Poll Question:
Man vs. Woman

Ok I have been meaning to start this debate for quite some time. As anyone that knows me has figured out by now, I spend most my time here in the OSM. Being that as it may, it tends to be the real life stuff that I like to talk about most here. So chew on this one...

How many of you have heard that it is harder to raise a boy or a girl? How many of you think it would have been easier for you if you were the opposite sex growing up?

When I grew up I was faced with many challenges, much as everyone is. But would it have been easier as a girl for me? What are some things to seriously consider?

1) Boys have a "tough" roll to fill. Most of us are taught we can't cry. We have to suck it up and be men. We are expected to do the heavy lifting and tough work. There is little or no room for emotion, sharing, caring or love compared to how a girl has it growing up.

2) Girls are expected to be "flower girls" learn how to cook, learn how to clean and take care of the house. The man makes the money, you make the house! You can't go play with the boys and forget sports. Go learn how to garden or play with your dolls. Obviously of course there will always be exceptions to any of these "rules".

Where is the line drawn here and do you follow my meaning? It was VERY difficult for me growing up because of the stereotype that was placed over me. The stress this caused was nearly fatal. How was it for each of you? I would be of the opinion that in the old days it was easier to be a boy because of all the freedoms that came with it. Now in today's age I would say it is easier to be a girl because of all the support there seems to be (equal rights etc..) I could say a ton more here for both boys and girls....men and women but I don't want to drag out this starting post. Rather I want to open the floor to all of you.

List what qualities and hardships there are by contrast. Especially the ones you had to deal with yourself. Obviously this thread will succeed much more if there are some females enough here to post their thoughts.

So I ask you, is it harder to grow up as a boy or a girl? & once grown is it easier to be a Man or a Woman?

Responses:
Easier to grow up as a male
Easier to grow up as a female
Every one growing up and grown all have rougly the same struggles and chances
Easier to grow up as a male but women have it easier as adults
Easier to grow up as a female but men have it easier as adults
Easier to both grow up as a male and be a man
Easier to both grow up as a female and be a woman
No opinion either way
Other, will explain in the thread

Guys have it easier. we can struggle free from anything while women and girls have to be pretty, fend us off, do housework and either emancipate or live with some urban caveman

About the 'be a man' thing:
I never had a father (at least, I don't remember as clearly as I'd have liked, but not much I can do anyway) so I didn't have to put up with that.

First of all, I don't really have time right now to make a thoughtful post, however I must put up something before anyone decides to write "sexist" or "stereotype":

What Father said is absolutely not sexist at all. Probably a stereotype but it is one that revels the hidden parts of human nature (surely you do not possibly think that someone just "made this up" out of the blue right? it's in our nature, just as discrimination is (nature puts us to challenge and see which one is 'better', but that is not for this thread).

Ok so now to the actual thread:

I think the difficulties depends on the neighborhood you are in, obviously. Boys are usually the more selfish ones -- like to tease girls or bully others "softer" than them. Which is something I despise, to be frank, even though I did it when I was young (and I am ashamed of that ).

The way I see it --> boys tend to be more on using some kind of 'means' for getting the job done, like for example, violence. I.e violence is not an END, it is a means of achieving something.

Girls, on the other hand, are focused more on ends, and on more details than boys, who have just one goal (and use, consequently, whatever to get there, including violence). Take cooking for example: it is not just a means but also an end (the food). Violence, on the other hand, is only a means to an end. The "end" in the boys' case is distinct from violence -- it could be something completely unrelated. Whereas cooking, for example, is directly related to the cooked food.

Girls also tend to pay more attention to details and appreciate them (i.e more artistically inclined). Boys tend to focus more on ANALYZING the details systematically so they can understand them -- usually that is partly because they want control (greedy bastards they are ), or because they feel at ease when they KNOW something won't just happen out of the blue, and thus feel secure.

As much as I was a boy, I am actually inclined towards a girlish thinking -- I do consider most of what a boy does on the blink of an eye, however, those are only mostly used from my 'male' viewpoint to an end still put up by girlish thinking. Girls also tend to be more peaceful (less wanting domination for example) which I admire, probably because they have the matern feelings that you should care for others other than yourself -- or your own power.

That said, I do analyze and like power like a man but not for myself, so for me the male mentality is just a MEANS for an end that is set up by 'female' mentality. Therefore I am a LOT more girlish than boyish

I don't want to sound harsh, death, but your post is reiterating girl - boy mentality...

The thread is about what's harder: to grow up as a boy or as a girl. Now, i know that boys live in a hierarchal system (the toughest or most cunning boy IS the leader), while girls live more or less in a republic or democratic system... (all are a pack of chittering birds who don't care about hierarchy)

so yes, boys face more bullies than girls...

At that age, it's just discrimination or "showing to his buddies that he is capable of beating the girls" or crap like that

Boys have it easier from my POV, but I haven't the inclination to write a Death-quality novel at this hour of the night explaining why I think so.

As for the bullying thing... so many who would have tried to bully me three years ago are now genuine friends. So that psyche (around me) has faded with time and circumstance. Don't try to generalise this sort of thing, it all depends on the individuals... not just their gender

Blah, society is way too corrupted and 1 sided for us to have this war. We have to many sterotypes and a past of domination to really do have this war.
If we managed to wipe the world back to ground zero and let a clean society free of all past discrimination run we could have this war.

Uhm, are we still living in 1700?

I dont know any woman that stands in the kitchen and only cleans etc. Parents here share the work.

Its easier to grow up as a boy. I never experienced "suck it up", rather I was raised/am raised (im 13) as "Be nice, never fight, help other people".

Girls have it much harder. There are more emo girls then emo boys.

But then that might depend on your country. In Sweden, man and woman are equal. My mum has been the boss several times, and she is still very high "ranked" on her current work/job.

I also have to say that my 5yr old little sister is much more agressive and sinister then me

I hated characters like Emil (its a character that Astrid Lindgren has created, you know the dead lady that made Pippi etc) because he always did bad and sinister things to annoy his dad etc.

I love cooking, baking etc. And dont have any problem cleaning or washing. I would glady be nanny for my little sister when my mum is going to the bar and meet some guy etc.
Also I love children, my grandmother is a childminder, her kids are just so cute and I love to go there and watch over them and play with them.

Getting kids is my absolute dream and final goal in my life. I would like two girls, they would be called "Freja" and "Nova", or "Freja" and "Elvira", depending on what my partner would think.
Of course I would love my children if I got boys too.

Does that make me a girl?

Okey, I also played The Sims 2 for a while (when I was 10 or 11) and created my future family.
It was me, Freja/Elvira, Nova and my girlfriend Cecilia. I had blond hair and glasses. I had not done laser surgery.
I lived in a white beautiful house.

Well, in my country you are not raised very masculine. I dont see anything wrong with doing such things.

WE DO NOT LIVE IN 1700!!!

I also played the mum barbie with my cousins when I was 4-7 years old or something.

There are different kinds of guys and different kinds of girls. Not all guys or girls are raised to be a certain way. There are macho guys and (a few) macho girls, nerd guys and nerd girls, girly guys and girly girls. Bah. The question should be whether it's easier to raise a macho, a nerd, or a flowery person.

Society's girl gender, not a girl. The real difference betwhen man and women don't exist in a heavy degree, the physological difference is big due society. Do i need to start up on makeup trends?
Blah, here in Norway we are going towards it. We even have lots of metrosexuals
Xerox is on the right track, being himself instead of being his gender. Or alteast that is how it can be phrased.

Then again, if we had a society that was pure and completely untainted: What would the situation in that class be?
The difference is there, but its really small compared to what society wants us all to belive.
