Or to put it even more bluntly, Xp's minimum requirement is a lie. Running poorly and slow is not running properly.
No it's not a lie, but that's for a clean install without any drivers or other startup programs that take a lot of RAM.

No drivers and no progras?! Why even bother with using the PC in the first place? Sorry but i think its wrong to list those specs, i think the minimum specs should be "Running and not crippled slow"-specs.

Because Microsoft can't give specs for all the different drivers and programs out there It varies from PC to PC.

Say what you will, but when XP finishes loading up (before I launch any other programs), it just uses up 95 MB. Of course, I don't have any extra junk running in the background, just Norton Firewall, which takes up 10.5 MB. So really my XP only uses up 84.5 MB.

How much would Xubuntu use in a comparable situation?

Ugh....

Couldn't you just get a live CD and try the Operating System out without actually installing it? I think that's what the live CD is for.

meh

a live cd wouldn't work for him... cause it would run slow (due to drive speed) and then he would complain that linux is slow

as for how much memory it would use... depends on a crapload of factors... most importantly what the desktop environment is... but i say this again, amount of memory used isn't an indication of performance, linux in general loads more stuff on memory

The other thing is that most likely it will use less memory... Why don't you install it and let us know?

And mvass, you don't know what you want. That's what the "no comment" was for.

I might install it. How do you do a drive partition?

As for what I want, I've already told you: Internet, Word, Excel, and games.

Internet - I can just keep using Firefox.

Word, Excel, etc - AbiWord, etc.

So that's no problem. But as for games, I'm not sure. Exactly how well do they work under Wine? I'll post a list of my games:
Absolution (Doom 64 for PC, based on Doomsday engine)
Blood
Civilization 3 + Play the World
Doom 95
Duke Nukem 3D for Windows
Half-Life (which I often play over LAN)
HoMM 1 (runs through DOSbox, which I can just keep using)
HoMM 4
Might and Magic 8
Prince of Persia (the original, runs through DOSbox)
Prince of Persia 2 (the original, runs through DOSbox)
Quake
Quake 2 (which I sometimes play over LAN)
Quake 3 Arena (which I sometimes play over LAN)
Shadow Warrior for Windows
SimCity (the original)
Starcraft
Warcraft 2
Warcraft 3

games...

quite a few of those games have native linux versions that run far better than the windows ones (Quake* being a good example)

for the rest... WINE AppDB

if its "Silver" or better, you can play it

I don't play on Battlenet much. I mostly play single-player. And yeah, it's pretty slow. I have to set everything pretty low. And I'll probably keep my XP for games. However, that doesn't leave me with much room - my Games, Windows, Program Files, and Documents and Settings folders add up to 13 GB. With extra stuff here and there, that leaves me with about 3.5 GB of free space.

Is it even worth trying?

Bottom line mvass, if you don't experiment, you will not figure out what you miss. Don't want all the solutions beforehand. Try to explore something new. And as of your current situation, wait until you get a better computer or spend those 20$ and buy an extra small drive.

Anything by Blizzard runs. Quake got a native. DosBox exists for Linux also so no problems with that. Doom got a native(also rated platinium). HoMM 4 should not run much worse than Homm 3(runs perfectly!).
Civi 3, look at the instructions. Gold = RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking at wikipedia you could try Micropolis if Sim City fails(Sim got opensource last year, a rebuild of it. Due GPL it cannot be called Sim City so ).
And last: Half Life. With exception of 1.3 which is Gold, all is Platinium.

Doing partitioning is pretty easy. I would do 100mb to swap, and the rest to "/"(root). When you get to that point in the installer i think its pretty straight forward. Get the games over to some portable medium or a other computer for a few seconds then throw em back in after installing Wine.

If you *really* think there is a chance that Xubuntu may be to slow throw in this: http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/downloads. The Lite version(less on the CD, less bloat litteraly). If you wonder its Ubuntu with Openbox as enviroment(lightweight).

How much space (on the hard disk) does Crunchbang take up?

And regarding disk partitions - how do you do one? And if you want to delete the partition, does that work easily and without errors?

Actually, I think the more RAM you have, the more XP uses at startup to load some things faster probably (although it may free the memory when needed for heavy loading applications). And since mvass has low RAM that's why it uses only a little. As I said, I just *think*, not 100% sure, but from my experiences that's how it is. When I had low RAM it used a lot less than how it uses today when I have 2 GB (well, I also have ZoneAlarm loading at startup now, but come on... from ~100 MB to 200+ )

Can I play Heroes on Linux? Cause, if I can, I might get rid of crappy Windows.

I thought Half-life had native port

@mvass: seriously man get a bigger hard disk -- not to mention your current one may have been used a lot and may crash sooner than you think

there are tools you can use to make an exact copy of a hard disk onto another but you probably won't need that if you go with Linux or a clean reinstall.

EDIT: if you have cash to burn and don't need a lot of memory you can get a SSD (solid-state drive) instead of a harddisk. Faster, MUCH more durable, will last ~10 years if used a lot (it has a maximum write-cycle capacity on a per-bit basis unfortunately) and a lot more otherwise. But it's a lot more expensive (per Gigabyte) than a harddisk. Here 128GB SSD is around 300$
