How to Effectively Manipulate the Interface

Hello. I am Zamfir (but I doubt this is fresh news), and I was around for almost an year. It was a good year, but sometimes why life was made harder by a lack of options in the interface.

The current interface is very good, and I like it (for that matter, HC is the best forum I ever saw), but it would be nice to be able to preview your post before showing it to the world, or to hide your online status etc.

The good thing is that most of these things CAN be done with the CURRENT interface, if you can MANIPULATE it properly.

And now we come to the thread's subject. I'll teach you some tricks to make the HC interface work for you. Are you ready? Let's go:

NOTES:

-These tricks work if you use Internet Explorer or Mozzila Firefox. The other browsers might support these tricks, but I'm not 100% sure, as I never used them.

1) How to mke 'invisible' appearances:
This allows a member to post without revealing the others he/she is online. Like most of you know, an online member has a green dot near their username.:

In our pic, Svejk, Asheera and Genu are online, while Adrius is not.

However, you can make posts without the green dot to appear. This is useful if you try to avoid somebody or if you simply feel like sneaking.

1.1) First of all, just log off (or enter HC without logging in at all):

1.2) Choose where you want to make the 'invisible' post:

1.3) Act like you have logged in. Click on the 'Post Reply' button:

1.4) Making the 'invisible' post:

:

This screen must be familiar. It's what you see when you try to make the new posts; the only difference is that the username/password boxes are empty. Normally, your username and password should be automatically written there, but you are not logged in.

So simply type your username and password there, and continue with making the post, like usual.

Et voila, we made a post, but we are still offline.

2) How to preview your post:
This allows you to view your message before posting it. It can be very helpful if you post contain many BB codes, and you want to fix all possible problems.
It's never pleasant to spend an hour making a lenghty post, only to realise it looks bad when posted.
In order to preview your post, do the following:

2.1) Copy your post:

This is what I call a complicated post.

2.2) Choose an inactive member:

The best way to choose an inactive member is to check the MemberList and choose a guy who registered eons ago and has little posts (0-25).
    I'll choose...chn_dragon.

2.3) HCM that member:

Send that member an HCM containing your post.

Be careful tough: HCMs cannot exceed 10 KBs in size. If you have a long post, you might have to scrap it.

2.4) View the preview:

And here we go:

We can view the sent HCM, and this a pretty accurate preview. This post will look the same if you post it, so now you can view what porblems should be fixed before showing it to the world.
The reason we sent this HCM to an inactive member is obvious: it's no very probable he/she'll log in anymore. An active member might be annoyed to receive such a HCM.

The neat part is that BB codes still work. You can click the links to see if they're broken etc.

Please note, however, that HCMs only last 40 days. Afterwards, they are automatically deleted.

3) The URL trick:

Mainly, this simply change the URL in order to reach a page without searching for it. Considering you know the desired page's URL, this is the fastest way. As you will see in the example, many times it's MUCH faster and MUCH more coneveniable.

This is useful if you are looking for a specific member in order to view their profile, send them an HCM etc.. Normally, you have two alternatives: search for a post belonging to that person (this can take some time in some cases), or search for the dude in the MemberList (usually, this takes even longer).
However, there is a 3rd option, the URL trick.

3.1) Search for a member:

just click on the first member you see.

As you can see, this is done very quick.

Now, let's analyze the URL code: http://heroescommunity.com/member.php3?action=viewprofile&UserName=darkmathijs. It's pretty obvious that, if we replace 'darkmathijs' with 'xyzt', we'll open xyzt's profile.
Let's say we were searching for the member Ellpo. We simply change the URL from http://heroescommunity.com/member.php3?action=viewprofile&UserName=darkmathijs to http://heroescommunity.com/member.php3?action=viewprofile&UserName=Ellpo.

That was that. Well, in the same way you can browse lists, open unexistent PPs etc.

Well, those were the tricks, for now. If you have any, feel free to share them with us.

1) My Username and Password still appear in the boxes automatically even when offline because I told Firefox to remember them

2) Or you can just send a HCM to yourself (or Startune ), and btw HCMs can be deleted you know. Just select the HCM and press Delete at the bottom of it.

3) No comment on this one, but I use it a lot.

xD the first one was pretty PRETTY obvious. Atleast I think so xD and so was the third...?
But yeah the "preview of a post" is indeed a good idea^^. Didn't think of that.

2) No, YOU delete them. IF someone didn't read your sent HCM, you can delete them any time you wish

You (aka the SENDER) can delete it until they view/read the HCM

It depends what you want to say: if you want to say they can delete your HCM aka preview, you're wrong.

If you are talking about being able to delete your own HCMs, I never ever said something about that. Ofc I was aware.

@Ash: It's a misundersanding. I never said anything about not being able to delete your OWN HCMs. I know it's possible.

I just said tose inactive members can't delete MY HCM's, because they never log in.
It's a big difference, right?

Once a member logs in and views your HCM, you'll no longer be able to delete it, and that member will be able to do it.

That's how this HCM stuff works.

But yeah if those members never log in you will always be able to delete them. But if they see your HCM you'll lose this ability. Better to send a HCM to yourself whenever you need to preview your message

Some more beginner tricks

1) If you want to copy a post with BB codes in it, just quote it and remove the [quote] tag at the beginning of it, and the [/quote] tag at the end.

2) If you want to edit a post but not appear as if someone posted something new (as it usually happens when editing a post), tick Stealth Edit when posting the message.

I've seen some people who don't know about it

3) You can delete your own posts, just tick 'Delete' when editing it.
