Joseph watched the duel from a safe distance. As far as his keen senses could tell the hunter was alone. Imbecile. A human should never go alone against a kindred, unless he has some powerful magic or holy abilities. However, in his idiocy the hunter was of great service to Joseph: he revealed an important side of Wulfstan's personality - honor. Joseph never understood the meaning of it, for him honor code was just a bunch of rules that bind one's hands. On the other hand, Joseph did come across many people with honor and he learned that although most of them are dangerously incorruptible they are also quite easily manipulated and betrayed if one knows what he's doing. And Joseph always knew what he was doing. Still, there was no room for premature celebration. This Wulfstan Von Corphen already proved to be no naive fool. Caution was in order.

Joseph came out from behind the carriage and approached his companion. He looked down at the fallen hunter as he spoke:

"It seems that aparht frhom the petty thieves this one came to face us alone. Foolish, yet brhave and worhthy of admirhation. I hope you did not mind that I did not help you in yourh battle with him. I could have done so, but I did not want to interhferhe in yourh duel. If I was wrhong, I apologize." Joseph looked at Wulfstan as he said those words and bowed his head slightly. He then looked at the hunter again, "It is a pity that we do not have the time to give him a prhoperh burhial. The dawn is apprhoaching and we should get to a safe place beforhehand."

- The peasantry will find him in the morning, and mourn him, as a victim of the marauders. The poets shall write a poem about a man who killed all of the thieves before he fell. He seemed to be a good man, yet the pope's lapdogs misguided his life, which ended at the edge of my blade.- He looked at the corpse for a few moments.- At least he gave us a weapon to use against Dracula's army. this contraption, as I understood, fires bolts at great speeds, with no need to reload.- Wulfstan showed Joseph the drum. it was made from oak, and a light metal, which Wulfstan haven't seen before.
- This is it's quiver. This mechanism must be a new invention of the Inquisition.- He looked at the sky. Soon the first rays of the new day will lighten up the land.
- The carriage is protected from the rays of sun, but before we depart, there's one more thing to do.- Wulfstan walked around the carriage seeing the onconsious marauders.
- Impressive. But these dogs have witnessed our power. They may tell the clergy what they saw, and since I'm a Caitiff, and the princes care little for me, I'll be having a trail of hunters on my back. It surprises me that a Ventrue would travel along a kindred such as me.- He pointed at the marauders- These filthy rats do not deserved to die in honor.- Wulfstan walked around, and sliced their throats, and stabbed their chests.
- Im no Ventrhue. I'm Caitiff as well.- Said Joseph. Wulfstan lifted his left eyebrow.
- Are you jesting?
- No.
This simple, yet truthfull answer was all Wulfstan needed. How could he miss that? A Ventrue jew? Joseph's people were hated in Europe for their beliefs and culture in all times. In Japan there was a similiar "caste" of people. the people who disposed of the corpses of the deceased cattle. in the normal society they were adressed to as "They". Even peasants, they had more recogniction than "They". The rest of the Japanese society shuned and looked upon them in disgrace.
- Interesting then. Dargir?- He looked at the ghoul. He was an old man with snow white hair and a long beard which was tied into six plaits.
- Yes Milord?
- When you're in the town, find us some victims. scum that no one would miss. local drunks or so. make up something. I believe that the next night will be picht black, with little light provided by the moon. use that.
- Of course Milord.
- Now, Let's get to rest. Dargir here will bring us to a nearest town. maybe there will find some cannon fodder to fuel our cause. If the Ancestors bestove their blessing on us, maybe we'll find a strong ally or two.
Wulfstan entered the carriage, thinking about everything he has expierienced in his life, both mortal and undead. He wondered if Ruth, the artistic aristocrat is safe, and thought what she has found in a savage vagabond such as Wulfstan. He remembered Mariko, the woman that was appointed as his concubine and teacher, and their son Omi. by now he must be a father himself. Wulfstan dreamed about returning to them countless times, as thay were the only family left to him, but seeing as he's now a prowler of the night, it seemed very unlikely to do so. Sometimes Wulfstan wanted just to wait for a sunrise, and then commit a sepukku. But this time wasn't good enough to think about himself. One thing the crone made crystal clear. If Dracula lives, there may be no rest. For anyone.

Joseph couldn't believe his fortune. His first companion in this "quest" is a Caitiff as well. When he learned this he did not hesitate for a second to reveal his own heritage. While Joseph himself did not hold any sentiments for other unfortunates, he knew that the Caitiff tend to stick together when possible, simply because they have no one else to lean on. Which would mean that gaining the trust of Wulfstan Von Corphen just became a lot easier. There was also the matter of the betrayal. If Wulfstan would not drop his guard until the end, which seemed plausible at the moment, Joseph may not need to kill him anyway, since it is doubtful that one Caitiff will overshadow another. That being said, the nobles might be more reluctant to express their gratitude to two Caitiff instead of one. Joseph mentally shook his head. He was getting carried away, the end of this journey was still out of reach and even he could not plan that far.

Joseph walked over to the carriage.

"If that is the case then I suggest we get inside and get moving. The longerh we stay herhe, the morhe chances we take at being found in the midst of the massacrhe. And I believe that none of us wants that kind of attention, norhe frhom the humans and norhe frhom ourh full-blooded cousins."

- I'll tell you one thing Joseph. I'm not chasing glory. I don't care what the princes will say about the two of us. To me, this quest is just another battle. When it's over, our paths will separate. Mine will lead me to the east. If you want, you can have all of the glory to yourself, I don't care.

- I don't think that they gonna rhewarhd us. Rhathrher they'll kill us beforhe the news sprhead.
- Better to vanish silently before they'll get to us.
- wherhe is that serhvant of yourhs? I thought that he should be herhe by now.
- He'll be here with the cattle, be sure of that.
The two vampires were talking about their quest to bring down Dracula. Meanwhile...
Dargir entered the inn, looking for victims for his temporary master.
- do you have any money, old man?- asked the innkeeper, a fat balding man with a blooded apron.
- I have few coin for a drink, and a story to share.
The barmaid handed him a tankard full of beer.
- Let's hear it then.
Dargir took a sip of his beer and started talking.
- It is said that on a night as dark as this, when werewolves stalk the woods, and the moon sheds little light on the land, the darkness spawns a nightmarish carriage, pulled by demonic steeds, as black as the depth of the abyss itself. A raven of blood guides it's path, taking whatever his master wishes. It carries two beings. The rulers of the night they are, a trickster and a warrior. The savage noble and an outcast lord. Two beings that feast on the essence of the living. Many tried to end their reign, many fell by their blades. The look of their eyes chills the blood and stops the hearts even of the bravest. It is said that whoever ends their reign, he'll be revered as a hero, and will find the treasures that the two had scattered across the land.
He finished his beer and payed the innkeeper.
- Wait for a moment. How to know when they're here?- said one thuggish man. He was surrounded by several other thugs.
- the neighing. Listen for it.

Gypsies traveling

The sun shined brightly as the 15 wagons moved along the roads of Balkans. Their spirit was high as they sang and joked, like yesterday's scared hadn't happened at all. They were all enjoying the good weather, their own comapny and their travel. All in all they seemed ordinary. No signs that they were somewhat drifferent from other gypsies. But they were different.
Cause they had a secret. A secret that no other living human must know. For in the largest wagon, the home of the matriarch, rested several night-dwellers. Immortals of the night. Creatures who like the gypsy was hunted by others. They were to be protected at al costs. So the wagon was always sealed off and closed during the day. And all gypsies were forbidden to approaching it. No one was allowed to enter and disturb their rest. Unless they wanted to end up as the vampires next meal.
But even though they were supposed to sleep to save and gather their strenght during the day, Sherrashad couldn't sleep. She was kept awake by her own thoughts. Her memories, her fears. Her mind drifted to the now dreaded lands of Wallachia, and their new lord. She shivered.

Wulfstan walked outside, and looked at the moon. As he guessed, it shed little light tonight. He thinked about his new companion. The look in his eyes changed when Wulfstan mentioned that he didn't wanted any fame nor glory.
The horses were getting restless. They neighed and moved around, like they were afraid of something. They acted as being attacked by a wolfpack. But no, these horses weren't afraid of simple wolves. Wulfstan sniffed the air. It was THAT scent. The scent of a shapeshifter. A werewolf. Wulfstan hoped that he wouldn't meet their kin, but destiny, as always played with him as it pleased. Wulfstan drawn out his sword, revealing the silvery blade. He readied to face the beast, but wasn't sure from where him, or they will strike.

Joseph sat in the carriage. Not interested in glory... He could actually believe that. Von Corphen seemed like the guy with a mission, a "noble" warrior who blindly follows destiny wherever it may take him. Did this change Joseph's plans? Should he spare the vampire and not endanger himself with an unnecessary betrayal? Or should he play it safe just in case? Hard questions... His new companion already showed that despite his shortcomings he is not a naive fool. On the one hand, it meant that stabbing him in the back might prove difficult. On the other hand, it meant that he could turn into a thread if left unchecked... One thing was certain - the end of their journey is still out of sight, so the answer could wait.

The horses have been restless for a while now. Joseph who never had a ghoul horse was used to such behavior and didn't pay much attention at first... that is, until he heard a howl echo in the night. This was not by any means a regular wolf's howl. It had much more power and hatred in it. Werewolves. Joseph's face twitched. Such inconvenience. In all his long existence Joseph managed to avoid the lycantropes so far, knowing that he doesn't stand a chance against them in physical combat and doubting his control abilities against such savage creatures.

He looked outside. Wulfstan Von Corphen already drew his swords out. That's right, Joseph wasn't alone this time. He had a powerful hand-to-hand warrior with him. It would be better to leave the fight to him and help him from afar. Joseph leaned forward trying to look deeper into the woods and his hand touched something. He looked down and saw the contraption Von Corphen looted from that hunter. He must've left it in the carriage when he got out. Joseph picked it up and examined it. It looked fairly easy to use. There was no need to reload as well. Joseph was by no means a skilled marksman, but his heightened senses and more importantly his weak telekinetic abilities would compensate his lack of training. He took the weapon in his hands and hid inside the carriage ready to shoot anyone his sword wielding companion can't take on his own.

The first pounce was sudden, and almost knocked down Wulfstan. The wolf that attacked him, was roughly the size of a bull. Several bolts flew from the carriage, hitting the beast in the ribs. Wulfstan didn't waited for long, and beheaded the beast. It rolled by his feet, shifting back to it's human form, revealing the face of a woman. Wulfstan didn't had time to think for the motives that driven her to this, as he had to defend against another werewolf who has came out of the undergrowth. This one was bigger, taller and more muscular than Wulfstan. He gripped the blade stronger, and looked at the half man half wolf. His adversary rushed straight forward at him, but  Wulfstan evaded him, cutting him in the process. The injured creature groaned with rage, and again charged at Wulfstan. This time it was stopped by Corax who aimed to peck the lycanthrope's eyes. It succeeded, partially. Blood was flowing from the creatures right side of the face. It was enraged. Several bolts were visible in it's back. Several other shifters, about the size of a calf surrounded Wulfstan. He needed to think quickly- either dispose of the lesser wolves or face the enraged and injured alpha.
