Yeah Emp, Runemage we find to be troublesome with their attack stat especially, we both hate Runemage, but maybe we should give them a chance, they are my least favorite faction....in the duel map, levelling up, the Runemage's stats favour defense & spellpower, but you might find that majority of allocation went to defense, or majority to spellpower. Tricky, which is why I usually go for Light Magic build, then defensive formation, offensive attack also cool...

Elvin,
In Heroes V, the morale and luck stat maximise at 5, but is this for the hero stat or the creature stat? I ask because a hero stat could be 5 but a creature stat say 6 for morale.....

No matter what the stat says it cannot give above 50% chance for luck/morale to trigger. But I do not remember if the retribution bonus is similarly capped, it has been a long time

Been doing a bit of homework on runemage with map play, a bit different from duelling, but it does appear that luck, leadership, defense, light is probably the strongest combo for a solid build... Elvin can you clarify if dwarven luck adds to soldiers luck in any way? You mentioned in previous post that dwarven luck bolsters runes as well, not sure how??

Meant soldier's luck. Dwarven luck is there to spoil destructive and enemy mass cleansing

Yes, Dwarven Luck works LIKE soldier's luck but does not add to soldier's luck. The resistance to spells is randomized like soldiers luck....

If you can frenzy/puppet them before they channel it is even better

Ps you have overlooked the most crucial dwarf skill of them all - Enlightenment

I think 3.1 gave us a duel hero editor but this has nothing to do with that thread I don't remember where you can access it, probably in the game directory.

I think it is Emp, especially with Dragon greaves artifact, they will go before hero does, and your hero will get 2 - 3 casts in before they die (maybe not against warlock), which cuold be crucial especially if you're using imbued ballista, might be the game changer right there....

hehe, not always crucial, but very often required to round things out yes

& funny I've hardly used off or def formation (not sure why they get mentioned so much in dwarf strategy) but then again runemage were the first I could easily get the hang of in duels

to enlighten or not to enlighten

In the duel map you can build a max 22 hero, still keeping on the dwarven faction, i have now played a few games trying to fine tune the build [obv enemy hero dependent].

If we look at the dwarven essentials, luck, leadership, defense, light and enlightenment with expert runelore [in no particular order], the only way to gain all skills or to sacrifice specialising within those skills?

This leads on to another question which is relevant for all other factions, would you try and fill up all skills without maximising within that skill, ie for ranger expert luck with elven luck vs just expert luck - my gut feel is that your hero will be stronger if less skills and maximising within these?

Only evil factions can get to level 22 (dark revelation being offered).

Whether going max skills or max abilities is all dependant on your faction and what faction you're up against....
Eg. orc vs wizard, expert leadership is cool, but with aura of swiftness it's even better to get to the enemy quicker, but with orc vs human, getting to the enemy quickly might not be a priority so would you go for that ability or focus on skill maxing...

Enlgihtenment is good for all factions, not just for dwarves.

The thing with dwarves that gets me, is it's a tricky faction regarding primary stats: the stats growth are all quite similiar (20%, 30%, 30%, 20%) so there is no focus, what do you focus on? Plus sometimes either defense or spellpower grow but not both (the two top stats), so eg. you focus on a magic build, and you get low spellpower and high defense! Like dwarves, only necro has the two top stats growth, defense and spellpower, but you don't mind because the growth is 30% and 45% respectively so spellpower will grow irrespective and defense is welcome with necro weak troops anyway...

maximising skills

My gut feel here is to maximise the abilities rather than trying to go for all ability slots.

Are the buffs that you receive from maximising stronger than spreading abilities, my answer YES eg: mass conf, mass slow, mass haste, master of ice/fire the list goes on

Elvin what are your thoughts?

You guys really need to specify which duel map, it appears you're playing ToH duel 1.2 where level is 21 (22 with dark revel)...
while 22 can also mean 22 skill/perk points (lvl 19 with witchcut) which is relevant for ToH duel 2.1
...more levels means more enlightenment bonus & the more skewered enlight can become in unbalancing in might v magic duels (in addition to more skill/perk points) - hence duel maps with less levels than 21 are better - I'm now used to 21/22 skill/perk points now

plus earlier version ToH duel maps did not allow dwarves to get lvl 4 or 5 dark magic spell.

Only runelore is essential, others listed are very good & one of those listed is not as important as the others

Generally, it is more choose your critical perks first, then choose the skills - maximum impact for minimal number of skill/perks.

And I've hardly ever had to worry much about runemage stat focus (except knowledge vs inferno), altho I was once worried about stats of 7/6/14/15 at lvl21 in one game vs haven (still won tho)

Azagal wrote somethin' about runemages in this thread on p8

LOL DoubleDeck already mentioned one reason for runemage not having enlight in one of the earlier pages of this thread

*shrugs*

Up to the opponent and your preferred strategy. I might sacrifice a luck or leadership level to get intelligence or soldier's/dwarven luck but there is no rule of thumb. If your strategy depends on an ability go for it. But while I can make do with advanced defense vs say academy I would never try that vs haven or orcs.

@skprimus -> Yes, the duel map referred to is ToH Duel 1.2 where level capped at 21 (22 dark rev) and dwarves/nature can't get 4th & 5th dark spells. Brilliant duel map, well balanced.

There is no perfect build except what faction you are and what faction you're up against, together with artifacts offered and spells available.
There are necessay skills against certain factions (like defense against might factions) but not an entire skill choice. There are so many choices which is what I love about heroes V.

not sure about the duel map, but on Rmg maps enlightenment skill is balanced -> main reason is that only large maps allow lvl 20+ and there are a lot of stats boosters on them -> so skills like logistics or luck/leadership are very solid choises aswell. And on extra large maps with 8 zones and with multiple stats boosting buildings in every zone  enlightenment skill is not even worth it. On lvl 20 it will give you +10 stats, logistics on the other hand will allow you to gain control over 1 extra zone - so 5 zones for you and 3 for your opponent.

So enlightenment is broken only on custom made maps that allow players to reach lvl 30 but offer not much + stats buildings.
