I love H2 and H3. Didn't play much of the H4. But what is great about H5 for me, are the races. I think they are all better planned than in the prevoius versions. Every castle is more or less consistent now.

I'm no computer Geek or anything, but i have bad memories of people who worship H3, and defiling evry other Homm Part (Especially H4)
The Truth was... Homm3 was Imbalanced Sorry, but Try to beat Castle with Fortres or Inferno. I mean yeah you dont have super extra balanced armies here too but its headding the right way

Personally, I never really liked H4. I couldn't get into it, for the most part. And as far as I did get into it, the thing that bothered me most were the graphics - on the adventure map, but even moreso on the battle map. Also, I missed the upgrade ability on creatures and disliked the "choice" factor. This was especially so when you captured towns and had those choices already made for you.

What I disliked especially in the campaigns was that the AI usually had some backdoor that quickly led from his main castle to yours (so he could surprise you every turn with a powerful army at your doorstep), while you had to struggle through the entire map to reach his.

Truth be said, I do have both expansions (I got a deluxe edition last year), but never played them, so perhaps things improved there.

H4 is hard to compare to H3 or H5, really. H3 and H5 look a lot more like eachother.

However, H3 is really iconic in nature. The adventure map is built up of tiles that can be interacted with, one way or another. All the items and the like are icons that may or may not be temporary (resources/artifacts/creatures that get picked up, windmills/dwellings/sites that you can visit each time). In H5, the map is a lot more dynamic and realistic. This also counts for the battle field.

To be honest, I like the Armageddon's Blade campaigns best (with The Festival of Life being at the top, closely followed by the Wizard campaign); the original H3 campaigns don't match up to that, you can clearly see how the expansion campaigns have stepped up to a higher level in design and look. I did start the Shadow of Death campaigns, but got tired of all the Undead all the time, in every mission ...

I like the gameplay of H5 a lot, moreso than H3, but yes, I do miss the little things that made H3 so great. The flavor texts (both on artifact pickup as well as storytelling) really did more to immerse you into H3, than it ever did in H5. Not to mention that H5's storyline just plain sucks at several points. Still, hard to make a choice between 3 and 5. I'm currently playing 5, haven't played 3 in a while.

I find now why I consider H3 having better atmosphere, and I enjoyed much.Because, you know, having the first TBS game (which you really like it) is a nice thing. Then, enjoying the H3 when I was a kid, then having H2,which was also enjoyable (I like the H2 music the best,it's a bit chilish, but it's still very nice). And then H4,which wasn't very good as his predecessors, but can't say it sucked much, well I've played it only 2 months because a problem happened, but well that's another story.
I mean, when you played 3 games from the same style, you will got bored to play more, but I'm enjoying H5 because it has very new good elements (most strategy ones),but I can't say that I'm jumping all the room while playing it,like what I was doing when I was a kid and playing H3

What I dislike most from H5 compared to 2 and 3 is the maps. Heroes 3 but especially 2 had a huge number of impossibly great and imbalanced maps... I loved that . On the other hand I adore H5's great range of skills and abilities and I wouldn't be bothered at all if Nival increased their number even more.
What makes H3 much more mysterious has all to do with our age (we were younger then ) and the use of less bright colours. H5's all flashy and spectacular with its spells and heroes leaving poofpoof-clouds behind them after having walked. Cool for sure, but so fantasy-like that you don't really feel involved anymore. You don't feel as if you're actually there, in a complete different world, like I used to in the old days.
All I can say is that the gameplay's become more and more interesting and that I'll stay a loyal heroes fan as long as they keep the familiars in play.
