I'm curious - Campaigns, which one's your favourite?

I love to play the campaigns in Heroes 4 for various reasons.

I love the stories - I thinks it's a grand thing, and much better made that in Heroes 3

That might just be me of course

But my all time favourite is the one with Tawni Balfour, the pirate daughter, who becomes captain on her fathers ship. Only one reason why I doesn't play it so often, and that's because I think the first map is a bit difficult I think the story is very good, and the way you get all the flashbacks to her childhood - I love it, hehe.

Then I think comes "The Price of Peace". I really like the story, only I hate the map where Solymr is to get to the Dragon's Graveyard. But I love the one, where you only play heroes above ground and Solymr beneath. I tend to only use Emilia, Tharj and Kore (or what his name is, I don't remember), because Emilia and K*** moves on to the next scenarie, and well, Tharj is a great warrior and therefore good to use too. The others sucks a bit too much and you have to protect them all the time - annoying!

Then comes Elwin and Shaera - and yes, I fancy love stories! I don't really know whether it's equal to "The Price of Peace" in my opinion, these three are close to equal in my mind.

I don't know which one then comes, but others I like are "A Bard's Tale, only problem is that, it is to short. And I like the dead, life and babarian campaigns too in the original - Half-Dead, the True Blade and the last one - I do not recall the name.

The last ones - I don't know what to think of them. I have tried them, but I don't really like them. It is just like they had to make something and then this was it. A Bard's Tale was the only one I liked.

Tawni rulles (she is a queen after all : )

Its nice to see someone else in love with the campaigns of Heroes IV
I must say I absolutely love Tawni and Cyrca, they have the best characters. Besides them Gauldoth is very good, Waerjak and Tarnum too.
In Gathering Storm I like best the campaign with Kozuss, playing Agraynel also was great experience.
In Winds of War all the campaigns were equal for me except the last where u choose your hero and counquer all the rest.
I like some of the campaigns for the story some for the good gaming experience.

One thing I didn't like: We didn't get to see more of Lysander,Gauldoth,Tawni,Tarnum,Elwin or Emilia in the expansion campaigns, but I do appreciate them for what they are. From the original campaigns,I like them all,I really can't choose a favorite. From The Gathering Storm,I enjoyed all of them, but I guess the one with Bohb is my favorite because he's an Archmage and I could use so many spells...as for Winds of War,I've enjoyed playing with von Tarkin the most.I've wondered what the final campaign would be like, because you get to play wih all of the conquerors, and they couldn't possibly have teamed up in the last one, like in The Gathering Storm, and it was interesting to have the option  to play it with one of them. This way,you can play it five times, each time with a different hero.

I also had some little problems with that, you should find it, eventually. You searched all the map, but don't forget that stack is moving.

To all that haven't done so, I highly recommend the Price of Peace.  There is a good story, compelling quests and maps.  It's not hard and it's not easy.  When I finished I had a strong desire to sink my teeth into more Heroes IV.

Did anyone mention liking Tawni?
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=26902

Oh, I just LOVE that campaign. Especially the scenario with the flashbacks from her childhood in the bar. Tawni is my favourite character in all of the HoMM-universe, beating even Sandro and Mutare and Alamar and Tarnum and Emilia. I mean, she's so adorable When you hear that story of all her suffering, you just wanna cuddle her, and the only two problems are 1) she wouldn't let you + 2) she doesn't exist (and the latter's a real downer!)

And yeah, I was disappointed too, that GS and WoW didn't build on the HoMM4 universe: I mean, they'd gone to all that bother destroying the world & then starting Axeoth. And then just as they were getting somewhere, with the factions establishing themselves in the original HoMM 4 campaigns, they just left them there. When I had just gotten HoMM 4, before GS came out, I was really looking forward to seeing how Tawni and Lysander and Gauldoth and Emilia (my second favourite person in HoMM 4) would interact. Was really disappointed when it didn't happen in the expansions. Though the real bummer was of course, that it NEVER happened

A Pirate's Daughter... for obvious reason. The plot and characters are much more sophisticated than other campaigns. A real epic.

"A Pirate's Daughter" is definitely the best campaign, for many reasons. One is that it has the best literary quality of any. The other is that thanks to the attack upgrades of the chaos towns, Tawni becomes by far the most powerful hero of any in the original campaigns. With the Giant Slayer sword, my Tawni could kill 6 black dragons in a single melee hit, and ranged shots did over 1k damage per hit. I wish they made a unique battleground model of Tawni like they did in the GS and WoW campaigns. Map design was pretty good too and presence of large stacks constituted an actual effort to challenge your hero.

The worse campaign of the original, by design, is the Order one. Switching between two mages is quite a drag, and a lot of the maps were pointless, especially the last one.

For GS, the "Another Bard's Tale" was the favorite for me. The character model was well designed, and the character skills were also particularly fun, especially since you get GM stealth right from the beginning. Personally, I like heroes with high Scouting abilities because it makes the map take a lot less longer when you can move so much. The finale campaign was pretty good, but after the first map it was just repetitive. The final map was very repetitive, and if you built your heroes right, Hexis isn't much of a challenge at all (a few hypnotize on the Sorceresses and he's down).

Bobh's campaign was the worse in the GS pack. Not only did the name of the hero totally suck, but his skills weren't anything exciting. Since there were so many magic schools, it's impossible to really GM more than a few schools and also get their skills. Also, heros without combat skills are simply very clumsy to play. In the finale campaign, I finally got GM on magic skills, but Bobh was so incredibly weak that he was a major liability in the group. The Bohb campaign also lacked a storyline and most of the maps were pointless (just collecting magic skills stuff). In these games where gameplay is repetitive and with the difficulty impossible to really balance properly, you really need a storline.

I haven't played all the WoW campaigns, but I will say that "Mongo" the Barbarian is such a blatant ripoff of the Mongols that I had a laugh. In the second map of the campaign, you have to breach the "Great Wall" - a  blatantly a ripoff of the Great Wall of China, which was built to defend against barbarians in Mongolia. Couldn't nwc come up with anything more original?

No, quite sadly.  All of its storywriters had been fired just after the vanilla version was released since 3DO couldn't afford to pay their wages.

I love Price of Peace. Such a great story, a great story telling, but i'd just wish the last mission was harder. It was VERY easy and i'd wish Gavin Magnus wasn't so easily wasted.
My favourite character is however Gauldoth. Such an epic man... MUCH better than that arragoant fool Sandro.

The story of Price of Peace was good, but just the design was a bit poor.

I guess what the designers didn't realize in a lot of these scenarios is that to make endgame bosses competitive against the player, you must either give them a boat load of units (but this wouldn't be practical if they're free-roaming), or make them static neutral heroes so that their army grows over time (like Captain Black whose army can grow to have 100 black dragons). Creatures are totally unnecessary in this map, and if you have a hero with pathfinding, it gets done very fast. I think that in earlier versions, you can just teleport to the allied town with town gate and win in 3 days or so.

Another interesting thing is that the mind shield isn't a very significant artifact, so on some occasions, you can actually find it lying around in the map (but of course, getting non-legit mind shields don't work).
