Ah, yes. Hermeneutics (sort of) applied to a kiddies book. Obviously, hilarity ensues.

I apreciate this thread for the entertainment value of the discussion it provokes. I hope it doesn't end here.

It's pretty easy to dump on Harry Potter, Doomforge, I'm curious though, are you able to elaborate why you enjoyed them?

Pan: thanks

FoG: I enjoyed it for the first time, because of Rowling's great way of writing. It's simply.. enjoyable. The suspense is OK. The magic is there (and I don't mean the spells, but the atmosphere). Overall it's an ok world, maybe a bit childish, but still ok.

But the plot is horrible.

And, of course there is more to come! most likely today. But I have to warn you, the next parts will be shorter, because, well, the first one is where the world is established, so it has obviously the most major flaws to pinpoint. Only fourth and seventh are as dumb as first when it comes to plotholes.

Look, you said you enjoyed it.
That's it.
If you enjoyed it, it's a good book, and the writer done a good job writing it.
It's a fact. This book succeed, big time. mybe because of that so many people are trying to abase this book? envy?

When you do this, when you seek all the defects, you just ruin youreselfs and others fun. Thats why I hate critics so much. They ruin others fun for a living. Plus, I don't stand the pettiness.

Mostly because of impressionable teenagers really Doomforge ruins nothing, you are the one who has the problem in the first place if you let a critic ruin your mood. Besides he only posts his personal opinions.

I may not like Doomforge's point of view, but honestly:

enter a flippin' discussion and say what could be done better, instead of just hatin' on someone *hint* *hint*
EDIT: I am not talking to doomforge specifically, though it may seem so. it was more directed at shadow who just plan stated he hated it.

If it's childish, don't judge it as mature stories

After all, cartoons have ridiculous plot as well. It's all in the art factor (but then it's for kids)

Yeah, after all it's a book for children.  Much as I can agree with your points, I still seriously doubt Rowling was writing with 21-year-olds in mind.

True, however, avoiding plotholes should be - imo - every writer's duty. Why? To show respect to fans, for instance. You know, those who enjoy the book, but see that the world is random and illogical, and that kills the atmosphere and the mood.

It works like that for me. How can I empathize with the world if the world is basically one big plothole?

Well a couple of things.  Structural problems aside (completely agree about the mirror and that love spell stuff), she was a one-shot author, she had to get a book published.  That means agreeing to a few demands along the way - I remember hearing that huge parts of it were clipped and trimmed extensively just to shorten it down for children, before the publishers realised kids could come to enjoy 800-page tomes.

It's okay to pick on details and inconsistencies in the story and call it crappy because of this, but there's some saying like this which I can agree with instead: "No matter how wonderful your story idea, how exciting your plot, how quirky your characters - it all comes down to the telling."

I get a bit obsessive about junk in stories too, so a few years ago I went on a searching binge and found a few examples of Rowling managing to "fix" a lot of plotholes in online chat and mails and such.  I know it's a stupid form of patchwork, even cheating (Bram Stoker never used the internet to finish his novels... ) but though this isn't in the books, it's still out there.  I guess the mentality is that such nitty-gritty details should only be of real interest to the obsessive fanboys, not the random casual reader, since it puts them off.  Even the real epilogue wasn't in the books; Rowling left it out of the final novel and chose to write it on her blog.

Didn't know that thing about the epilogue. So the one we see at book 7 isn't the "real" one?

Can you throw in a link, if that's what you meant? Now you got me curious.

It is the real one IIRC, but not the finale.  I haven't cared about this series for years though, so make what you will of it.
