Yo ho ho an' a bottle o' rum

So I stumbled upon this old article yesterday, and was frankly impressed.

We've all heard about some pirates in Somalia, going around hijacking ships and demanding ransoms... I don't think any of us really gave it too much thought, really. Bandits with ships and guns, meh. Some random, ship-raiding scumbags.

But now I've seen their side of the story, and their attitude and...

Damn.

There's this spokesperson of theirs, Sugule Ali, who actually agreed to give an interview. Apparently, it all started as a response of a few local angry fishermen to large fleets illegally fishing in their waters, and it continued on from there...

“We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits,” Sugule said. “We consider sea bandits those who illegally fish in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas. We are simply patrolling our seas. Think of us like a coast guard.”

In a 45-minute interview, Mr. Sugule spoke on everything from what the pirates wanted (“just money”) to why they were doing this (“to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters”) to what they had to eat on board (rice, meat, bread, spaghetti, “you know, normal human-being food”).

Mr. Sugule, after capturing a Ukrainian ship carrying tons of weapons, tanks etcetera (though they claim they didn't know it was full of weapons, but that it just looked like a big, juicy ship ) acknowledged that they were now surrounded by American warships, but he did not sound afraid. “You only die once,” Mr. Sugule said. They also said that Somalia was already ravaged enough by wars as it is, and refused to unload the weapons.

I just couldn't believe that people like this still exist. It's... I don't know, it's just fascinating in its own way. Definitely something different than what we see every day.

Read the article, it's worth it. I'm interested in other people's opinions about this...

Everyone does.
I don't think theirs is any worse than that "nukes saved lives" story constantly being tossed around.

These people are at least honest enough to admit they're doing this primarily to get cash. And ironically, they're saving the environment more than some organizations who claim they want to save the environment but are in fact doing it for cash.

When asked why the pirates needed $20 million to protect themselves from hunger, Mr. Sugule laughed and said, “Because we have a lot of men.”

I know that I could have easily been in their place, we all might have. But in my place right now I don't see them doing it for keeping the coasts clean, at least not anymore But as long as they are professionals at it

They are foul fiends and the Chinese navy should blow them out of the water.
Why the Chinese navy? Because I don't want to waste the American navy's money.

About modern pirates we hear so much in the news recently:

It's not so hard to get rid of modern pirates, I think.

We can pretty much read a newspaper from a satellite.

Something as big as a ship, supervised from space... voila. You know when it got attacked and you know where are the bandits heading after the raid. Or, if they take the whole ship... you can find it within a second.

It's easy and cheap. And one rusty US destroyer is more then enough to get rid of them once they are tracked down.

US spied Russian sea vessels 24 hours per day in the cold war.

It was nearly 30 years ago, you're saying it's no longer possible?

Well... I have difficulties taking the "we're just coast guards protecting our waters and food" argument serious if the pirates take controle of humngous oil tankers (the incident that started the whole uproar) and now even weapon ships. It's outrageous. Sorry but they're criminals and should be treated as such. If they want to be the brave freeloaders of the sea fighting evil etc. that's fine but don't provide a broken nation with even more weapons and steal international goods.

Hmmm... well it sucks if some larger foreign nation builds many huge catapults into your country without asking you first, and says this is for the defence. Actually who's defence is that at the end? If there was a war that country of thousand catapults would be the main target of the attacker.

This sounded more like that US missile defence -topic but is quite similar to this pirate case.

Actually it's other countries that are providing broken nations with more weapons for profit. Read carefully The ship was Ukrainian. The pirates just hijacked it and, after discovering that there were weapons and tanks on board, said the following:

“Somalia has suffered from many years of destruction because of all these weapons,” he said. “We don’t want that suffering and chaos to continue. We are not going to offload the weapons.”

I have an idea for a video game called "Pirates of the Horn".  Basically you start out with a small boat and an AK-47.  You have to recruit other Somalians and then go to try to hijack ships.  You have to dodge warships, airplanes and other obstacles in order to correctly identify unarmed merchant vessels.  Then you have to plan a coordinated assault and beat back any merchantmen who try to foil your plans.

If you're successful you can upgrade with GPS, cigarette boats, RPG's, radar etc... Also, back in your home base you can score more and higher quality wives, new cars, and eventually even start your own clan!

Or if you want, you can play civilization instead. You have control of all the armies of the world, but every week you have to do a cost-benefit-analysis spreadsheet to see whether you're spending more on patrols and interdiction than what is being lost in ransom given to the pirates.  If all your patrol boats cost more, you lose!

man, someone needs to get on that...

This isn't the movies. Satellites are not always at the right view at the right time and don't instantly move in position. Fine if you do routine surveillance or long-term spying, but not immediately when you hear of a hijacking. (unless you WERE already following said ship, but unlikely)
