Umm, Minion, yeah.. read the f article

Quote:
Man-made is also taboo - it should be artificial or synthetic, firemen is disallowed and air hostesses should be called flight attendants.

No, it's not stupid at all!

And my comment about Oligarchy, well, guess what would happen if they actually ask their PEOPLE whether they give a DAMN about such things. I think 99% would say they should waste our money in a different way then on debates about whether "fireman" is sexist or not.

RIDICULOUS.

One speaks about the banning of words "man and woman" Lol what a topic.

As I know so far the new word is going to be "camarada", no maters if the person is female or male.

Apart from that I wasn't talking about banning the words of "man" and "women" I was against an abolishment of terms adressing the sexes individually just as it's stated in the main post.

But yeah I guess I'm the one who didn't read this thread...lol

I have read it, that is no argument mates. Here, read the article by Telegraph, it is maybe a wee bit more neutral. (and you both conveniently evaded my question again, but oh well...)

source

Give me a source for that "camarada" thing, thanks. lol.

Struan Stevenson, a Scottish Conservative MEP described the guidelines as "political correctness gone mad."

He said: "We have seen the EU institutions try to ban the bagpipes and dictate the shape of bananas, but now they see determined to tell us which words we are entitled to use in our own language."

Philip Bradbourn, another Conservative MEP, vowed to ignore the booklet, which he described as a "waste of taxpayers' money" and called on Mr Romer to reveal its cost.

He added: "I will have no part of it. I will continue to use my own language and expressions, which I have used all my life, and will not be instructed by this institution or anyone else in these matters."

Seven years ago, an attempt to amend noise laws came close to effectively outlawing bagpipes.

However, a number of bizarre EU rules remain in place, including a directive stating that every pair of rubber boots must be supplied with a user's manual in 12 languages.

Yeah, more "netural". Especially the rubber boots part.

Look, whether there IS a point of referring to women's marital status or not, it's just a big waste of money and time. And do you know one single person who would actually thought of it as "offensive"?

I know a big bunch and no, they would just laugh at the ridiculousness of the new "law".

Offensive, my ***.

Obviously no one bothers to answer Minion's question, though.

Yes, actually. In Germany the use of "Miss" has been forbidden legally a long time ago. As a woman you had the right from then on to call yourself and be called "Mrs.", no matter your marital status. The reason was, that "Miss" were, in practise and real life, treated differently than "Mrs.", simple and easy, and to the disadvantage of the "Miss".
There is nothing to discuss here, this is simple historical fact.

Not long ago they were discussing the bannas and cucumbers shapes

I have a suggestion: let's wait for comment by Ash/Pan/Mysty do they feel offended? And what's their point of view.

I can answer. No, it's not relevant.

But is it really necessary to get a big debate on it and suggest a "politically correct" form?

Those guys are paid for every hour of their work, and with all the matters at hand, they discuss what? Whether "fireman" is offensive or not?

What the?

Dude... this isn't about avoiding your question. I told you because you said I was being off topic which I wasn't. It's as simple as that. And the difference in adress made a lot of sense when it was created... men were to behave differently depending on the womens marital status it's pretty simple.
Misses were a no-go and miss was go for it!
So it's actually quite handy. It would be just as handy for men of course.

But yeah at "this day and age" it doesn't matter. It's just a question of politeness that's all. It's nothing sexist lol.

I agree with Minion and Jolly Joker. I don’t understand that we still have these absurd gender differences. It would be more acceptable if both sexes have names for their civilian status, but when it is just the woman to disclose her civil status is something wrong. All efforts to improve equality between men and women are welcome in my opinion, no matter how small they are

OK, I can understand that some feel that it might be uncomfortable to have to admit wether you're married or not whenever you start a conversation with someone. Either that or be rude? Well, then remove miss OR Mrs! Don't argue about professions! It's not like waitresses are any different to waiters in any way 'cept sex, is it? Well, and the pay. Then get the pay thing right! Then it's just a stupid idea instead of complete bull ****!

The problem here is that many names include MAN: It's somehow stupid to call a female policeman a policeman, and it's just dumb to call a man policeman and a woman policewoman. We have this kind of crap in Germany, where everything has a (male) gender. In English a judge, can be male or female, however, in German the word "Richter" is male and the word "Richterin" would be female. That makes it awkward to address them all in one word, and believe me, it sucks to always hear, something like "Richter and Richterinnen" as in Ladies and Gentlemen.

That's the deeper background for having "gender-neutral" names - and depending on the language some things are silly.

To come back to the issue - instead of "policeman" it makes sense to have a "gender-neutral" name - like cop - instead. Since you can the say, dear cops, instead ofm, dear policemen and policewomen.

And keep in mind that in German (and probably some other languages) you have that problem basically with all names not only with the man and woman thing).

@Doom. You just quoted some conservative MEP:s. They are not truth wielders, you know If the point was about the neutrality of the article, then let's not go on debating that, shall we?

And as for big waste of money and time, you are blowing this out of proportions. The booklet was complied by the chiefs of parliament, and handed out to MEP:s as a guideline. Using air hostess is misleading as they should be talking about all the people in the business, aka flight attendants. I am sure that it is not about being offended there as much as updating the language from old stereotypical jobs. If there are gender neutral terms in existence, they can be encouraged to use those. Change is not always bad.

Azagal, I never addressed your post in the first place. I meant Vokial and his "Queen is sexist" post.
