Oh yeah, the pirates definitely went on and grabbed those people out of their homes right?
No, but they did grab them out of their ships when they were just going along, minding their own business.

Yeah uhm, I'm sure it would be the same if they were "minding their own business by nuking something" too.

(at least according to the pirates -- but obviously not on nuke proportions)

Yes, but they attack many ships - not just ones with weapons. And besides, the weapons weren't even going to be used on them.

Lets start with the basic, they have to become pirate/theifs/bandits in some way before starting with this snow.
First we need poverty or chaos or sorts so they can't become workers and thus become bandits.
Then they can do what we hear about in the news. Not before, unless we got a railroad of glorius pirates.
Remove the political unstability and poverty and then check the number or bandits and we can agree.

Pirate vessels are a lot harder to spot than vessels of the Soviet Navy.

Nah, pure lies. They can easly be tracked down, since there easly are several satelites over there at all times anyway.

Found another article on the pirates that while not failing to regale their beginnings it also portrays what is happening right now.
Quote:
Instead: a vigilante movement that years ago tried to defend Somali shores morphed into a full-blown pirate scourge — after fishermen on defense stumbled upon an astoundingly lucrative bounty waiting to be had on their doorstep: around 25,000 ships, most unarmed, transiting the Gulf of Aden each year.

Picture ragged Somali fishermen armed with rocket launchers, GPS systems and satellite phones. Picture tiny skiffs cruising the coast of a war-infested nation crawling with gunmen. Picture bandits with sunglasses in worn shirts firing machine-guns at cruise ships, scampering aboard captured trawlers with crude ladders.

And most of all, picture ransoms, huge ransoms.

Meanwhile seems they freed a US captain held by the pirates, some of them were shot. Wonder if any serious measures will be taken in the future.

And besides, obviously this was what my point with the nuke example but you missed it anyway. (since they will likely not be nuke targets right?)

They capture ships indiscriminately, not just ones that have weapons.
