When the carriage stopped at the town, the people stared at it, like it was some royalty. Wulfstan exited it, inhaling the local air, but again a stench of sweat, dung and unwashed bodies reached his nose. With his furs and all he looked more of a barbarian from ancient times, rather than a noble. He glared at the peasants angrily, and with his double colored eyes, the effect was even greater. He walked over to the inn, from where laughter was heard. As Wulfstan entered, the laughter stopped. Everyone stared at the stranger, but quickly turned their eyes away when Wulfstan showed them the hilt of his blade. The drunks clearly didn't want to mess with a pissed off stranger. He sat over the table at the corner, and doused the candle that was lit on it. A young barmaid walked near him, carrying a plate with empty goblets.
- What'll be sir?
- Mead.- His voice was ice cold, if not colder.- What's the choise on the meals?
- Today we have steaks and some stew.
- I'll take the steak. Make it half cooked, with blood.- He handed her a few gold coins.
- Would you like to rent a room for the night?
- No.
The barmaid walked away. Wulfstan saw her whispering something to the innkeeper. Frankly, he didn't cared.

Sabastian dropped the unconscious man, it had taken awhile, and a lot of pain..but the man had told them everything they needed to know.  Unfortunately, this was not something they could handle alone.  They would need help, and probably lots of it.  Turning to his most recent ally, he makes a suggestion.  "I think we need to part ways.  I will keep searching for more clues here, perhaps you should take the information we gathered and try to gather allies."

He pauses and looks at the number of bodies around.  "Should anything happen to me, look under that tree there.  All the information I have found will be buried under it."

Wulfstan finished his meal, and washed down the awful taste of animal blood with mead. He throwed another gold coin to the inkeeper. Several thugs noticed that. If a  weathered traveler has a single gold coin, then he definetely has more. Wulfstan went near the woods. He knew that he was followed, and gripped the hilt of his sword. The thugs made their move. One of them jumped towards him. A silver slash crossed the air and the thug fell with a gruesome vertical wound. Wulfstan grabbed one by the throat and sanked his fangs into the neck of another thug. His body was filled with new strenght. The rest of the robbers literally froze from fear. Wulfstan dropped his victim and raised his sword again. The light and graceful blade cutted through the rags and flesh of the thugs, leaving deadly wounds. The robbers fell, one by one, with fear frozen on their faces. Using his metal claws, he desecrated his victims corpse, leaving no trace of the biting marks. He cleaned his blade and went to a nearby gypsy campsite, from where songs and laughter was heard.

Gypsys playing

Somewhere in the Balkans

15 colorfull housewagons placed in a semi-circle, with tents stretched out from them. Cooking fires spread out within the wagons and a large bonefire in the middle. Song, usic and dance are heard from the distance. People of different age, gender and size dressed in colorful exotic clothes are seen all over the campsite. Talk and laughter. Horses are grazing and dogs are barking. This is their camp. The hunted and unwanted people. The traveling people, the cursed people. The Gypsys.

Song and music

Sherrashad "Kadin" Esmeralda sits in her tant watching over them. Her clan, her blood, her people. She smiles thinking on the fact that they need her. Seek her knowledge, guidance and protection. that they call her their mother. Indeed, she is their mother. Mother to everyone one of them. And like a other she leads them and protect them from harm. around her sits 6 other gypsys. Though gypsy by blood, their skin is somewhat paler than the rest. Their eyes and faces colder and harder. They are the cold ones. Nightwalkers and bloodsuckers of the Clan of Ravnos. Sired by sherrashad they are her first-born children. Her kin, her family. The protectors of the clan.

Suddenly Sherrashad rises and walks out of her tent and towards the entrance of their camp. Her children follow her closely. All others grow silent as they watch the family pass by, and then follow their matriarch's gaze towards the gap.
-Come closer kindred. Sherrashad speaks out to the darkness. There's no need to fear. You're both safe and welcome to this gypsy campsite. But beware, for this camp and it's people are under the protection by Sherrashad "Kadin" Esmeralda and her children of the night. For we are Ravnos!

Her onyx black eyes shines and burns with motherly passion, and her voice speaks with pride and authority. Her children grited their teeth revealing sharp fangs and sharpened their claws as they heard their mother call out. The gypsys behind them emmidietly moved towards the back of the camp, gathered together. The unknown vampire stepped into the light, drenched in blood and seemingly weary of both travel and combat. Looking straight at the group of vampires uncertain of what action he should chose.

He was walking besides them in his human form, redressed and his orange hair slightly speckled with horse blood.

"Just where are we going exactly? Sure, Athens is good as any place to start i guess, but what are we doing?" said Angelito, who was still thinking of recovering the bag of gold coins he had earned for all the work he has done on the farm, and running for the hills his first opportunity.

Wulfstan looked at the woman. His hand rested on the hilt. The woman supposelly was the matriarch of the group.
- You're the matriarch? You look kinda young. No matter. I want to meet with your crone.
- Ahh... Seeking to know your fortune? How you're gonna pay?
- stones.- he threw her a small sack. When the woman opened it several thumb sized rubies fell into her hand.
- Fine. You can see her in a few minutes.- she waved her hand towards her clansmen.- come, watch our performance- she smiled. She was quite attractive for a gypsy. Wulfstan sat a bit away from the rest, concealing his face in the darkness.

-Come closer stranger! Sherrashad spoke to the traveler. Sit closer, I want to see your face as we talk. She positioned herself right on front of him so that they could look directly into each others eyes. Her children beside her. Now we eat, now we drink. Rest, dance and sing. Later you'll know what the future holds for you. Come listen, look. Her voice was clear with a small touch of arabian accent.

All the others emmidietly started to play, dance and sing. Soon the sound of music and song was heard while the smell of food and drink filled the air. Colors and the blazes of the fires occupied the wiew. Then all of a sudden silence and darkness. And as it came from afar, music was heard and it grew louder and louder and small torches was lit one after another lightening up a stage. There she stood in her Belly dancer's outfit with her veil, dancing entusiasticly and seductive to the rythm.

Dancing tune

Magnificent and sparkling like a jewel from the eastern lands. Graceous in every move, she was like a buttefly in flight, like a leaf upon the wind. Passion, passion. Fiery and warm. She was burning with passion for song and dance. Unlike anything man had ever seen. All her children, all her people watched hynotized by her beauty. They were like bewithced under her charmspell. She was breath taking, even the stranger was more or less captivated by her gaze, as she alway seemed to focus her eyes on him.

Wulfstan watched the performance, clearly enjoying it, but the shade covering his face hidden his expression. The woman was graceful and seductive, yet Wulfstan didn't fall for her charm completely. He learned to resist such temptations, as he had spent several years with Ruth, who was known for her seductive ways. Wulfstan leaned back into the darkness, trying to conceal his eyes from the bright fire. The Ravnos must have learned to slightly resist the light, because they were all feeling quite comfortable near it. He grabbed a goblet of warm vine from a passing girl. The soothing warmth of the drink reminded him of sake, a japanese alcoholic beverage, made from rice. It was the only alcoholic drink that Wulfstan had during his stay in Japan. He remembered those years. Amazing architecture, honorable warriors, beautiful, diminutive women, majestic gardens and clean, fresh air in the towns. No rotting stench or plague bearing crawlers. No zealous priests and inquisition. Serenity, and a gentle sound of flute...
- Did you enjoyed it?- Wulfstan's thoughts were interrupted. He didn't noticed that the dance was over.
- Yes. It was very exciting to watch. Though I personally enjoyed Nippon's courtesans' performances more.
- What's Nippon?
- A distant land. Very beautifull. I could tell you about it more. But. Please tell me about yourself first. Then I'll tell you about me.

-Me? Yo want to know more about me and mine? Sherrashad was a bit puzzled but then she laughed. This was apparently amusing her. You have to firgive me stragner, but there aren't many who takes interest in a band of Ravnos like us. Her children giggled and chuckled around her. Very well, you shall hear our story. Or at least some part of it.

Gypsys dancing and playing

She clapped her hands, and almost emmidietly after the other gypsys came carrying dishes filled with all kinds of fruit, vegetables, nuts and soups. Roasted meat, boiled fish was just some of the courses put on a table beside them. Flagons of mead, and ale, carafes filled with wine and water was also presented. The table was made out of ebony and placed on a pesian carpet surrounded by small silk pillows. When all the preparations was done the eight vampires placed themselves around the table. Sherrashad and the strabgers sat in front of each other, with the others flanking them.
-Come, let's eat. And I'll tell you our story for entertainment.

Gypsys playing in the backgroun

-I am Cassandra "Kanid" Esmeralda, clan matriarch and mother the the vampires around you. How i got the name "Kanid" is of no importance, neither is the event surrounding my embracement. Sherrashad said, clearly pleased by her her companions hunger. I came to the Balkans across the sea from Istanbul, where i had spent many years of my human life. I was a passenger aboard a merchant ship, my possessions where some chests filled with treasures i had acquired during my human life. She stopped to drink some wine of a cup. As they dined the vampire, known as Wulstan noticed that all the dining service was made of gold.

-As I was out for a walk after lodging myself at an inn one night. She continued. I came across a group of slavers encircling some gypsys they had captured. Maybe it was my own gypsy blood crying out, or out of pity for the fate they was about to suffer, i don't exactly know. She grew silent a moment as she watched the other gypsy while they tended their meals amongst other things. Anyway, i couldn't just walk away leaving them to their fate so i approached the slavers and bought the. All of them, then i lead them outside the city where i set them free. Most of the thank me before running away but some, some chose to stay. Said they wanted to follow me where ever i might go. So They did, all around town. So i bought a couple of housewagons and some horses and then we set out on the road.

Continued music

-While we traveled, we came across gypsys in similar situations. So i helped them and with the same result. Some went away after thanking me, other stayed and wanted to join me. So our numbers grew and it wasn't long before others came and joined us after hearing rumours of a gypsy matriarch offering protection for her people. At this point she laughed and her children smiled. You can't even imagine what kind of expression i had when i learned about the rumours of me spreeding all over the balkans amongst the gypsys. I couldn't believe it and was quite furious, but i couldn't turn down or away the one who came to me for my protection. It was also clear to me that if i was to help them, i needed more kindreds. It was to much for me to do alone.
Again she paused to eat and drink.

"I will do as you ask, lorhd. May fate crhoss ourh paths again in the futurhe."

Joseph mounted his horse and rode into the woods. It was sad he had to leave such a powerful tool behind, but it was probably for the best. Dealing with madmen for a long time is far too risky. Besides, in time Joseph learned to understand when it is time to let things go. He survived an encounter with an exceptionally powerful Sabbat and used him to quickly acquire information that might have taken him months to gather piece by piece on his own. He got enough out of this one.

The problem before him, however, was much more interesting and much more complicated. Lord Dracula... Joseph went over everything the vampire hunter told them in his head. A ruthless, idealistic ruler bent on destroying the vampires... even though he was one himself now. Where is the gain in this? Should Joseph join him? Him being a Caitiff could actually help this time as it would serve a good reason for him to hate the other kindred and hunt them along side Dracula. No, that wasn't wise. In his own way Dracula was even madder than the shadow manipulator Joseph left behind. Should he try and join him, the crazy ruler would probably use Joseph while he can and kill him afterward. The gain may have been high, but the risk of becoming the puppet rather than the puppeteer was too great for Joseph's taste.

However, the appearance of Lord Dracula signified a time of change and many things could be gained in such times of turmoil. Joseph could not let this opportunity to slip away. But how to exploit it? Logic dictated that if one cannot join Dracula one must fight him instead. But how? Dracula was too powerful even for that Sabastian fellow, there was no way poor old Joseph Steinman could stand up against him. And even if by some miracle he manages to do it, what will he gain? The memory of Sabastian reminded the old Caitiff something he said: "Word is that somebody is now hunting us, the hunters.  I can not allow that to continue." Of course! The "noble ones" treasure their status so dearly the mere existence of a renegade kindred makes their frozen blood boil! If one should dispatch that abomination he could get recognition despite his thin blood.

So the question is now not "Why?" but "How?". How indeed... the Lasombra mentioned allies. But even if Joseph joins forces with other kindred they will just get all the glory and the lowly Caitiff will be cast away as usual... unless none of them survives... Yes! That could work. All Joseph needed to do was to find some "allies", meat shields, cannon fodder, fools that would get him close to Dracula and die trying to kill him... regardless of whether they succeed or not. Then the nobles will have no choice but to recognize Joseph, the only survivor, as their savior. It would be perfect. Joseph smiled, now that the plan was ready, all that he needed were some tools that would get him to power.

A strange sound disrupted his thoughts. It sounded like music. Gypsies! Joseph smiled again, "luck favors the strong" and tonight he as strong as ever.

After quite a long walk the odd group went into town.

As they were walking down the cobbled side streets of Athens Angelito spotted a man hanging from a loading crane, his hands dangling freely as the man frantically struggled to upright himself. A group of janissaries were laughing at the man, whose face was reddening by the second.  The man was shouting things of how they were stripping them of their religion. The crowd was avoiding the scene as he, Agrelius and Sevati were. They left man to his fate as they continued to walk to the marketplace where there would probably be some tavern to accept them.

Angelito bitterly thought of the money they would spend. But he bit back his rage.

- I see. Well Cassandra, it seems you had an interesting life as a human. My human life... When I look back at the past... Memories erupt. I held the title of Baron. I never liked the luxury, so I spent most of the time traveling. I saw magnificient lands where stout honorable people live. Wonderfull and prosperous lands. Even the riches of Arabian emirs and sultans blank before the majesty of the East. At first the people appear barbaric, yet it's the wrong impression. Their traditions and customs differ from our own. Their warrior caste- samurai, takes the upper hand in society and the will of their emperor is spoken through the lips of the shogun. At first, I was their prisoner. But I adapted. I learned. And after several months I was my new lord's most trusted vassall. This blade- Wulfstan removed the holder of his sword, but didn't drawn it out completely, but showed only several inches of it. Moonlight reflected on the naked blade giving it a silvery glow.- was a gift from him. It is considered the greatest honor if the lord gifts you his swords.
- why you didn't drawn it out completely?
- This blade is fully drawn when I only need to kill someone.- he returned it to it's proper place. Wulfstan then dranked a bit of his vine.
- And honor is above all else in their culture. The samurai even perform ritual suicides if they can no longer bear the shame. They are interesting people. They live in a small chain of islands, yet their numbers are so vast that they could overcome the ottoman plague. Yet something tells me that their reign will be shortlived.

Gypsys plays, sings and dances in the background

-Really? How intriguing. Sherrashad spoke softly almost whispering like to a lover. What a fascinating people and country it most be. As for my human life, well let's just say most of it was spent with boredom in Istanbul. I was allready embraced by the time i returned to the Balkans you see. She let out i deep sigh as she tought of her past and mortal life. Where were I again? Oh yes, I had just begun gathering yself a clan with no one to help e protect them. Oh those where really troublesome times. What headaches my human friends caused me during those days.

Her eyes glimmered and she got a distant look, like wasn't present but rather elsewhere in a different time. She grew silent as past memories flashed before her inner eye. Suddenly she seemed so so tired and lonely. Uncertain as to what to do. Like a helpless young woman. The gypsys started playing a softer, sader tune.
-I don't know for how long it went on. She said silently. Without the flames of passion and cheerfulnes she had showed only minutes before. The road seemed so endless, the days cold and dark. It was like I saw no meaning with our journey, no goal. I just went on, each passing day the same as the next one. It was then that I saw them. Two women in the trench. Ragged, beaten and bloody. They just layed there weary of life, left to die. The Two women on her sides both grew silent is they heard their mother telling the story. Pain, sorrow and agony filled their faces.
-So I took them in, cleaning and feeding them before putting them to bed. Then as I was sure they was comfortable and nearly asleep I embraced them. It was cruel of me, I know that. But you must understand I was so lonely I couldn't stand bearing it anymore. I needed company of my own kind. And it was easier to embrace two lone strangers no one knew, than some of those who followed me, breaking their thrust and love for me. Pain, lots of pain shined in her eyes and she seemed so poor, Wulfstan almost felt sorry for her and almost wished to comfort her.
-Oh the screams. The horrified, screams. The frightened looks in their eyes, their pleads of mercy. Their desperate struggle. It almost broke my heart and I wavered, letting them escape. But I din't. Instead I completed the process and wathced over them as they changed. And when the woke up I called them my friends and lead them to my camp, teaching them the responsibility they now shared with me. And they accepted it somewhat reluctantly. But in time in time they came along with their new life and duty. They even began calling me mother and we grew closer as a family. A sad, unpleasant smile formed upon her lips. Remorse played upon her face. She even shed a few tears, really regretting the brutality of her deed.

Another soothing tune played by the gypsys

As he turns around, he notices an old gypsy woman, her hair almost completely white, her facial features sharp as the blade of a knife, and the look in her eyes gentle yet brimming with authority. Before he manages to respond, she continues. "Your life has been a troubled one, your undeath no better. Your soul has suffered as few have, but the greatest pain is yet to come..."

"I came seeking my fortune, woman, not misfortune... And my future, not the past," Wolfstan responds.

"Interrupt not the crone that way, traveler..." Sherrashad tells you, her eyes barely revealing the slightest notion of reproach. "For it is said that in order to truly understand her words, one must need to have the cunning of a fox, the wisdom of an owl, and the patience of an oak."

The crone smiles. "And the desperation of a hungry wolf, and at least that is what you have, traveler... Come to my tent, I shall open my cards for you, should you allow me to test your patience further."

Wulfstan followed the crone to her wagon. The plaque on it read "Madame Aegyptos". Inside the wagon was full of majestic rugs, strange alchemical devices, which some of them created puffs of silvery mist. Parts of beasts, some of which were unknown to Wulfstan or maybe even the rest of the world were hanging around the shelves or were marinated and stored into jars. Mummified heads were hung at the edge of one of the shelves. The old crone sat behind a table covered by finest silks. She glared at the crystal ball for a few moments. The ball showed dark clouds, and Wulfstan could sworn that he saw a forest of stakes, with people impaled on them, with crows feasting and nesting on their bodies. The crone pointed at a pile of several pillows, asking Wulfstan to sit down. After he sat, the woman picked up the tarot cards, and looked at Wulfstan. Her face was covered in darkness, despite a black candle lit on the table.
- Well, let's see what the cards say about you nomad.

She opened the cards routinely but carefully, laying one by one on the desk.

After turning a few of them over, she reshuffled the cards and did it all again, frowning more and more with each card drawn.

Finally, she laid three cards, face down, in front of Wolfstan.

"Pick one."

Wolfstan showed the one on the left.

"Judgment..." the Crone said before even lifting it. Indeed, it was the Judgment card.

Three new cards were laid.

Wolfstan picked again.

"The emperor..." Shuffling. "Now pick for the last time."

The travelers finger ended on the middle card, and now it was him that proclaimed: "Death."

The crone turned over the card. The grim reaper eerily grinned at them from the neatly drawn picture.

"Death's always the last one," Wolfstan said.

The crone smiled for a second, but the smile soon faded away, as a shade suddenly fell over her face. "You are to travel to Wallachia - the land of death itself, where the cursed emperors of the underworld battle for dominion in every forsaken hill and forest and village... There you shall exact judgment, or judgment shall be exacted upon thee - either case, it is there that you shall find your destiny."

"I shall find destiny wherever I go... But what of peace?"

"That I cannot promise. Your trials in this world are far from over, nomad. But destiny, yes... your destiny will lead you there, but only if you choose to find it. Destiny is an intriguing thing. Especially yours."

The nomad nodded and stood up.

"You have been helpful, old woman. I shall seek out this land, as you have prophesied. What awaits me there I neither know nor care; all shall reveal itself in time."

As he turned around and headed for the exit of the tent, he heard the crone's final question.

"Do you truly wish for peace, Wolfstan?"

The curtains of the tent floated on the chilling night breeze as he left the tent in silence.
