to help somebody is one thing, constant critization is another.

I think it's a matter of attitude. I think all members are allowed to - and ought to - be helpful to noob members who maybe don't know their way around the community - I don't see that as backseet moderating, and if that's also part of the moderator duty, it saves me time I can use better elsewhere. I think people leaving positive feedback to a post (like saying it's hillarious or great or qp worthy) is fine, it helps me, as long as they don't make a fuss if I happen to disagree and maybe don't award the qp.

My main objection is when people start trashing other members for their posting style or habits, particularly when the ones doing the trashing aren't what I'd call stellar members themselves. That has happened occasionally, and if a member is to be warned or otherwise corrected, that IS a moderator job. Of course, if people see something, they can always leave a HCM directing me to it, but otherwise should stay out of it. That's my 5 cents.

Vlaad, have you been reading my diary?

I would much prefer to see it kept to hcm or feedback threads as well. Any time members start posting offtopic in threads its generally not something I want to see, its too easy to derail a thread and have the actual topic be lost.

It all depends on what we're talking about though - any time someone's trying to help a newer member out, that's a good thing. When someone's nitpicking on someone because they don't like the way they post, or where they posted something - its a bad thing.

I agree with Alci too

Noobs dont need special treatment.
Most of us that is here got around without much help.
Of course it helps but it's not nessary.(Yea I know so what )

Many people come in here without a noob thread saying hi.
Some learn how it works on here.

If they ask for help then yea by all mean.
If they dont, then we dont have to act like they need their hand held.

Everyone is different though. I believe that helping people is a good thing. There is a balance as to when to help someone or if they should learn it on their own.
