New Mass Spell Idea

This is an idea I had recently. Up until now, mass spells have been either separate from their non-mass versions (H2, H4), or upgrades of them (H3), but these have never seemed entirely right to me, and finally I've come up with an idea that I hope has some merit.

Now heroes (and other spellcasters) can cast as many spells as they want each turn, but for every cast the spell price grows by [spell level] mana so eg. Haste costs 4 mana for the first cast, but 5 for the second, six for the third etc. (right-click to cancel spell) and likewise Deflect Missile goes from 6 mana to 9 mana to 12 and so on. so now, to haste an entire army (7 stacks) in one go costs 49 mana.

I also originally thought about dropping the hero's spell power for each subsequent spell but decided that would get too expensive.

So a hero could hypothetically cast Frenzy seven times on the enemy?

Yes, if he had 17+ knowledge and was facing an enemy who didn't have much of his own magic. If the enemy, on the other hand, had the same 17+ knowledge, expert Destructive Magic, and the Chain Lightning spell then that sort of act would be suicide.

That's really imbalanced with Academy, Inferno or Sylvan who can easiliy have 17+ Knowledge. Sylvan already have a kind of "Mass Frenzy", it's Called Imbued Rain of Arrows.

Coincidence? I think not!!!!

NICE IDEA!
but the amount of mana used on the next spells should problably be higher than what you have shown for balance. I don't see balancing as our job

This spell casting system should apply only to spells that already have a mass version, then you could decrease the spell cost a bit. 50 mana for Mass Haste is devastating for a knight. (Mass Righteous Might >100mana?)
What about I cast Haste, Endurance, Righetous Might and Div Strengh only on Paladins first turn?
Magic Resistance gets put aside a bit since you can cast Confusion on Arcanes untill it works (great for Inferno, not so great for Sylvan since you're 100% sure Arcanes are out)
____________
none of my business.

This would be completely devastating for a might faction like Haven or Stronghold.

This idea is kinda weird and I think it will bring a lot of imbalances. Also btw you could also cast two different spells each turn? Will the cost also increase this way?

I'm giving this idea the Official Seal of Not Approval

It makes combat far too frontloaded. With enough knowledge a good hero could veritably decide the combat on the first turn.

Perhaps with some knowledge boosting artifact a warlock can cast 3 meteor showers and take out 90% of your army in the first turn .

What about casting multiple arcane blades to block your entire army?

I think that this would make the hero that goes first get an instant win, beause they can just do mass Frenzy or Puppet Master.

So, my opinion in NO.

I don't think this would be a good idea. Either it completely drains your mana supply and causes a spam-fest of magic at the start of every combat, or you will have to do without mass effects.

Either option doesn't sound good to me honestly, imbalancing results not even taken into concideration.

In the last magic-system I worked with, spells had 2 schools and their effect increased with a mastery-level system, generally up to master level 6. Mastery levels 1-4 would increase the effect, level 5 would create an AOE (4x4), and level 6 would give it mass effect.

3 mastery points for having the type-school skill (Light in haste's case), 2 mastery points for having the element-school skill (air in haste's case), and 1 point for a perk which specificly does that for the spell haste (and a few other spells). Complicated, I know And unsightly, it needed some tweaking.
